New Library Is a $41.5 Million Masterpiece. But About Those Stairs.
“It’s chaos,” said one of the children’s librarians.

It has been heralded as an architectural triumph: A new $41.5 million public library in Long Island City that ascends over multiple landings and terraces, providing stunning Manhattan views to patrons as they browse books and explore.

But several of the terraces at the Hunters Point Library are inaccessible to people who cannot climb to them. A staircase and bleacher seating in the children’s section, judged too risky for small children, has been closed off. And the five-story, vertically designed building only has one elevator, creating bottlenecks at times.

The accessibility issues, some of which have been angrily called out in social media posts and elsewhere online since the library’s Sept. 24 opening, have left officials with the Queens Public Library hurrying to find solutions and the architects exploring ways to retrofit the building.

It has also raised the question of how the pricey public building, nearly two decades in the works, made it through the lengthy planning process without more consideration for accessibility.

https://www.nytimes.com/2019/11/05/nyregion/long-island-city-library.html?fallback=false&recId=476929519&locked=0&geoContinent=NA&geoRegion=CA&recAlloc=top_conversion&geoCountry=US&blockId=published-assets-bq&imp_id=960814290&action=click&module=trending&pgtype=Article®ion=Footer

Queens Library officials responded that librarians could simply retrieve those books for disabled patrons, a solution in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act, and noted that the first of the four terraces did have elevator access.

But on social media and among advocates for the disabled, that rationale got panned.

“To me, that is the response of somebody who never had the experience of going somewhere and not being able to fully participate,” said Christine Yearwood, founder of the disability rights group, Up-Stand. “Part of what universal design is about is allowing everyone to independently enjoy spaces. Having to ask someone else to help you is, at worst, demeaning, and at best, a limiting experience.”
The disputed shelves are now bare; the library, responding to the criticism, has moved the 2,900 adult fiction books to an accessible area on the second floor, and is now figuring out how to use the vacated space.

Florida deputy arrested for child abuse after slamming teen to the ground by her throat

Florida deputy arrested for child abuse after slamming teen to the ground by her throat
The girl, who was at a school that specialized in children with emotional needs, did nothing to provoke that level of force, the sheriff said Tuesday.

A school resource officer was arrested Tuesday on a child abuse charge related to a September incident in which he slammed a teenage girl to the ground by her throat in Pompano Beach, Florida.

Deputy Willard Miller, 38, was charged with felony child abuse without great bodily harm and is the subject of an internal affairs investigation, Broward County Sheriff Gregory Tony said Tuesday.

"The way the deputy responds, for whatever occurred, whatever type of verbal dialogue was going on, it makes no sense and it wasn't necessary," Tony said.

Video released by the sheriff's department showed the jarring moment when Miller attacked the unidentified 15-year-old girl at the Cross Creek School on Sept. 25. Miller can be seen in the video in a room with the young girl and at least two other individuals.

The girl walks around the room with her hands in her pockets for a few minutes while Miller is on his phone. At one point, the girl appears to tap the deputy's leg with her foot and Miller looks up for a moment.

Miller then crosses the room about a minute later, puts his hands on the teen's throat and slams her to the ground while the girl's hands are still in her pockets. He then turns her over so that she's on her stomach, seems to say something to her, then lets her up and places her in what appears to be an alcove in the room.

Florida officials deny public library's request for a New York Times subscription, calling the paper "fake news"

Officials in Citrus County, Florida, heard the public library system's request for a digital New York Times subscription and denied it, citing President Trump's belief that the nationally acclaimed paper is "fake news."

"Do we really need to subscribe to The New York Times?" one county commissioner asked after a vote on the motion during a public meeting. The other commissioners laughed, video from the meeting shows.

"I actually was going to say that. I'm going to be a 'no' for this. Fake news. I agree with President Trump," another commissioner, identified as Scott Carnahan by the Citrus County Chronicle, said. "I will not vote for this. I do not want The New York Times in this county," he continued, going on to say he does like agree with or like the paper.

All four regional libraries in Citrus County currently offer print versions of The Times, at a cost of about $3,000 a year, according to the Citrus County Chronicle. Library director Eric Head recommended a digital group subscription for the county, which would cost $2,657 annual for the first two years, and $2,714 for a third year. This plan would give all 70,000 Citrus County library card holders digital access to the Times, the Citrus County Chronicle reports.

woman killed by her (maybe abused) Great Danes

NEWSER) – A man was released from jail Friday, only to find his wife had been killed the same day, likely by her own dogs, according to Ohio police. Dale Matthews says he called his son to pick him up from Warren County Jail, where he was held on a warrant for failure to appear for child support, after his wife failed to answer his calls. The pair then drove the 11 miles to her home in Waynesville, where they found 49-year-old Mary Matthews dead on the bathroom floor, according to a police report. Police responded to a call about a possible overdose but determined Matthews had likely been attacked by one or both of her Great Danes. Her body was "covered in puncture wounds and appeared to be missing a piece of flesh from her ankle," NBC News reports, adding walls of the home were coated in blood.

There was also a piece of flesh and a bloody baseball bat on a couch, close to which sat a pair of ripped and bloodied sweatpants, per the Cincinnati Enquirer. There was more blood on towels in the kitchen and on a glass door that led to a deck so covered in feces that the "actual deck could not be seen," per NBC. That was where police found the Great Danes, which were later euthanized, per WKRC. An investigator in the coroner's office tells the Enquirer that the dogs were "known to be aggressive" and had "bitten our victim in the past." As Dale Matthews said his wife usually consumed beer and prescription pills at the start of each day, authorities believe she failed to call for help after wrangling the animals and bled to death, perhaps unaware of the extent of her injuries. Police met the woman's husband and son in the driveway. Police saw bloody footsteps in the garage entryway into the home. Blood was found in multiple rooms, according to the report.

Mathews' was found dead by police in a first-floor bathroom near the front door, according to the report.

Her lower body had "Numerous cuts or puncture marks"

A baseball bat that was "heavily blood-stained" in the front and back was found on a living room couch. Grey sweat pants that were torn or punctured in "numerous places" that were heavily blood-stained were found on the living room floor.

Police documented signs of alcohol and prescription drug abuse.

Police found "two large but thin Great Danes" on a back deck off the kitchen.

"The deck was littered with dog feces to the point that the actual deck floor could not be seen," according to the report
.

The chief dog warden, Nathan Harper and his deputy took the dogs to be held for bite comparisons, according to the police report.

"Conservative estimates say Trump owes more than a billion dollars in unpaid taxes."

Replying to
@ScenarioLENS
Assumptions:

From 2008–2016 Trump’s net worth increased from $2B to $4B.

Billionaires pay 23% + 9% to NY for income tax.

$250M per year x 32% = $80M x 8 years = $640M.

Trump boasts he paid nothing.

IRS penalties can double the amount owed — and worse for offshore accounts.
