Vulnerable immigrants conned into spending life savings on worthless land in California City

Silver Saddle now sits closed and remains in state receivership following a lawsuit slapped on it by the California Department of Business Oversight.
Along the way she spoke with several people, many of them immigrants, who had invested upwards of tens of thousands of dollars in land sales deals only to come away with empty wallets and shattered dreams.
I went looking into Silver Saddle and spoke with a number of people who invested with Silver Saddle, all of whom had very similar stories of what had happened to them there, Guerin said, including how those people had felt they had been pressured into buying investment products they barely understood.

California City
Deep in the Mojave Desert, there is a little town with a big name and a bizarre history: California City. For decades, real estate developers have sold a dream here: if you buy land now, youll be rich one day. Thousands of people bought this dream. Many were young couples and hard-working immigrants looking to build a better future. But much of the land they bought is nearly worthless. In this new podcast from LAist Studios, host Emily Guerin tells a story of money, power and deception.

Trump administration to wind down DACA. will reject new apps, limit renewals to 1 year
WASHINGTON The White House announced Tuesday that the United States will take steps to wind down legal protections for hundreds of thousands of immigrants brought into the country as children, often called Dreamers, while it conducts a legal review after the Supreme Court rejected President Donald Trump's plan to end the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, better known as DACA.
A senior administration official said that despite the Supreme Court ruling, the White House still viewed the DACA program as illegal and that the court ruling left room for the administration to pursue other ways of ending the program. The Trump administration would limit the scope of DACA while the administration reviews its legality, the official said.
While the program is under review, the Trump administration announced it will reject initial requests and application fees for new filings, will consider all applications for renewal on a case by case basis but will limit the provision to one year rather than a two-year renewal, and will reject all applications for advance parole absent extraordinary circumstances.

Adults under 35 more likely to identify as liberal than conservative
In January and February, an average of 40% of Americans identified as politically conservative. This was up from an average of 37% in 2019 and was tied for the highest rate of conservatism Gallup had recorded in the past six years. This coincided with President Donald Trump being acquitted of impeachment charges. It also came amidst strongly positive economic signals in the form of near-record-low unemployment and the Dow Jones Industrial Average reaching record highs.
Nevertheless, the percentage of Americans identifying as conservative reverted to an average 37% in March and April as the coronavirus pandemic emerged. It fell further to 34% in May and June as the pandemic has worn on, Trump's job approval rating has tumbled, and the racial justice movement emerged as a national focus following the death of George Floyd.
Meanwhile, the percentages identifying as liberal increased from an average of 22% in January/February to 26% in May/June.
Gallup measures Americans' ideology by asking respondents to describe their overall political views as either very conservative, conservative, moderate, liberal or very liberal.

Protest erupts at a Tahoe ice cream shop after owner makes violent comments about Black Lives Matter
According to a story by This Is Reno, the owner, Beth Moxley, wrote comments in response to a Facebook post of a Black Lives Matter Protest showing demonstrators surrounding vehicles on a freeway, where she wrote Who let the ANIMALS out of their cages??? and Oh look
MOVING TARGET PRACTICE.
Lily Baran, a Black activist in Reno, commented in response asking Also you just threatened to shoot me? to which Moxley responded, WE are law abiding citizens. Apparently you have no respect for the law, and as well as, Kill or be killed. Thats what the world has come to.
Last weeks protest was organized by Barans friends after she protested outside the shop alone a few days earlier, which resulted in the local police being called on her.
Calling the police on a Black person who was unarmed and has not harmed you is unacceptable and should be illegal. It directly threatens my life, Baran told This Is Reno. Not to mention its terrifying, you know, fiddling with their guns, not wearing a mask while speaking with me as well, directly harmful. I feel traumatized for sure from the situation.
After eight hours of protesting, Moxley came outside, approached the protesters, and asked What do I do?
Baran then asked her to make a donation to Color of Change, a racial justice organization, and explained to her how calling the police on unarmed Black people is dangerous, which she did by referencing the murders of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor. Moxley apologized and said, Black Lives Matter.

In the duration of the protest, multiple phone calls were made by organizers to Beth in an attempt to have her come to the protest to have a civil conversation regarding her beliefs and posts on Facebook.
Beth told the organizers that she intended to arrive, but did not do so.
Following the period of time in which protestors waited for Beth to arrive, protestors chose to move to a die-in on the driveway of Sweet Tahoe time.
