Iowa Gov. Reynolds signs law limiting teachings related to racism and sexism

A new law signed by Governor Kim Reynolds on Tuesday will ban teaching of divisive concepts in public schools.

Within the states classrooms, educators will no longer be allowed to have conversations surrounding:

The state or nation being systemically racist or sexist.
An individual is inherently racist, sexist or oppressive.
Feeling discomfort or guilt because of someone's race or sex.

While the law does not specifically mention the Critical Race Theory, Governor Reynolds mentioned in a statement about the law.

"Critical Race Theory is about labels and stereotypes, not education. It teaches kids that we should judge others based on race, gender, or sexual identity, rather than the content of someone's character," said Gov. Reynolds.

Those opposed to the law said it is vague and confusing. ACLU of Iowa said it is creating an issue that does not exist.

"This new law is clearly designed to limit frank and honest conversations of U.S. history and present day reality. And how could that possibly be good to for our state?" said executive director, Mark Stringer.

son of powerful legal family murdered, was awaiting trial for drunk boating death of teen

https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/crime/paul-murdaugh-mother-found-shot-to-death-outside-their-colleton-co-home-sources-say/ar-AAKPOhU

Jun. 8—Paul Murdaugh, a Hampton man who was charged in the 2019 boat crash that killed a young woman, and his mother were found dead of gunshot wounds Monday night outside their family's home in Colleton County, law enforcement officials said Tuesday.

The bodies were found by Alex Murdaugh, husband of Maggie Murdaugh and father of Paul, according to legal sources who did not want to be identified because they are not authorized to disclose the information. Alex Murdaugh told authorities he had been out at the time of shooting and found them when he arrived home, the sources said.

One victim apparently had been shot with a shotgun; the other was killed with what appears to have been an assault rifle, the sources said.

Margaret, 52, and Paul Murdaugh, 22, were found dead, shot multiple times, in the backyard of their sprawling estate in Islandton, South Carolina, Monday

They were found by husband and father Richard Alex; their deaths have been ruled a double murder
Police have released no motive, no suspects and no information five days on

They have insisted there is no danger to the public
Sources said Paul was the likely target and his mother was collateral damage

Paul was shot in the head and upper body with a shotgun, while Margaret was shot with an assault rifle, they said, with their bodies found several yards apart

Paul had been awaiting trial on charges relating to the 2019 boating death of 19-year-old Mallory Beach, who was thrown from the boat Paul was driving
The Murdaugh family has ruled the county's legal system for decades

Caitlyn Jenner, once an 'American hero,' struggles to win support from California voters

https://www.bakersfield.com/ap/news/caitlyn-jenner-once-an-american-hero-struggles-to-win-support-from-california-voters/article_4185fc38-65d2-5fcb-8dd4-5f3af2d626fb.html

Caitlyn Jenner's initial ascent into American social strata was astronomical.

-------

Shortly after crossing the finish line in the 1,500-meter final race, a spectator ran onto the track and handed Jenner a small U.S. flag on a stick. Americans watched as Jenner took a victory lap, waving the stars and stripes to a stadium of cheering crowds.

-------------

But after more than a month on the campaign trail, Jenner finds herself with few fans in the stands.

As a Republican transgender candidate, Jenner is caught between two worlds: conservatives who aren't entirely comfortable with transgender people, and transgender-supporting liberals who take issue with Jenner's conservative leanings.

The hesitancy on both sides has cast Jenner to the bottom of the polls, with a recent survey finding that 6% of voters are willing to support her.

Even though she's garnered the lion's share of national media attention related to the recall, it's unclear whether Jenner will be able to carve out a base of support.

"The fact that... there's virtually zero attraction, is it because she's transgender or is it because she really hasn't presented a single compelling qualification?" said longtime California Republican consultant Rob Stutzman.

Republicans rage after Democrats move up Gavin Newsom recall timeline

https://www.sfgate.com/politics/article/Gavin-Newsom-recall-timeline-when-Republicans-date-16241523.php

For weeks, prominent California Democrats have talked openly about accelerating the timeline for the Gov. Gavin Newsom recall election, hoping to schedule the contest before the governor could face more political trouble in the fall.

