As JROTC member offers respect to POW-MIAs, a baseball fan does his part, too

As fans at the Atlanta Braves game stopped to recognize the POW-MIA Chair of Honor, a powerful image emerged on Memorial Day.

A JROTC member stood at attention next to the chair as a fan dressed in a red raincoat held an umbrella over him to shield him from the rain.
The image quickly spread on social media after the Atlanta Braves posted it on Twitter with a one-word caption, "Respect."
Another fan captured the moment and shared their view.
"They sacrifice so much for us, we can sacrifice for them too!!! #RespectOurMilitary

I'm a black doctor. My neighbors called the cops on me for listening to Biggie.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/my-white-neighbors-called-the-cops-on-me-for-listening-to-hip-hop/2018/05/28/54930d04-4fbe-11e8-af46-b1d6dc0d9bfe_story.html?utm_term=.90575aa93773

Knock knock.

Who could that be? I wondered. It was such an aggressive knock — definitely not friendly — that I froze. I finally stood up and walked to the door. I opened it with purpose, ready to confront the person on the other side.

He said: “Your neighbors called the police for a disturbance.”

It was 3 p.m. on a Saturday last fall.

-----------------

Then came the knocks.

On my doorstep was a man with a gun; it was a police officer. He spoke abruptly and was frightening.

“Is someone else in here?” he said. His hand was near his hip, close to the gun in its holster.

“No, I’m alone,” I blurted, startled.

“I need to see your identification.”

“Why? I live here.” I felt bullied in my own apartment.

“I have to report this incident, and I need your identification.”

Feeling helpless, I reluctantly turned and walked to get the license out of my wallet. I handed it to him. “So what happens now?” I asked, deflated.

Kushners, Brookfield Near Deal (with Qatar company) on Troubled 666 Fifth Ave., Sources Say

https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2018-05-17/kushners-brookfield-said-near-deal-on-troubled-666-fifth-avenue

Kushner Cos. is nearing a deal with a unit of Brookfield Asset Management Inc. to salvage its investment in an over-leveraged office tower, according to two people familiar with the talks.

The Qatar Investment Authority, which invests on behalf of Qatar’s government, is the largest outside investor in the unit, Brookfield Property Partners LP, according to data compiled by Bloomberg and company filings.

Kushner Cos. had earlier talked with a member of Qatar’s royal family about investing in the building, 666 Fifth Avenue, Bloomberg has previously reported. The family company has been trying for years to find a partner to save its investment in the 41-story building it bought for $1.8 billion in 2006, near the top of the real-estate boom. Recently Kushner Cos. has lost millions a year on the building due to low occupancy and high mortgage interest payments.

The deal would buy out the Kushners’ current partner, Vornado Realty Trust, which owns 49.5 percent of the building’s offices. Vornado would continue to own the building’s lucrative retail spaces. It isn’t immediately clear what would happen to a $1.2 billion mortgage that is due February 2019, or if Kushner Cos.’ ownership stake would shrink as a result of new funds.

Ivanka Trump granted 7 new trademarks in China - CONFLICT OF INTEREST

http://money.cnn.com/2018/05/28/news/ivanka-trump-china-trademarks/index.html

Ivanka Trump has scored a batch of new trademarks in China as her father continues trade talks with Beijing.
Seven trademarks were officially registered to Ivanka Trump this month with China's State Administration for Industry and Commerce, according to the government's trademark database. They are for items such as kitchenware, furniture, paper products and cosmetics.

The approvals come as President Donald Trump remains engaged in trade negotiations with China on a wide range of issues.

Ethics experts say this raises conflict-of-interest concerns, since Ivanka Trump and her husband, Jared Kushner, both serve as senior advisers in the White House.

"They come at a time when her father and his administration, in which she and her husband work, are making enormously consequential decisions with and about China," said Norm Eisen, the former ethics chief for President Barack Obama and a CNN contributor.

"The conflict comes because we do not know if the Trump administration is making these official decisions [on China] to benefit the US, or to get more trademarks and other benefits for the Trump family," he added.

3 other Memorial Day tweets from Trump, straight from watching fox news

He tweeted these three before his staff obviously convinced him to post a few more appropriate tweets (written by them, no doubt).

