girls tape thank U note to door for sheriff's wife,He yanks Chaperone by hair, holds gun to her head

youth group took a holiday sign to a sheriff’s home. He’s accused of holding a gun to the chaperone’s head.

Members of a church youth group giggled as they taped a Thanksgiving decoration to Bingham County Sheriff Craig Rowland’s door in Blackfoot, Idaho, and ran back to their friends in a nearby vehicle. The paper turkey with “thank you!” written in black letters was supposed to be a surprise for the sheriff’s wife.

But as the group’s adult chaperone, Chelsea Cox, began to drive away on Nov. 9, Rowland — wearing long johns and holding a gun — appeared in the middle of the street, the girls later told investigators. At first, they said, they thought he was joking. Then, after the car rolled to a stop, Rowland allegedly approached the vehicle and pointed the gun at two girls in the front seat before turning the weapon toward Cox, according to a 10-page affidavit.

On Tuesday, Rowland was charged with aggravated battery and aggravated assault — both felonies — and exhibition or use of a deadly weapon, a misdemeanor.

“Get the f--- out of the car,” the sheriff told Cox, according to the affidavit, before grabbing the woman by her hair and yanking her out of the vehicle.

A 12-year-old girl told investigators she then saw the sheriff hold the gun to Cox’s head — close enough to be touching — and say “I will f---ing shoot you,” according to the affidavit. Cox, investigators wrote, is Rowland’s neighbor.

In an interview with investigators, Rowland did not deny pulling Cox out of the car by her hair and pointing a gun at her head, though he said he did not have his finger on the trigger, according to the affidavit. Rowland added that he’d drank one alcoholic beverage Nov. 9 but “was clear as a freaking bell” during the 8 p.m. incident.

The switch from daylight saving time, which moved the clock back one hour a couple of nights before, had “really messed me up,” he told investigators.

The youth group members, seven girls between the ages of 12 and 16, had been delivering what they called “thankful turkeys” to several homes that night, Cox told investigators. At each house, they taped a turkey to the door, rang the doorbell and ran away before the recipient knew who had done it. The group had made a turkey for Rowland’s wife and delivered all but two before reaching the sheriff’s home.

Florida sheriff praises homeowner for shooting home invader: 'Only Santa Claus gets to come in your house'

A Florida sheriff praised a homeowner for standing his ground and shooting an attempted home invader on Wednesday.

"The homeowner did exactly what he should have," Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd told WFLA-TV after a man in Lakeland, Florida shot an intruder in his home.

"He had a gun, he knew how to use it, it was loaded, and he shot him a lot," Judd said. "He gave him an early Christmas present. Only Santa Claus gets to come in your house — and Santa Claus is invited."

According to police, the homeowner says an intruder tossed a flower pot through the glass French doors of the home in an attempt to gain entry from the back porch. The homeowner then shot the intruder three times.

racist cop gets his job because because Black victim wasn't "Seething" with "dislike or hatred"

An internal investigation found that Vorce operated outside of his jurisdiction, failed to de-escalate the situation and used excessive force, had an “inappropriate tone and demeanor” and violated the department’s social media policy by sending the email.

Now, arbitrator Thomas Barnes has made the unfortunately binding decision to reinstate Vorce with no back pay and his seniority restored. Vorce will be required to undergo sensitivity training.

Barnes cited that the officer had no prior complaints and that his actions hadn’t “otherwise undermined or significantly impaired the otherwise good reputation of the department.” Barnes also pretty much said that since Vorce was so sorry during his arbitration, a situation like this wouldn’t be likely to happen again.

“It’s not likely to occur again given [Vorce’s] recognition of what he did wrong,” Barnes wrote, according to the State Journal. “[Vorce] testified he was not a racist and was upset by any inference that he was. ... [He] acknowledged he had multiple opportunities to simply drive away and let the on duty officers take care of the delivery driver.”