"He has rebounded well with vaccines and budget," state Sen. Steve Glazer tweeted on May 21. "His biggest threats are the unknowns: virus variant, fires, school reopening. No reason to delay and give opposition any more running room."

-----------------------

While most had previously anticipated a recall election sometime in late October or early November — near the peak of wildfire season — the acceleration means recall election day could be scheduled for as early as late August or early September.

California Republicans were not happy.

how fast could you spend a million? Lottery winner was broke within 2 years. now dead

A sad ending out of Michigan to a story that should've had a happier one. MLive.com reports that a body was found last Saturday floating in the Tittabawassee River, near Northwood University in Midland. Police have now IDed the body as 69-year-old Leroy Fick, an Auburn resident who won a $2 million jackpot 11 years ago on the Michigan Lottery's Make Me Rich! TV game show.

Authorities haven't disclosed the cause of death, but they say it doesn't appear Fick's death is suspicious. After his June 2010 win, Fick took home about $1 million after taxes, but what happened next now serves as a "cautionary tale" to other lottery winners, notes Play Michigan. ClickOnDetroit.com notes that Fick, who ended up on TLC's Lottery Changed My Life program, dumped about $200,000 into the construction of a new home, as well as $200,000 into annuities.

More money was spent on investments, as well as such items as a new Chevy Camaro, swords, slot machines, and a "significant amount of fireworks," per MLive.com. Just two years after he'd won, Fick was broke.

It emerged that he and another lottery winner had been collecting government assistance despite their wins, prompting state lawmakers to change the criteria on who can apply for food aid. Fick also struggled with legal troubles, with a 45-day jail stint in 2012 for a drug conviction, followed by another prison sentence later that year for convictions of larceny of a firearm and felon in possession of a firearm. "The whole thing just blew up in my face," Fick told the judge in the latter case at the time. "I thought people would love me if I helped them out some. I had the wrong idea, I guess. They all turned on me and that was it." The Midland Police Department is asking anyone with information on Fick's death to call 989-839-4719.

Florida Publix shooter posted: 'I want to kill people,' sheriff angry that family said nothing

'He was on Facebook saying he wanted to kill women and children': Cop says man who shot dead grandmother and her one-year-old grandson could have been stopped if police were told of his postings, but 'You think a damn soul told us? NO'

A furious sheriff condemned the friends and family of a gunman who murdered a grandmother and her one year-old grandson for not reporting his bloodcurdling Facebook threats to kill.

Palm Beach County Sheriff Ric Bradshaw could not contain the anger in his voice as he hit out at friends and relatives of Timothy J. Wall, 55, a day after he killed a 69 year-old grandma and her toddler grandson at a Publix in Royal Palm Beach, Florida.

Wall is not believed to have known either of his victims, with cops currently treating the double-murder suicide as a horrific random attack.

Bradshaw said: 'Somebody knew about it, that bad things were going to happen with this guy; and number 2 is, obviously, there's a mental unstableness involving this.'

He added: 'There was a chance this could be stopped - you know why? The reason is - he's on Facebook. He has said "I want to kill people and children." He's got friends. Obviously they saw that.'

'His ex wife say's he's been acting strange. He thinks he's being followed. he's paranoid,' Bradshaw continued. 'You think a damn soul told us about that? No.'

another source: https://www.al.com/news/2021/06/florida-publix-shooter-posted-i-want-to-kill-people-sheriff-says.html

The gunman who stalked and then fatally shot a grandmother and her 1-year-old grandson inside a Florida supermarket had been threatening to kill people, including children, on his Facebook page but no one reported him, a Florida sheriff said Friday.

Timothy J. Wall, 55, had been making the threats for some time before he walked into a Publix in Royal Palm Beach on Thursday, stalked his victims in the produce aisle before first shooting the child and then the woman before killing himself, Palm Beach County Sheriff Ric Bradshaw and his detectives said. Detectives have found no connection between Wall and the woman.

“He has said, ‘I want to kill people and children.’ He’s got friends. Obviously, they saw that. His ex-wife said that he has been acting strange. He thinks he is being followed. He’s paranoid. Do you think a damn soul told us about that? No,” Bradshaw said at a press conference. “If it sounds like I’m angry, I am.”
