Ex-Cop Who Dislocated Shoulder of Woman with Dementia Will Be Offered Plea Deal, Says the Victim’s Outraged Family

Austin Hopp twisting Karen Hopp’s arm during the arrest.

The former Colorado police officer who dislocated an elderly woman’s arm during a violent arrest will be offered a plea deal in an upcoming hearing, says the woman’s family. Karen Garner lives with dementia, and as seen on video, then-officer Austin Hopp of the Loveland Police Department took her to the ground and pushed her against his vehicle in a matter of mere minutes during the incident on June 26, 2020. She had allegedly forgotten to pay Walmart $13.88.

“When you hear the word plea ‘bargain,’ plea ‘deal,’ that means to cheapen something and we feel that this whole case is being cheapened by not allowing it to just go to court,” daughter-in-law Shannon Steward told KDVR.

Hopp is scheduled for a hearing to take place Wednesday.

Assistant District Attorney Matt Maillaro told the family the D.A.’s office is considering a plea deal, Steward told The Reporter Herald. The family talked it over and chose to oppose the plea deal. Maillaro said the office would go through with the offer anyway, she said. A D.A.’s office spokesman declined to provide comment to the outlet on Saturday.

Arizona Republican Wendy Rogers unleashed a flood of insane talking points about Russia's Invasion

Arizona Republican lawmaker Wendy Rogers unleashed a flood of insane talking points about Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, not the least of which was her deranged claim that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is a “globalist puppet for [George] Soros and the Clintons.”

Rogers, an Arizona state senator and admirer of Confederate generals, is an extremely vocal figure on social media for her hatred of “communists” and her belief in former President Donald Trump’s election lies. She most recently showered praise on Holocaust denier Nick Fuentes at the same white nationalist conference where Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) spoke.

On Sunday, Rogers decided to comment on the war in Ukraine by blaming Zelensky for Russia overrunning his country. She also complained about Russia getting cut off from social media and the global financial system.

Videos on social media appear to show Russian soldiers looting banks and grocery stores in Ukraine.

One video that circulated widely on Twitter purported to show armed Russian soldiers taking items from a Ukrainian supermarket.

It was not immediately clear where the incident took place, and Newsweek is still trying to verify the details.

"Russia doesn't allow protests" heard online today / 8 states enacted anti-protest laws in 2021

Eight states have passed laws cracking down on protest activity since Black Lives Matter protests erupted across the United States last summer, according to the International Center for Not-For-Profit Law, which tracks such legislation. Similar bills are pending in 21 states, according to the Washington, D.C.-based center.

New laws enacted in Arkansas, Florida, Iowa, Oklahoma and Tennessee this year increase penalties for blocking traffic, tearing down monuments and other unlawful behavior during a protest or riot. The bills typically define “riot” as a gathering of three or more people that threatens public safety.

New Arkansas, Kansas and Montana laws increase penalties for protesting near oil and gas pipelines and other infrastructure. And an Alabama law will allow cities in Lauderdale County, where protestors called for the removal of a Confederate statue, to control where protests occur and to charge protest organizers permit fees.

Republican bill sponsors and police groups say increasing penalties for crimes committed during a protest will help prevent violence and protect law enforcement officers. But civil rights groups and Democrats say the heightened penalties will chill First Amendment rights to free speech and peaceful assembly, and could be used to disproportionately arrest people of color.

SUV stolen with toddler inside

The California Highway Patrol issued an Amber Alert early Sunday morning for a missing 2-year-old in Sunnyvale.

According to Sunnyvale police, Jacob Jardine was inside an SUV parked on the 500 block of North Mathilda Avenue at 3:51 a.m., while his mother unloaded groceries from the vehicle. When she returned to the SUV, she discovered it had been stolen by an unknown suspect with Jacob still inside.

Jacob has red, curly hair and brown eyes. He was wearing a white hooded sweatshirt and white and gray pants when he went missing. The SUV is a brown 2008 Buick Enclave with temporary paper license plates, number unknown, issued in Georgia. The left headlight and taillight are out, and the right front tire is a spare. There is also a blue “baby on board” sticker on the vehicle.

Sunnyvale police are also looking for Luong “Tammy” Huynh, 29, who they think may have information about the abduction.

