Trump promised to shrink the trade deficit. Instead, it exploded.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/business/economy/trump-promised-to-shrink-the-trade-deficit-instead-it-exploded/2019/03/05/35d3b1e0-3f8f-11e9-a0d3-1210e58a94cf_story.html?utm_term=.002bf516b368

The Commerce Department said Wednesday that — despite more than two years of President Trump’s “America First” policies — the United States last year posted a $891.2 billion merchandise trade deficit, the largest in the nation’s 243-year history.

The trade gap with China also hit a record $419 billion, underscoring the stakes for the president’s bid to reach a deal with Chinese President Xi Jinping as soon as this month.

The department’s final 2018 trade report, which was delayed by the partial government shutdown, showed that the United States bought far more in foreign goods than it sold to customers in Africa, Asia, Europe and North America. The shortfall topped the 2006 record of $838.3 billion, set as the housing bubble was peaking, and marked the third consecutive year of rising deficits.

A broader measure of the nation’s trade performance, which includes the services sector, showed a $621 billion deficit. That reflected a deterioration of more than $100 billion from the figure Trump inherited from president Barack Obama.

Walking dogs is sending older people to the ER, study says

An injury from this simple activity can result in life-altering circumstances -- and such accidents are increasing, according to a study published in the medical journal JAMA Surgery.

The study looked at patients who made visits to hospital emergency departments throughout the United States from 2004 to 2017, using data from the National Electronic Injury Surveillance System from the US Consumer Product Safety Commission. From 2004 to 2017, researchers estimated there were more than 32,000 emergency room cases of fractures associated with walking leashed dogs among people 65 and older. Cases increased from an estimated 1,671 ER visits in 2004 to 4,396 in 2017.

There are many reasons why older populations may already be more prone to fractures, such as reduced bone mass as patients age, and increased fall frequency. Older women who owned dogs in need of walking were especially at risk of associated injury. Being female is already a risk factor for fractures and bone disease, such as osteoporosis. Since 78.6% of fractures in the study occurred in women, "older women considering dog ownership must be made aware of this risk," the University Pennsylvania researchers wrote.

The study authors noted there could be limitations to the study. Although the results were statistically significant, the study only looked at patients who went to an emergency department. They also state that their study excluded injuries that were less severe and not fractures.

"For older adults -- especially those living alone and with decreased bone mineral density -- the risks associated with walking leashed dogs merit consideration," the authors wrote. "Even one such injury could result in a potentially lethal hip fracture, lifelong complications, or loss of independence."

The researchers suggest clinicians work with patients who use dog walking as exercise to reduce the risk of injury. That could including training dogs not to lunge when leashed and suggesting smaller breeds of dogs.

Woman raped and burned kills attacker by dragging him into the flames

A woman who was raped and then set on fire turned the tables on the monster who attacked her — dragging him into the flames and killing him, police in India said.

The 35-year-old woman, a widow, told police that the man, 42, attacked her inside her home north of Kolkata in eastern India on Monday while her three daughters were out of the house, the AFP reported.

“Then he poured kerosene on her body and set her on fire,” police officer Sajal Kanti Biswas told the news outlet.

Miraculously, the woman survived the attack, suffering burns to her face and hands, while the man succumbed to his injuries at an area hospital.

The woman remains under treatment at the Malda Medical College and Hospital, the Times of India reported.

"a billionaire who gave up an unbelievable life to go get punched on the chin every single day"

this was a billionaire who gave up an unbelievable life to go get punched on the chin every single day,” Eric Trump added. “To get abused, and quite frankly, as a family we’ve done that as well.”

Man killed by lions he kept for breeding. Town doesn't seem sad

He Kept 2 Lions in His Yard. The Inevitable Just Happened
Czech Michal Prasek mauled to death on family farm

(NEWSER) – When Michal Prasek was attacked by a lion in 2012, he admitted it was his own fault. "Every morning I went to feed it, but this time I put on a coat that smelled of dogs," the amateur lion breeder said, per the UK Week. He added that the intervention of a lioness was all that saved him. There was no such reprieve in a horrifying deja vu on Tuesday. The Czech man—who kept a 9-year-old lion and 3-year-old lioness in homemade enclosures on his family's farm in Zdechov—was found mauled to death in the wooden pen of the lion. Prasek's father, who discovered the body around 7am, said the cage had been locked from the inside, per the BBC and Newsweek.

Responding officers shot both lions, with a rep noting the killings were "absolutely necessary for them to get to the man." Prasek, 34, had previously been fined for illegal breeding as neighbors raised concerns about the lions. A cyclist even collided with the leashed lioness as Prasek walked the animal last year. But Prasek refused to let authorities onto his family's property, and as there was no evidence of animal cruelty and apparently no suitable facility for the big cats in the Czech Republic, the issue had been at a stalemate, per the BBC. The latest incident "will perhaps finally help to resolve this long-term problem," Zdechov's mayor is quoted as saying.

Prasek bought the male lion in 2016 and the lioness in 2018. He kept both predators in self-made cages in his backyard in Zdechov, close to the border with Slovakia. In the past, he has been handed fines because he did not secure planning permission before building the enclosures.