From the State Journal:

Another factor in Barnes’ decision was the delivery driver’s testimony. He spoke “in a manner in which he did not exhibit any disdain for the Police Department nor any anger or dislike for [Vorce],” Barnes wrote. “It appears incredibly unusual to have a young black individual minding his own business while delivering newspapers being pursued by [Vorce] who twice pulled his gun on [him] and not have any seething dislike or hatred for what happened. He may have, and not in a small way, saved [Vorce’s] skin with his unemotional testimony.”

Utah State Univ police chief of police resigns 2 days after his remarks about rape are revealed

USU Chief Quits After Remarks to Football Players Surface
Earl Morris told Aggies players Mormon women might falsely accuse them of rape

The chief of police at Utah State University resigned Thursday—two days after a speech he made to football players about sexual assault was described in a federal lawsuit against the school. In a recording of the speech made to Aggies players this fall, Chief Earl Morris can be heard saying that Mormon women might have consensual sex with them and then, "feeling regret," claim it was was nonconsensual. "If you’re not used to a Mormon community, folks, I’m here to tell you, the Latter-day Saints community ... young ladies, they may have sex with you, but then they’re going to go talk to their minister, their bishop, priest, whatever you want to call it," he said. Players can be heard laughing in response to the chief's remarks, the Salt Lake Tribune reports.

Morris also told players that police have no choice but to investigate reports of sexual assault, and "the cards are stacked against you from the moment that happens." The university said Wednesday that Morris had been placed on administrative leave "pending confirmation of reprehensible and unacceptable comments made to USU student-athletes," reports the Utah Statesman. It said the chief's remarks "are not consistent with the university’s values or the trainings provided on sexual misconduct at Utah State."

The police chief at Utah State University has resigned in the face of intense scrutiny for comments he made about sexual assault to the football team that became public this week.

Chief Earl Morris’ decision came Thursday morning, the school confirmed. He had been placed on administrative leave the day before, while USU said it was investigating the “reprehensible and unacceptable” comments.

“The leader of the university’s police department must have the trust of the campus community,” USU had said in a news release posted online Wednesday night.

super rich televangelist Kenneth Copeland avoids prop tax by calling his mega mansion a "parsonage"

In 1999, the televangelist Kenneth Copeland built a 18,000 square-foot mansion in Texas.
Texas law means that by calling it a "parsonage" Copeland avoids an annual $150,000 property tax.

Copeland is worth $750 million and is the head of the Eagle Mountain International Church.

America's wealthiest pastor avoided paying more than $150,000 in annual taxes on his $7 million Texas mansion, according to the Houston Chronicle.

Kenneth Copeland, a famous televangelist who founded Eagle Mountain International Church, built a six-bedroom mansion near Fort Worth in 1999.

Copeland is worth $750 million and owns multiple properties and several private jets, the Chronicle said. The jets are housed at a nearby airport named after him.

Under Texas law, pastor's homes, known as parsonages, get a 100% exemption from property tax.

Local authorities said Copeland is within his rights to claim the house as a parsonage, even though the law was likely never intend to cover super-rich religious figures like him.

---------

In a 2015 sermon, Copeland said God told him to build the 18,000-square-feet house for his wife Gloria, the Chronicle said. "It is part of your prosperity," God told him, he said.

Ousted McDonald's CEO forced to pay back $105 million after more affairs revealed

ormer McDonald’s CEO Steve Easterbrook agreed to pay the company $105 million over a messy termination lawsuit, the company announced Thursday.

Easterbrook was fired in November 2019 by the McDonald’s board of directors after an investigation revealed the leader of the company was having an affair with an employee.

But Easterbrook was given a golden parachute on his way out the door, a severance package that eventually totaled $105 million.

The package was only available because Easterbrook convinced the board that the “non-physical” relationship that got him fired was his only violation of company policy.

Apparently, the company’s eight-day initial investigation missed some things, because in July 2020 a tipster alerted McDonald’s to more Easterbrook misconduct. McDonald’s launched a more thorough investigation and discovered the CEO was actually having three physical sexual affairs with employees.

McDonald’s then sued Easterbrook over the severance package and for lying about the extent of his misconduct. The settlement announced Thursday was the result of that suit.

