Italian bishop apologizes after telling children Santa doesn't exist

The bishop of Noto in Sicily stunned schoolchildren last week when he dropped a bombshell during an arts festival -- telling them Father Christmas wasn't real.

"No, Santa Claus does not exist. In fact, I would add that the red of the suit he wears was chosen by Coca Cola exclusively for advertising purposes," Antonio Staglianò told the children, according to Sicilian media.

Italian media reported that the comments came during an event held on the feast day of Saint Nicholas, the initial inspiration for the figure of Santa Claus and widely known for his generosity.

However, after the bishop's comments went viral, the Diocese of Noto posted an apology on its Facebook page, written by Staglianò's press secretary Father Alessandro Paolini.

"First of all, on behalf of the Bishop, I express regret for this statement that has disappointed the children, and want to clarify that this was not at all Mr. Staglianò's intention," the statement said.

"you people always coming in with fake check" and &%$ lying Sgt justin Pletcher

video has surfaced from a U.S. Bank in Minnesota, showing the branch wrongfully detaining Joe Morrow, a Black man, who entered the local bank to cash his paycheck after working a 12-hour shift as an "order picker" at a grocery store.

A bank manager had Morrow placed in handcuffs despite already having an account with the bank and showing his I.D. upon entry, KSTP reported.

Despite having an account with the bank and showing his ID, that simple transaction led to a call to police, threats of arrest, and Morrow being placed in handcuffs.

A bank manager told officers he suspected the check was a fake, but police body camera video shows he only called Morrow's employer for verification after the 23-year-old Black man was removed from his office.

The check was, in fact, real.

TFG and O'Reilly Set For Lucrative History Tour, Despite Shows Not Selling Out

Despite limited publicity and tickets not selling as fast as expected, Donald Trump's upcoming tour with Bill O'Reilly's could already be considered a success as a money making scheme alone.

The former president and the ex-Fox news host will kick off their four-date "History Tour" on Saturday at the FLA Live Arena in Sunrise, Florida before moving onto the Amway Center in Orlando, Florida, on Sunday.

The tour will then visit the Texas at the Toyota Center in Houston and the American Airlines Center in Dallas on December 18 and 19 respectively.

Just days before the tour was due to kick off, Newsweek found tickets for all four events were still widely available, with both venues in Florida having more than 1,000 tickets being sold online.

credit repair business cleaned up client's credit with fake police reports of identity theft

The operator of a North Carolina credit repair business has been sentenced to more than eight years in prison for creating fake police reports to clean up his clients’ bad credit and enlisting his family to help run a $3.4 million credit card fraud scheme at Lowe’s

-----------
------------------------

False police reports
The probe into Griffin began in 2019 when authorities charged him with filing false police reports with credit rating agencies stating that his clients — some of whom had paid $3,000 for his credit repair services — had been the victims of identity theft. The ruse often worked and Griffin’s clients were unaware of what he had done, according to court documents.

After he had been charged, the case expanded after investigators determined that Griffin had engaged in something called synthetic identity theft, where a stolen Social Security number is paired often with a fake name, thereby creating a false identity.

Prosecutors say Griffin at some point used such a false ID to obtain an auto loan to purchase a 2018 Hyundai Genesis for $73,000.

The scam then expanded into credit card fraud. Griffin was accused of enlisting his family members to help apply for dozens of Lowe’s credit cards issued by Synchrony Bank, using synthetic identities, prosecutors said.

Investigators say Griffin would then max out the accounts to purchase prepaid cash cards and then walk away from the credit card. Prosecutors say Griffin also scammed other financial institutions through a similar ruse.

Man trying to steal catalytic converter killed by falling car, deputies say

James Maye, of the sheriff’s office, told WSOC that the homeowner found the man when he pulled into his driveway.

“He’s got multiple vehicles in his driveway and sees basically the lower half of a person sticking out from the front bumper of his Toyota Prius,” Maye said. “It appears the vehicle fell down on top of (the man) while he was trying to cut the catalytic converter off.”

Authorities said the car appeared to have fallen from an automotive jack and onto the man, whose name was not released, as he was cutting the exhaust pipe. In a news release Friday, officials said they hoped the incident served to “highlight the dangers associated with the theft of motor vehicle parts and will serve to discourage anyone actively involved in this type of criminal activity.”

“A catalytic converter and the small amount of scrap value it holds is not worth the risk of losing your life,” deputies said.

"A ninja took your bag" says toddler after smash and grab

Family was in car with toddlers during San Francisco smash-and-grab at Lombard Street

Visitors from Chicago said the window was broken in their minivan and a bag stolen while they were in the vehicle on Monday, Dec. 6, 2021.

Kimberly Balde of Chicago was sitting in a minivan, with her young nieces and an adult cousin, near San Francisco's Lombard Street on Monday afternoon when she heard a loud and startling smash.

Kimberly looked behind her, across the back seat, to check on the children, ages 2 and 4, who were sitting in the third row. She saw that the window was broken, as well as a male suspect, who was wearing a ski mask and black gloves. The suspect was in the midst of grabbing a bag containing a laptop, a passport, the children's birth certificates, headphones and more, she said. The strap of the bag was wrapped around the headrest where one of the girls was sitting.

The older child exclaimed, "A ninja took your bag," Kimberly said.

Board will do leadership assessment

https://www.sfgate.com/tech/article/Better-com-execs-resign-after-layoffs-16688744.php

LATEST Dec. 10, 2 p.m.

After a tumultuous week for Better.com — which included a leaked Zoom layoff, mass executive departures, the resurfacing of wild allegations and internal leaks aplenty — CEO Vishal Garg will be "taking time off effective immediately," according to an internal email obtained by Vice, TechCrunch and multiple other outlets.

The email, from Better.com's board of directors, was sent to employees as the company grapples with "the very regrettable events over the last week." The board announced that CFO Kevin Ryan will fill in for the time being, and that an "independent" firm will be conducting a "leadership and cultural assessment" in light of this week's events.

"The recommendations of this assessment will be taken into account to build a long-term sustainable and positive culture at Better," read the letter. "We have much work to do and we hope that everyone can refocus on our customers and support each other to continue to build a great company and a company we can be proud of."

Spokespeople for Better.com did not immediately respond to a request for comment from SFGATE. (Two executives responsible for managing PR for the company left earlier this week.)

Dec. 9, 11:30 a.m. The cracks at Better.com are rapidly starting to widen after CEO Vishal Garg’s viral “brutal” layoffs continues to make waves.

Deaisha Thompson (@deaishamariee) filmed and posted the video, and it has since received over 54,000 views and 3,300 likes.

The caption of the clip reads: "Pizza Hut worker calls the police on me to have me removed for not wanting to pay him another $34 when I already paid."

The text overlay reads, "Pizza Hut worker calls the police on me because I won't pay him another $34 and wouldn't give me my food. The other worker ended up giving me my food."

The Pizza Hut worker is on the phone, allegedly with the police. "I have a customer here that claims that she paid online," he says to the person on the other line.

She chimes in to say: "With a customer service representative. Gave him my card number."

He swiftly walks away from the counter.

"Like, how is this my fault?" Thompson says. "How am I refusing to pay? I already paid. He was rude when I came up in here."

A commenter said, "Y'all don't understand this type of technology is above him. That man was born in 1902 fr." Another commenter wrote, "They relied on police to keep people of color in line back in the day, and they still do it today."
