The Central Park Five Case: Where the racist cops and prosecutors are now

The Central Park Five Case: Where the racist cops and prosecutors are now
The Central Park Five case has been mostly seen through the eyes of the wrongly convicted, but it took the operatives of the criminal justice system to incarcerate them. They still maintain their stance, despite being proven wrong.

WHAT HE DID: In his tenure as Manhattan D.A., from 1975 to 2009, Robert Morgenthau had seen some of the nation’s most high-profile cases ranging from the murder of John Lennon to “subway vigilante” Bernard Goetz to the Tupac Shakur sexual abuse case. His office was known for their successfully wins, but the Central Park Five case is one his team got very wrong and he knew it.

“I had complete confidence in Linda Fairstein,” he told the New York Times in 2016. “Turned out to be misplaced. But we rectified it.” He acknowledges the mistakes, but like the others says that the confessions of the teens were what drove the prosecutions. “Did I feel badly?” he said. “Yeah, I felt badly. We had screwed up. But there were confessions.”

“This court was handpicked by Dist. Atty. Robert M. Morgenthau. They (the teens) were tried by a lynch mob in a lynch court by a specially selected judge.” —C. Vernon Mason, attorney for Antron McCray

That wasn’t good enough for others who felt the case was a miscarriage of justice. Ron Kuby, who served as Yusuf Salaam’s attorney during his initial appeal, was critical of Morganthau and says he could have done more to foster fairness rather than seeking to fill up prisons.

“Robert Morgenthau’s tenure almost precisely tracked the era of mass incarceration,” Kuby told the Times. “He was the dean and he could have used his moral authority to change that trajectory, and he was silent. He was an active contributor to mass incarceration.”

C. Vernon Mason, Antron McCray’s lawyer agreed after he was convicted. “This court was handpicked by Dist. Atty. Robert M. Morgenthau. They (the teens) were tried by a lynch mob in a lynch court by a specially selected judge.”

WHERE IS HE NOW?: At age 99, in his retirement, Morganthau remains active as a philanthropist and with the Immigrant Justice Corps, in which he advises on immigrant deportation cases, according to The New York Post.

Central Park Five prosecutor resigns from organizations amid backlash after Netflix series
Linda Fairstein's role in the notorious case is under new scrutiny in the wake of director Ava DuVernay's Netflix miniseries, "When They See Us.”

Former Manhattan prosecutor Linda Fairstein resigned from Vassar College's board of trustees Tuesday amid a new wave of backlash over her role in the infamous Central Park Five case.

Fairstein's role in the wrongful conviction and imprisonment of five teenagers of color in 1990, after a white woman was attacked in Central Park, has come under new scrutiny after director Ava DuVernay released a Netflix miniseries about the case, "When They See Us."

The so-called Central Park Five — Antron McCray, Kevin Richardson, Raymond Santana, Korey Wise and Yusef Salaam — were vindicated 13 years after the crime when a serial rapist confessed to the attack.

Fairstein — played by Felicity Huffman in "When They See Us" — ran the district attorney's sex crimes unit at the time of the case. The Netflix series prompted the #CancelLindaFairstein hashtag on social media and calls for her prior cases to be re-examined.

Vassar College President Elizabeth Bradley announced that Fairstein resigned from the board because she "believed that her continuing as a Board member would be harmful to Vassar" due to the backlash.

"The events of the last few days have underscored how the history of racial and ethnic tensions in this country continue to deeply influence us today, and in ways that change over time," Bradley said.

Students at Vassar began an online petition to remove Fairstein from the board and gained more than 13,000 signatures in two days, sparking the school to call an executive committee review to discuss the concerns.

The Trump administration is canceling English classes, recreational programs and legal aid for unaccompanied minors staying in federal migrant shelters nationwide, saying the immigration influx at the southern border has created critical budget pressures.

The Office of Refugee Resettlement has begun discontinuing the funding stream for activities — including soccer — that have been deemed “not directly necessary for the protection of life and safety, including education services, legal services, and recreation,” said U.S. Health and Human Services spokesman Mark Weber.

Federal officials have warned Congress that they are facing “a dramatic spike” in unaccompanied minors at the southern border and have asked Congress for $2.9 billion in emergency funding to expand shelters and care. The program could run out of money in late June, and the agency is legally obligated to direct funding to essential services, Weber said.

Rise in huskies at local shelters blamed on impulsive 'Game of Thrones' fans

https://m.sfgate.com/news/article/Huskies-are-coming-Rise-in-huskies-at-local-13923490.php

Santa Cruz and Monterey County animal shelters believe the increase in huskies is impulsive purchasing from people buying dogs that look like dire wolves from Game of Thrones. Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter says they’ve seen a record number of huskies.

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. — Monterey and Santa Cruz County animal shelters said they're seeing an increase in huskies recently and they believe it's because of the popular TV show "Game of Thrones."

"A lot of huskies and husky mixes have been coming in," Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter General Manager Melanie Sobel said.

She said they have six husky or husky mixed dogs and that's the most they've ever seen at one time.

There has been an increase in huskies seen in shelters around the state and country. Many are speculating it's because huskies look like dire wolves from the popular show "Game of Thrones." The show has noticed the uptick and is speaking out against the impulsive purchases of the dogs.

In April, Jerome Flynn, who plays Bronn in the series, did a video with PETA where he said in part, "Animal Shelters around are reporting a surge in the number of abandoned huskies because the casual acquirer, who bought the dogs on a whim, fail to take into consideration the time, patience, and money required to care for the animal."

Trump suggested he wants British health system included in trade talks

Instead, Trump may have inadvertently played into some of Britons’ worst fears about their post-Brexit future when he suggested that Britain’s National Health Service (NHS) could be a part of a U.S.-Britain trade deal.

“When you’re dealing on trade, everything is on the table — so NHS or anything else, and a lot more than that,” the president said when asked about the position of Britain’s health system in a trade deal. “Everything will be on the table, absolutely.”

Trump’s vague answer to the question may suggest he hadn’t given the idea much thought. However, British news outlets have been keeping an eye on the issue in recent weeks.

----

Now there are fears that a trade deal with the United States could open up the NHS to profit-driven U.S. business interests — and, with it, the creeping possibility of privatization.

“I think the entire economy, in a trade deal, all things that are traded would be on the table,” Woody Johnson, U.S. ambassador to Britain, said during an interview with the BBC on Sunday.

Would that mean health care? “I would think so,” Johnson responded.

--------

Founded in 1948, it is the largest single-payer health system in the world and primarily funded by the British government.

The behemoth system is simultaneously one of the most lauded and derided parts of British life. Polls have shown that the NHS is more cherished than the monarchy or the British army but also that many Britons are dissatisfied with the service and worried about its future.

The anti-Brexit group Led by Donkeys tweeted an image of a ball cap with the name of the US Navy ship named after late Republican Sen. John McCain on the side of Madame Tussauds in London.

“Hey @realDonaldTrump, we read the story about the sailors on a US warship being ordered to hide from you because you’re triggered by the name on their hats. So we turned Madame Tussaud’s into a giant USS John McCain baseball cap,” the group said. “Welcome to London!”

In another, it said “you’re wildly unpopular here in Britain,” linking to an image on the Tower of London showing a 72% UK approval rating for Obama and a 21% rating for Trump.

“SAD! People REALLY don’t like you (though they love @BarackObama). Hope you like seeing your FAILING approval numbers projected onto the Tower of London,” the tweet said.
