Bye, Betsy: Educators Celebrate the End of the DeVos Era
Stakeholders in the education community celebrated Joe Bidens victory because it means the end of the troubled tenure of Betsy DeVos.
AFTER THE 2020 presidential election was called for Joe Biden on Saturday, the country's educators released a collective sigh of relief knowing that, at long last, the days were numbered for the woman they consider Public (School) Enemy No. 1: Education Secretary Betsy DeVos.
The national teachers unions, their city and state affiliates, school superintendents, principals, educators and parents took to social media to throw DeVos an early retirement party, posting photos and videos of themselves popping bottles of champagne with tears in their eyes, retweeting GIFs and memes of doors being slammed shut, of actors performing trite "buh-byes" and of photoshopped pictures of DeVos as Cruella de Vil and other Disney movie villains.
The Chicago Teachers Union lit up Twitter with two words: "Bye Betsy."
Hours later, their palpable release was bolstered by Biden, who in his victory speech gave them the warm hug they had been pining for.
"For America's educators, this is a great day," he said. "You're going to have one of your own in the White House. And Jill is going to make a great first lady."
Jill Biden, a member of the National Education Association, is an English teacher at a community college in Virginia.
"We were so happy," Mandy Manning, the 2018 National Teacher of the Year, says.
Manning has been an educator for 22 years, including the last 11 teaching immigrant and refugee students English and math in Spokane, Washington.
"We are so excited to see a return to support for public schools because, while we have a lot of work to do in order to be able to serve each and every student, public schools are where that's actually going to happen," she says. "I am so hopeful and it's such a good feeling after not having that for so long."
DeVos, who was repeatedly ranked the most unpopular Cabinet secretary in the Trump administration, is also one of the president's longest serving.

When Ring first looked at the check he thought it was a $300 tip, but after he put on his glasses he realized he missed a zero. It was a $3,000 tip on a $7 bill. He ran out to the customer to make sure he hadn't made a mistake.
"He said, "No, that's what I intended. Share it with the staff, good luck to you guys, Merry Christmas and we'll see you when you come back."'
Ring said he's known as a jokester with the staff -- so when shared the news with one of his waitresses, she thought he had pulled a prank.
"She said "Yeah right, you did that"... the next server I showed it too, she started crying, she knew it was legit," he said.
There were four servers working on Sunday, and each of them got $750 from the tip.

As urbanites flock to forests and rivers to escape coronavirus threats, trailheads are cramped with parked cars and fishing on the Madison River is like a Disneyland ride.

Housing prices have soared, especially this year, driven by Covid-19 refugees who sometimes buy a home without seeing it. In one month this summer, the median home price jumped by $88,000 to $584,000 in a city where the average annual wage is about $48,000. Home prices jumped another $35,000 just last month. Even as the Tyvek and two-by-fours of new construction have become ubiquitous, many local residents say they are getting priced out of the market.
The situation has been worsened by the proliferation of short-term rentals to satisfy demand created by out-of-town visitors.
The pandemic has exacerbated it, said Bozemans mayor, Cyndy Andrus. Weve been growing a lot, but it took off this year. They are fleeing big urban areas for the amenities.
For some residents the biggest blow is the whittling away of their psychic income. Many people are willing to make less money in exchange for living in a wild place with uncrowded hiking, fishing and skiing.
That equation has changed dramatically this year, as people flee confinement for the great outdoors and that includes both new transplants from coronavirus hot spots and local residents who are opting to spend more time outdoors during the pandemic.
