The Pandemic Ignited a Housing Boom--but It's Different From the Last One
The Pandemic Ignited a Housing Boombut Its Different From the Last One
Residential home sales are hitting peaks last seen in 2006, just before the bubble burst, but this time mortgages are stricter, down payments are higher, and a tight supply is supporting prices
-----------------------
The current housing boom is far more stable than the last one and poses fewer systemic risks, economists say. A downside: There are more barriers to entry, and its more difficult for buyers who arent already homeowners to make that first purchase.
Most real-estate analysts agree that the pandemic helped ignite the current boom as some urbanites looked to leave crowded cities like New York and San Francisco for cheaper cities or for more space in the suburbs while working from home. When lockdowns began lifting last year, home sales took off: June sales surged nearly 21% over the prior month, the biggest monthly increase on record going back to 1968. That milestone lasted only a month, when July sales rose almost 25% from June.
Covid has catalyzed a rethinking of where we live, and why we live there, and where we work, and how we work, said Rich Barton, chief executive of online real-estate company Zillow Group Inc.
Market watchers also say that a number of longer-term trends are at play that should keep the housing market hot, or at least steady, even after Covid-19-related demand fades.

Man arrested after taking daughter into San Diego zoo elephant habitat for pictures
SAN DIEGO (AP) - A father has been arrested on suspicion of child endangerment after he carried his 2-year-old daughter into the elephant habitat at the San Diego Zoo to take a photograph with the animals.
Zoo officials said the man bypassed multiple barriers and purposely and illegally trespassed into a habitat for Asian and African elephants Friday afternoon.
Witnesses said the elephant came within seconds of making contact with the two. The elephant was not harmed, and the man was able to get his daughter out of the habitat safely.
The father, 25-year-old Jose Manuel Navarrete, is being held in jail on $100,000 bail. It wasnt immediately known if he had a lawyer who would speak on his behalf.

Nevada town sues for rights to water leaking from canal, Fed wants to stop leaks
FERNLEY, Nev. (AP) A Nevada town founded a century ago by pioneers lured to the West by the promise of free land and cheap water in the desert is trying to block the U.S. government from renovating a 115-year-old earthen irrigation canal with a plan that would eliminate leaking water that local residents long have used to fill their own domestic wells.
A federal judge denied the town of Fernleys bid last year to delay plans to line parts of the Truckee Canal with concrete to make it safer after it burst and flooded nearly 600 homes in 2008.
Now, lawyers for the town a half-hour east of Reno have filed a new lawsuit accusing the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation of illegally failing to consider the expected harm to its municipal water supply and hundreds of private well users who tap into the groundwater based on what they say are binding water allotments, some dating to World War II.
Safety aside, the bureau says the loss of federally owned water from the dirt canal is a waste of U.S. taxpayers money. The city says the government shares responsibility for their dependence on the unintended subsidy provided by the seepage, partly because its never before objected.
Fernley has a right to continued recharge from the Truckee Canal under the public use doctrine because the seepage conditions have continued for 115 years, the lawsuit stated.
Over time, local users have become utterly reliant on seepage from the canal to keep the aquifer recharged and in a healthy condition, the suit said. It says Fernley spent $40 million on a state-of-the-art water treatment facility based on that reliance.

FERNLEY, Nev. (AP) - A rural Nevada town founded a century ago by pioneers lured to the West by the promise of free land and cheap water is suing the U.S. government over the way it plans to renovate a 115-year-old earthen irrigation canal.
The canal in Fernley burst in 2008 and flooded 600 homes.
The Bureau of Reclamation wants to line part of it with concrete because its leaking and wasting taxpayers money. But the city of Fernley says its been using that extra water to fill domestic wells for decades. It says it established water rights long ago and the government has never objected before.
A one-woman watchdog torments the far right in deep-red Northern California
https://www.sfgate.com/news/article/A-one-woman-watchdog-torments-the-far-right-in-16037733.phpREDDING, Calif. Only halfway into the endless plague year, the most outspoken journalist in one of Californias most conservative counties had already tangled with the sheriff, the local megachurch, a rodeo operator and other characters she later pegged as the anti-maskers, religious zealots, science-deniers, strict Constitutionalists, conspiracy theorists, anti-vaxxers, militia members and State of Jefferson believers.
Shasta Countys Doni Chamberlain took each to task in the frank and folksy column she publishes on her website, A News Cafe.
Then, in July, Chamberlain posted the column that unleashed a special fury.
Titled Dear Governor Newsom: Weve Got Trouble, Right Here in River City, it invited Gavin Newsom to visit Shasta County to observe the many individuals and businesses thumbing their noses at his orders to close businesses, wear masks and maintain social distance during the COVID-19 pandemic.
NO THANK YOU!!!!!! Dont need no stinking communist liberals dictating to northern CA, came one response. Just look at the rest of CA, a den of criminals, druggies and homeless. Another slapped her with a sexist slur on Facebook. Yet another social media nemesis struck a more menacing chord: I think its time we remove her from our way of living.
Love her or loathe her, few here are agnostic about the sometime gardener, cooking columnist and grandmother who has become the leading antagonist against what she sees as creeping extremism in the region locals know as the North State.
Some Florida GOP websites still show Trump as being the current president: 'The election was stolen'
https://www.rawstory.com/donald-trump-concede/A string of Republican Party websites based in Florida still show Donald Trump as being the current president of the United States, the TCPalm reports.
At least 10 websites are not acknowledging the Joe Biden's presidency. Some party official say that it's just an oversight, despite the fact that some of the sites were updated to feature newly elected down-ballot officials. But others like Jay Kramer, chair of the Indian River County Republican Party, openly admit that showing Trump as the current president is intentional.
"Trump hasn't conceded, and it's our opinion the election was stolen," said Kramer, who is the former mayor of Vero Beach. "It's important to make a statement and to make sure the statement stays relevant for the next 3½ years."

75 year old asian woman who fought back against attacker - gofundme $723,000
Hi everyone, I am fundraising for my grandmother that was racially attacked today on 3-17-21 market street. I am amazed by her bravery. She was the one that defended herself from this unprovoked attack. But she is now suffering two serious black eyes and one that is bleeding unstoppably. Her wrist has also swelled up. She has been severely affected mentally, physically, and emotionally. She also stated that she is afraid to step out of her home from now on. This traumatic event has left her with PTSD. Although she has health insurance that covers the basics, there are still many medical expenses that cannot be covered on her own. She is a cancer survivor and she also has had diabetes for over 10 years now. The funds that we receive will be used to cover her medical expenses, her therapy treatment, and her bills that we will have to pay constantly from now on. We want to thank everyone that is donating and that has shown my family massive support through this very traumatic event. My heart is with all the other elderly asians that has also been seriously injured or killed in this wave of attacks towards the asian community.