In response, Prasek reportedly refused to allow anyone representing the local authorities onto his property, leaving the two sides at an impasse. The BBC explained that authorities were unable to forcibly remove the animals because keeping them was not illegal, there is a lack of alternative facilities in the Czech Republic and there was no evidence of cruelty towards the animals.

Zdechov Mayor Tomas Kocourek told local media that Prasek would often walk his lions around the local area on a leash, prompting regular complaints from other local residents.

Prasek was in the news in June 2018 when a cyclist crashed into his lioness while Prasek was taking her for a walk. The cyclist was eventually able to fight the animal off using his bike, but still required hospital treatment. The incident was eventually classed as a traffic accident after local police were called to investigate.

“Today's incident will perhaps finally help to resolve this long-term problem,” Kocourek said.

skilled, educated foreign workers are leaving the US dejected, Trump doomed their American dream

https://www.businessinsider.com/h1b-visa-foreign-worker-says-trump-immigration-crackdown-doomed-american-dream-2019-3

Trump said he wanted more 'highly skilled' immigrants to come to the US. But skilled, educated foreign workers are leaving the US dejected, saying Trump doomed their American dreams — leaving businesses in the lurch

Even as a little boy growing up in China's Jiangxi province, Leo Wang knew he wanted the American dream.

He loved the idea that working hard and following the rules could guarantee success, and he remembers watching from afar as a booming tech sector drew some of the world's top talent to Silicon Valley.

Wang even owned a hard drive from Seagate — a company he and his parents admired, and one that would eventually pour months of effort into hiring him.

But he admits now that he was naive about some aspects of America before he arrived as a graduate student in 2015.

Wang, now 32, knew of President Donald Trump, whom he used to watch on "The Apprentice." But he never imagined that the tough-talking presidential candidate who railed endlessly against illegal immigration would one day become an insurmountable hurdle to his own efforts to immigrate to the US.

"I didn't think his policies were going to affect H-1B visas — people who work hard and are educated and who follow all the rules," Wang told INSIDER. "I didn't think that was going to affect us. That part that I didn't know that much about. In some ways it maybe disappointed me about America."

Wang was one of 85,000 skilled foreign workers selected annually by lottery as part of the highly competitive H-1B visa program, which grants three-year visas to workers who have already secured jobs and sponsorship from employers in the US.

He is also part of a growing number of H-1B petitioners whose application was ultimately rejected amid the increasingly cumbersome series of bureaucratic hurdles the Trump administration has implemented — which experts and industry leaders decry as a crackdown on talented workers that companies are keen to recruit.

Google gives raises after finding it was underpaying men

https://nypost.com/2019/03/04/google-gives-raises-after-finding-out-it-was-underpaying-men/

Google has given pay raises to thousands of staffers after finding that it was underpaying some men when compared to women.

The search engine company said in a blog post Monday that an internal audit uncovered several new pay discrepancies, including some male engineers earning less than their female counterparts, despite doing the same job.

Male employees with the job title Level 4 Software Engineer received “less discretionary funds than women,” the blog post said. The average employee in that position pulls in around $160,000, according to the job review company Glassdoor.

Google said it will be distributing $9.7 million in pay adjustments to 10,677 employees for that and other pay disparities. It did not break down how many of the raises were going to men versus women.

“Our pay equity analysis ensures that compensation is fair for employees in the same job, at the same level, location and performance,” Google said in the blog post. “We’ll keep working to improve our practices and to ensure that Google is a great place to work for everyone.”

TRUMP complains his generals don't incorporate business into briefings, not interested in terrorism

DONALD TRUMP IS LESS INTERESTED IN TERRORISM THREATS AT INTELLIGENCE BRIEFINGS, COMPLAINS HIS 'GENERALS DON'T UNDERSTAND BUSINESS': REPORT

https://www.newsweek.com/trump-less-interested-terrorism-intelligence-briefings-complains-his-generals-1350202

resident Donald Trump is showing “less interest” in potential terrorist plots during intelligence briefings and complains that his “generals don’t understand business” because they so rarely consider economics in their analyses, according to a Sunday report by New York Times.

Trump has reportedly raised concerns that his generals and officers don’t incorporate enough business considerations into their intelligence briefings. “My generals don’t understand business,” the president reportedly complained following a national security briefing, a former White House official told the Times.

In order to maintain Trump’s interest, intelligence officials have reworked some of their presentations to focus on economics and trade, the president’s favorite topics.

“President Trump’s economic focus has been evident, including his emphasis on increasing NATO allies’ burden sharing and pressing allies and partners to do more in support of our common interests,” Garrett Marquis, a spokesman for the National Security Council, said.

Although intelligence officers haven’t criticized Trump for his narrow focus, some have questioned whether it could impede the president’s ability to act on threats, like terrorism or political events with global implications. White House officials also told the Times that Trump has shown interest in the cost of American military bases overseas and allies’ defense expenditure, but "less" on potential terrorist schemes or cloak-and-dagger spy work.