What's a loving mom to do when son is too small to play USC football and doesn't have the grades? $$

But they had a problem: Their son didn't seem to have the grades or test scores to earn admission to a top university.

Like his father, Lou Palatella, a renowned offensive lineman and linebacker for the San Francisco 49ers in the 1950s, the son played football. But he had quit his high school team after realizing he was too small to play it at the major collegiate level.

So what is a loving parent to do?

What Marci Palatella did, according to a 204-page federal indictment returned Tuesday, was to pay $575,000 to buy her son’s way into the private and extremely selective University of Southern California.

he chief executive of a Northern California liquor distribution company was sentenced Thursday in Boston federal court to six weeks in prison for paying a fixer to get her son admitted to USC as a football recruit, authorities said.

Marci Palatella, a 66-year-old Hillsborough resident, was also ordered to pay a $250,000 fine; spend two years on supervised release, with the first six months under house arrest; and complete 500 hours of community service, according to U.S. District Judge Nathaniel M. Gorton's ruling.

Palatella pleaded guilty Aug. 26 to one count of conspiracy to commit honest services mail fraud, court records show.

Palatella paid William "Rick" Singer, a self-billed admissions consultant who orchestrated the scheme, $75,000 to bribe West Hollywood school administrator Igor Dvorskiy into allowing corrupt test proctor Mark Riddell to secretly correct her son’s SAT exam answers, according to the U.S. attorney's office for the District of Massachusetts.

She also agreed to pay $500,000 to get her son admitted to USC as a football recruit even though he wasn't being recruited and would never play on USC's football team, prosecutors said.

A school has apologized after pictures of its "grim" Christmas lunch went viral.

Parents on Twitter and a local Facebook group described the bleak meal as "disgusting."

After initially defending the choices, the school apologized and offered refunds.

Parents said they were left "upset" and "disgusted" by a Christmas meal served at Steyning Grammar School and Sixth Form College in West Sussex, United Kingdom on Tuesday. In a local Facebook group, parents described the meal — which consisted of a bread roll, slice of turkey, pig in a blanket, mince pie, and a ball of stuffing — as "disgusting" and looking like something "left over" from an "anatomy class." Many parents in the Facebook group said they had complained that the school's Christmas dinner was "unacceptable" in letters sent to the head master.

Ciaran Walsh, who appeared to be a parent of children who attend the school, shared a photo of the meal on Twitter.

Texas AG Ken Paxton's Attempt to Indict Black Female Sheriff Backfires in Appeals Court

https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/crime/texas-ag-ken-paxton-s-attempt-to-indict-black-female-sheriff-backfires-in-appeals-court/ar-AART0oh

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton (R) was handed a scolding by the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals on Wednesday, when the court ruled that Paxton had exceeded his legal authority to prosecute a fellow member of Lone Star State government.

In 2016, Zena Stephens, a Democrat and Texas’ first Black female sheriff, defeated a Republican challenger and was re-elected, in a county that narrowly voted in favor of Donald Trump over Hillary Clinton in the same election. By early 2018, though, Stephens was indicted for accepting excessive campaign donations, courtesy of Paxton’s office. Stephens joined Vanessa Crawford (of Petersburg, Virginia) at the time as the only two Black women sheriffs in America.

Shortly after Stephens’ historic election, the FBI investigated and found that she received cash contributions in excess of $100, in violation of federal campaign-finance law. The FBI next referred its findings to the Texas Rangers, which presented the case to the Jefferson County District Attorney. That prosecutor’s office declined to prosecute Stephens, but referred the Texas Rangers to AG Paxton.

Paxton, who is himself under indictment, pursued the case against Stephens independently, presenting the case to a grand jury which in turn returned a three-count indictment. The first count was a violation of the Texas Penal Code for tampering with a government record (Stephens was accused of reporting a $5,000 individual cash contribution in the political contributions of $50 or less section of an official report). The second and third counts charged violations of the Texas Election Code for unlawfully accepting two contributions over the $100 limit.

------------

Texas’ highest court, however, reversed and sided 8-1 with Stephens, ruling that Paxton has no authority to unilaterally prosecute individuals.
