Biden's cash fuels DeSantis' budget wishlist

TALLAHASSEE — Ron DeSantis is building a campaign against Joe Biden — and he’s going to make the president pay for it.

The Florida governor on Thursday unveiled a $99.7 billion proposed spending plan that comes as DeSantis gears up for his 2022 reelection and continues to generate buzz as a top-tier potential 2024 White House hopeful. The governor’s budget is packed with federal stimulus funds from the Biden administration that DeSantis wants to use for his most politically popular programs, including a gas tax break and $1,000 bonuses for police and teachers.

The governor made it clear Thursday that he wants to use $3.5 billion from Biden's American Rescue Plan to help fund nearly every high-profile piece of his budget, setting up a scenario where the Biden administration could pay for policies DeSantis will use to campaign on during his reelection bid.

“I think the most ironic piece about his budget is that the governor wants to take $1.2 billion in American Rescue Plan money and use that for the gas tax break,” state Rep. Anna Eskamani (D-Orlando) told reporters after the budget announcement. “As the governor continually attacks President Biden, the reality is we could not balance this budget, or give out tax breaks without President Joe Biden.”

Massie gets notice that he can't block people from responding to his gun filled Christmas tweet

Rep. Thomas Massie (R-Ky.) is being reminded that he cannot block people on Twitter because he's mad they didn't like his gun-filled Christmas photo.

Earlier this week, Massie tweeted a photo of his family standing in front of a Christmas tree. All of the family members were holding large guns. In the tweet, Massie wrote: "Merry Christmas! Ps. Santa, please bring ammo."

The tweet went viral, with many people criticizing the Kentucky lawmaker for posting it. Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-Colo.) also responded to the tweet by posting one of her own, which showed her younger children holding guns around a Christmas tree.

But Massie seems to have blocked some Twitter users who found the tweet objectionable—and now he's being reminded that he can't do that.

Mike Masnick, the editor of TechDirt, pointed out that by blocking Twitter users, Massie was violating the First Amendment. In 2019, the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit ruled that former President Donald Trump blocking critics on Twitter was unconstitutional after the Knight First Amendment Institute at Columbia University brought a lawsuit against the administration.

After that tweet, Masnick joined many other Twitter users who were blocked by Massie.

Trump remains fixated on overturning the 2020 election and it's impossible to get him to focus on anything else, sources told Axios

Trump remains fixated with his election-fraud "big lie," sources told Axios.
He is judging allies' loyalty by how rigidly they support the false claims, the outlet said.
Sources told Axios that aides attempting to interest him in other issues have failed.
Former President Donald Trump remains fixated on overturning his loss in the 2020 election, and sees support for his bogus election fraud claims as a litmus test of loyalty, Axios reported.

Sources who spent time with Trump at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida told Axios that it's impossible to carry on an extended conversation with the former president without him returning to his election-fraud obsession.

"We try to get him onto other topics, but you always get dragged back," an unnamed Trump advisor told the outlet.

He's intensely focused on demands that Republicans "get smart" and pursue efforts to "audit" and overturn that result, a source told Axios. Several such audits of the 2020 results have been launched, but have yet to find anything.

Young Latinos are dying of COVID at an alarming rate -- the effects could be felt for generations

Every morning, Sergio Ayala combed his daughters' hair into twin braids, dropped them off at school and headed to work.

He loved his job as a field supervisor at his brother-in-law's pest control company. But he wanted to own a business and was studying to become a barber. He hoped to start a college savings fund for his three girls and toddler son.

In January, that dream was cut short. His family believes he contracted the coronavirus while practicing his barbering skills in people's homes.

Ayala died from COVID-19 at age 37.

---------

In California, younger Latinos are dying of COVID-19 at much higher rates than their white and Asian counterparts. Younger Black people also are dying at high rates, but the disparity is starkest for Latinos.

----

In California, Latinos ages 20 to 54 have died from COVID-19 at a rate more than eight times higher than white people in the same age group, according to a study by USC's Department of Preventive Medicine.

In Town Hall, GOP Senator Ron Johnson Says 'Standard Gargle Mouthwash' Kills Coronaviru

During a virtual town hall, Republican Wisconsin Senator Ron Johnson said that "standard gargle mouthwash" kills coronaviruses like COVID-19. Scientific research and mouthwash companies do not back up his claim.

"By the way, standard gargle mouthwash, has been proven to kill the coronavirus," Johnson claimed during the Wednesday event. "If you get it, you may reduce viral replication. Why not try all these things?"

"It just boggles my mind that the NIH (National Institutes of Health) tell people, 'Do nothing. Maybe take Tylenol,'" he added.

— The billionaire daughter of the Publix Super Markets founder has died after having early-onset Alzheimer's Disease, the company announced Wednesday. Carol Jenkins Barnett was 65.

But this isn’t even remotely the first time the Jenkins kids have gotten involved in politics. Last January, Creative Loafing Tampa Bay discovered through FEC filings that the founder's other daughter, Carol Barnett Jenkins, donated a total of $110,000 to the Georgia Republican election efforts in 2020.

According to the Miami New Times, multiple Publix offspring have maxed out federal donations to Trump's 2020 campaign, including Carol and Julie, as well as his grandchildren Gregory Fancelli and Leslie Fancelli Sonatori.
