cheerleading team took photo w/ & without Downs syndrome teammate. guess which was used officially?

Two Team Photos, One Difference: The Cheerleader With Down Syndrome
A junior high cheerleading team took nearly identical photos with and without Morgyn Arnold. The school called the publication of the photo without her a mistake that is under investigation.

Morgyn Arnold is a natural cheerleader. She grew up supporting her six older siblings at sporting events in Utah and followed in her father’s and sister’s footsteps by becoming a cheerleader herself.

For Morgyn, who has Down syndrome, being on the Shoreline Junior High School cheer squad gave her a chance to make friends and feel included after transferring to the school last summer.

But when the school yearbook came out a few weeks ago, Morgyn, 14, was not in the team’s photo or listed as part of the squad. The school has since apologized for what it called an “error,” but Morgyn’s sister Jordyn Poll said she believed that the exclusion was intentional.

Maddie said she did not remember whether the photographer or the team’s adviser asked Morgyn to sit out of some of the team’s photos, and does not recall receiving an explanation for the action. She thought it was a weird request at the time, she said.

Montana town city council approves motion to prohibit painting on pavement

HAMILTON, Mont. — On Tuesday night, the Hamilton City Council approved a motion that carried 4-2 prohibiting painting on pavement and ordering existing paint to be removed.

Mayor Dominic Farrenkopf says the council last week considered a request for a pride flag colored crosswalk to celebrate diversity.

The request came after council members approved a different painted crosswalk project by Bike Walk Bitterroot in May.

Farrenkopf says once the city received a second request for a painted crosswalk, they decided they should make a policy.

City staff put together an application so people could apply to paint on pavement.

Before that item was brought up on Tuesday evening, a counselor made a motion to not allow any painting on pavement in the city of Hamilton and remove all current painting that exists.

A Tennessee police officer has resigned after being arrested in a road rage incident in which he pointed a gun at a motorist while he was off-duty, police said.

Decherd Officer Matthew Ward has been charged with aggravated assault after he reportedly pointed his department-issued handgun at a driver and ordered him to get on the ground in Rutherford County.

The altercation between the two men was caught on video by onlookers who can be heard calling 911 for help in the background. Ward is heard telling Kovalchuk that he is on duty "24/7."

"He's put his gun in his holster but he's not even from this county. He's pulling his gun on this guy over road rage. He said he was tailgating the guy," the woman filming the video is heard telling the dispatcher.

Dana Rohrabacher, former O.C. congressman, says he was part of Jan. 6 Capitol march

Former Orange County Rep. Dana Rohrabacher, who lost his congressional seat after 30 years in 2018, has acknowledged that he participated in the march to the Capitol on Jan. 6 but insists he did not storm the building along with other Trump supporters.

Rohrabacher, who now resides in Maine, confirmed to the Portland Press Herald on Monday that he took part in the march after images appeared on social media over the weekend that showed him standing among the crowd.

“I marched to protest, and I thought the election was fraudulent and it should be investigated, and I wanted to express that and be supportive of that demand,” Rohrabacher, 73, said in an interview with the newspaper. “But I was not there to make a scene and do things that were unacceptable for anyone to do.”

Florida governor signs new bill requiring K-12 public schools to hold moment of silence each day

All K-12 public schools in Florida will hold a moment of silence at the start of the day starting next school year, according to a bill signed into law Monday by Gov. Ron DeSantis.

According to the law, which was HB 529 in the Florida legislature, principals of each public school shall require teachers in first-period classrooms in all grades to set aside at least one minute but not more than two minutes daily for the moment of silence. Teachers may not make suggestions as to the nature of any reflection that a student may engage in during the moment of silence, the law states. A period of "silent prayer or meditation" was optional for school districts in the state prior to the new law.

"It's important to be able to provide each student the ability every day to reflect and be able to pray as they see fit," the Republican governor said before signing the bill at the Shul of Bal Harbour in Surfside, Florida. "The idea that you can just push God out of every institution and be successful, I'm sorry our founding fathers did not believe that."

SFO flight 'rerouted' after passengers brawl over 'elbow placement' on armrests

Two passengers on a flight departing from San Francisco International Airport were escorted off the plane after an alleged disagreement over armrests devolved into fighting.

The incident took place on a United Airlines flight Friday at around 1:30 p.m., and was initially shared on Twitter by Google product director Jack Krawczyk, who said this incident took place on his “first flight in 15 months.” It is unclear where the flight was headed.

“Of course we were rerouted back to the gate because two passengers got into a physical altercation over elbow placement upon arm rests,” he said in a tweet. (Krawczyk did not respond to a request for comment from SFGATE.)

A San Francisco police spokesman told SFGATE that both men — who were not identified by police — were detained when an officer arrived on the scene.

He Was Lying on Couch When Police Burst In, Shot Him Dead

Johnny Lorenzo Bolton was lying with his eyes closed on a couch in his apartment near Atlanta when police serving a narcotics search warrant burst through the front door with guns drawn and no warning. Bolton stood up and at least one of the officers fired, sending two bullets into Bolton's chest. The 49-year-old Black man died from his injuries.

Details of the pre-dawn encounter in December—most of which come from a lawyer representing Bolton’s family—resemble a case that is well known nationwide: the killing nine months earlier of Breonna Taylor in Kentucky.

Bolton’s relatives and their lawyers wanted to try to get information about the shooting from law enforcement before drawing attention to his killing, they said. Frustrated in those efforts, the attorneys sent a draft of a lawsuit to Cobb County officials in mid-April along with a letter threatening litigation if county officials didn’t provide more information and address accountability and compensation for Bolton's death.

“For almost six months, we gave them quiet,” Bolton's sister Daphne Bolton said in a recent interview with the AP. “That lets me know that’s not what gets a response.” Now, Bolton says, “I want my brother’s name to ring beside Breonna Taylor’s. When they say Breonna Taylor, I want them to say Breonna Taylor and Johnny Lorenzo Bolton. I want them to be simultaneous.” She also wants an end to "no-knock" warrants.