“We now find out that the Obama Administration put the opposing campaigns presidential candidate, or his campaign, under investigation. That raises legitimate questions. I just find this really odd...this goes to the heart of our electoral system.” Jonathan Turley on @FoxNews

failing upwards... Sam Brownback "has 'big' plans as religious freedom envoy"

https://www.politico.com/story/2018/05/28/sam-brownback-religious-freedom-609161

----

Brownback chuckled and dismissed the notion that he took his new diplomatic role to help rehabilitate his reputation after his much-criticized stint as governor, which ended Jan. 31. He blamed the fall in commodity prices — including oil — for much of his state’s financial problems. He had less than two years left in his second term as governor anyway and said he felt like a lame duck.

----

But now, with the confirmation fight behind him and far from the red-state politics of Kansas, Brownback appears relaxed and eager to tackle a new challenge. He dismisses concerns that he’ll prioritize one religious group over another.

“Religious freedom is my top priority. Every religion. Or no religion at all,” he says. “You’ve gotta be dogged about that. This is about protecting the right. It’s not about favoritism.”

He also downplayed his record on gay rights, echoing Pompeo in insisting that the State Department is “committed to defending the human rights and dignity of all persons.”

Trump puts the "ME" in Memorial day

https://www.cnn.com/2018/05/28/politics/donald-trump-memorial-day-tweet/index.html

----

Remember that phrase "There's a time and place for everything"? Trump seems not to have that gene in him -- or to listen to people who do. Anyone -- and I mean ANYONE -- who Trump ran that tweet by before sending it would tell him that it sounds incredibly self-serving, far too focused on himself and what he's done as opposed to what today means for the country.

But as the past 16 months has shown, Trump rarely consults with people before he tweets. He feels as though he innately understands Twitter -- that it is the medium best suited for him to communicate to the millions and millions of people who not only voted for him but also "get" him at some core level.

Maybe that group of core Trump supporters think today's tweet is a good idea, though it's difficult to see how.

The tweet seems reflective of a broader belief that has animated every moment of Trump's campaign and presidency: This is about him. Period.

Trump visits Arlington after critics slam 'appalling' Memorial Day tweet

https://nypost.com/2018/05/28/trump-visits-arlington-after-critics-slam-appalling-memorial-day-tweet/

President Trump on Monday laid a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier — hours after boasting that service members killed in action would be “happy” with the way he was running the country.

“Happy Memorial Day! Those who died for our great country would be very happy and proud at how well our country is doing today. Best economy in decades, lowest unemployment numbers for Blacks and Hispanics EVER (& women in 18years), rebuilding our Military and so much more. Nice!” he tweeted at 8:58 a.m.

Some veterans groups were outraged over Trump’s self-serving tweet on a day set aside to honor and mourn America’s war dead.
“This is the most inappropriate #MemorialDay comment that a @POTUS has ever made. Self-promotion on a day to remember the fallen, and wishing those remembering their deceased loved ones a ‘happy’ holiday is appalling. #CadetBoneSpurs,” tweeted the veterans group Vote Vets.

ust like pretty much everyone in France—and many around the world—President Emmanuel Macron was highly impressed by 22-year-old Mamoudou Gassama. Video that quickly went viral over the weekend showed how Gassama, a Malian migrant, went into action and scaled four floors of an apartment building in Paris’ northern 18th district Saturday evening in mere seconds to rescue a four-year-old child who was dangling from a balcony.

Two police officers from Wildwood, New Jersey have been reassigned to desk duty as the city’s police department launched an investigation after a video posted online shows an officer repeatedly punching a woman on a beach. The video of the Saturday afternoon encounter that quickly went viral shows two police officers wrestling a woman on the ground. At one point, one of the officers punched 20-year-old Emily Weinman twice on the head and wrapped his arm around her neck.

The video shows how people around Weinman call on her to “stop resisting.” Later, while on the ground, she says, “You’re not allowed to hit me like that!” Alexis Hewitt, who posted the video on Twitter, said she “was sleeping on the beach” when she suddenly woke up to all the commotion. “I can’t believe it,” she wrote.
