A white Tesla Model S was sitting in a Rancho Cordova, Calif., wrecking yard earlier this month - having been severely damaged in a collision three weeks earlier - when it suddenly erupted in flames, according to the Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District.
When firefighters arrived, the electric car was totally engulfed. Every time the blaze was momentarily extinguished, the car's battery compartment reignited, the fire department wrote in an Instagram post. Firefighters and wrecking yard workers tried turning the car on its side to aim water directly onto the battery pack. But "the vehicle would still re-ignite due to the residual heat," the department wrote.
So they tried something else: They used a tractor to create a pit in the dirt, managed to get the car inside, then filled the hole with water. That allowed the firefighters to submerge the battery pack and ultimately extinguish the fire, which burned hotter than 3,000 degrees, Capt. Parker Wilbourn, a fire department spokesman, told The Washington Post.
All told, it took more than an hour and 4,500 gallons of water for the dozen firefighters to extinguish the blaze, Wilbourn said - about the same amount of water used to put out a building fire.
Allegations of 'odd' and inappropriate behavior before police chief's firing
CLINTON COUNTY, Ohio (WXIX) - The police chief recently fired from New Vienna after allegedly arresting a man without a warrant was previously let go from one Tri-State police department and was the subject of an inquiry by another for behavior described as “odd.”
Darnell Pate served as New Vienna’s police chief for a matter of months before he was terminated after a judge determined he acted without legal authority in arresting a man, towing his vehicle and “hold[ing] it for ransom.”
Concerns were also raised about the New Vienna Police Department towing vehicles for minor infractions and charging late fees for citizens to recover their cars, a trend the judge derided as “policing for money.”
Pate worked previously for the Addyston Police Department.
Addyston Police Chief Eric Pennekamp says Pate was fired after he falsely represented himself as a K9 officer to get free dog food from a pet store. Pate has sued the department claiming he was terminated because of his race.
Pennekamp claims Pate was on a three-day suspension for inappropriate tasing when he was let go.
New allegations surfaced Thursday concerning Pate’s time with the Mt. Healthy Police Department
Mt. Healthy Police Chief Vince DeMasi says a citizen called in March 2022 saying someone was arresting people in an unmarked SUV and that the person wasn’t a Mt. Healthy police officer.

Healthy (Hamilton County) Police informed New Vienna Mayor Kathi Stone by letter dated March 27 that Pate had allegedly been using his New Vienna police vehicle to work as a security guard at a local bar, allegedly using an “unmarked police vehicle patrolling the parking area ordering bar patrons into the vehicle” and that Pate had been “picking up patrons of the bar and releasing” them after “sitting stationary for a short period of time.”

Haley Carter, who also chairs Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner's Commission Against Gun Violence, "voluntarily stepped down," she said, after failed congressional hopeful, former RV salesman and conservative talk show host Jesse Kelly sicced his hundreds of thousands of Twitter followers on her and her family Wednesday. Kelly said he took exception to Carter's political views and even posted a photo of her child in an effort to intimidate Friendswood officials into canceling her inclusion in the parade.
After the city announced Carter was receiving threats of violence, Kelly celebrated, saying "UPDATE: She's gone" and declaring his actions as part of "The New Right," described by Vanity Fair's James Pogue as "a project to overthrow the thrust of progress, at least such as liberals understand the word." In Kelly's plea to his followers, he lamented that Carter was "into trans activism" and pointed out that she took her excited son to a drag show in Las Vegas to see his "favorite Queen."
While Kelly's insular following applauded his maneuver, others spoke in support for Carter. Turner, who appointed her to the city of Houston's commission in 2018, called her an "American hero" and role model.
"Simply put, Haley is the best of us," Turner said in a statement released Thursday afternoon. "It is no wonder that her hometown of Friendswood chose to honor her in their Fourth of July parade. Haley embodies everything the uniquely American holiday represents. Freedom. Independence. Love of country. In other words, the perfect Fourth of July grand marshal.

Insurance company owner's daughter takes blame for that racist Juneteenth sign
Harry E. Reed Insurance Agency issued an apology for the sign through its employee, Melanie Higgins, who said in a statement she typically posts “snarky” signs on the door outside the office around holidays or other big events.
She said the owner of the business, Karen Hansen, had nothing to do with her sign. Hansen is Higgins’s mother and the two are the only employees at the small business, which Hansen founded more than 30 years ago.
Higgins acknowledged the sign was “flippant” and perceived as racist “because of the terminology I used regarding foods that are associated with ethnicities.”
Associating fried chicken with Black Americans is a common racist trope.
“My only explanation I can offer is I had a death in my family and I just wanted to go home and I quickly wrote the note. I can assure you all truly, I would never in any facet of the word be characterized a racist. Nor would I ever purposely incite such acts,” she wrote in her statement. “I am so sorry for pain I have caused and the negative attention it has brought.”