“At this time we are attempting to contact 29 year old Luong ‘Tammy’ Huynh,” the department wrote on Twitter. “We believe Tammy may have information that will help us locate Jacob Jardine. If you know Tammy or have recently seen or spoken with her, please contact us immediately at 408-730-7100.”

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene Tries to Defend Her Appearance at White Nationalist Conference

CBS News repeatedly pressed Greene this morning about her appearance at the racist rally, hosted by the notorious white nationalist political commentator Nick Fuentes, and she used the old ostrich “head-in-the-sand” defense, claiming that she had no idea that Fuentes or the conference espoused such sickening values.

“I do not know Nick Fuentes, I’ve never heard him speak, I’ve never seen a video, I don’t know what his views are, so I’m not aligned with anything that may be controversial,” she said. “What I can tell you is I went to his event last night to address his very large following, because that is a young—it’s a very young following, and it’s a generation I’m extremely concerned about.”

The CBS reporter pressed her again, bluntly: “It’s a white nationalist group.”

“Excuse me, excuse me a minute,” Greene responded. “I’ll tell you exactly why I went. I went to talk to them about ‘America First’ policies, and I talked to them about our country going forward. Now in regards to Russia, Putin is a murderer and he should have never invaded Ukraine.”

CBS continued to press Greene several times about the fact that she spoke at a white nationalist conference, and she continued to deflect and speak a bunch of word salad.

1,600 Vintage Baseball Cards Found Hidden During Idaho Home Renovation

1,600 Vintage Baseball Cards Found Hidden During Idaho Home Renovation

Unfortunately, an appraiser says the cards are of little value. "I'm not sure I have the heart to rip them down," the homeowner says.
When Melissa Brodt purchased a fixer upper house in Boise, Idaho, for $324,000, she knew she had a lot of work to do.

Renovations started immediately, and no room needed more work than a bedroom with an ugly green wall.

“I went in, got brave, said I’m gonna deal with whatever was underneath these,” Brodt said.

The first step was peeling off the faux tile wallpaper. The more she peeled, the more she revealed. Hidden behind the wall, she discovered a giant collection of baseball cards.

There were a whopping 1,600 cards in total.

Brodt found out that the collection belonged to Chris Nelson, who grew up in the house and had plastered the cards to his bedroom wall 30 years ago.

The strange Republican world where the big lie lives on and Trump is fighting to save democracy

----

But DeSantis and fellow travellers at this week’s Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) in Orlando, Florida, see themselves not as dismantlers of democracy but its saviours. In their worldview, the true danger comes not from former president Donald Trump’s “big lie” of a stolen election but a radical left minority imposing socialism, cancel culture and “woke” ideology on the majority.

Welcome to a parallel universe where it is common cause that Trump was spied on by rival Hillary Clinton, the January 6 insurrection was a heroic stand by patriots, and names such as Anthony Fauci, Justin Trudeau and Black Lives Matter are guaranteed to elicit loud boos.

It is a universe where Wayne LaPierre of the National Rifle Association, an organisation accused of illegally diverting tens of millions of dollars for lavish personal trips, and which tried and failed to file for bankruptcy, can still be feted when he boasts of a record 5.4 million first-time gun buyers last year.

And it is universe where Trump still reigns supreme, his face emblazoned on toy money and Superman images, his name stitched into souvenir badges, hats, hammocks and T-shirts that proclaim “Trump 2024”. Bids for a 5x5in painting by Michael Shellis depicting the former president kissing the Stars and Stripes opened at $3,000.

components of the parallel universe

1. voter fraud is real/ Trump really won
2. alternet view of Jan 6th events
3. Protecting America from "wokeness"

Trump taking White House papers back to Mar-a-Lago, is it a serious issue? Dems 88%, Repubs 27%

onald Trump has dismissed the furor as no big deal, but most Americans take a dim view of the former president carting away boxes of White House documents, some of them classified, when he moved back to his Florida home at Mar-a-Lago.

In a new USA TODAY/Suffolk University Poll, 56% agreed with a statement that the episode was "a serious issue of governance that warrants further investigation." Thirty-one percent said instead it was "an issue fueled mostly by partisanship that doesn't warrant further investigation."

---------

While there's a predictable partisan divide on the question, more than one in four Republicans, 27%, called it a serious issue. So did 88% of Democrats.

That's one of a series of takeaways from the survey of 1,000 registered voters, taken by landline and cell phone Feb. 15-20. It has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.1 percentage points.
