Trump Tries To Appeal To 'Housewives' And White Suburbs, But His Views Seem Outdated

https://www.npr.org/2020/07/26/895228366/trumps-trying-to-appeal-to-real-housewives-and-white-suburbs-but-they-re-declini

-----------

And it's especially bad among suburban women. In the latest NPR/PBS NewsHour/Marist poll, 66% of suburban women disapproved of the job President Trump is doing overall, and 58% said they "strongly" disapprove.

That is stunning, considering suburban women have been a particular focus of Republicans in the last 20 years, dubbed everything from "soccer moms" to "security moms" to "Walmart moms."

Whatever you call them, they're not in Trump's corner — and the consequences have been massive for Republicans. They have been unable to pass any major legislative items since Democrats wrested control of the House in 2018. Democrats were able to do so because of their surprising strength in right-leaning suburban districts.

Trump needs them back, and he's trying to use fear to do it. Amid COVID-19 spikes, Trump is trying to change the subject, running an ad called "Abolished." It makes the case that "You won't be safe in Joe Biden's America," because police departments would be defunded — even though Biden has said he's not in favor of defunding the police.

And Trump seems to be trying to make his case with an anachronistic racial appeal to a declining audience.

Trump has claimed that if his Democratic opponent were elected president, "our suburbs" would be destroyed. In recent weeks, he specifically called out a 2015 Obama-era fair-housing initiative that requires local governments to address historic patterns of racial desegregation.

"Your home will go down in value, and crime rates will rapidly rise," Trump said. "People have worked all their lives to get into a community, and now they're going to watch it go to hell. Not going to happen, not while I'm here."

But the suburbs have grown more diverse since the mid-20th century, when they were overwhelmingly white. The suburbs saw an explosion of growth then, as "white flight" from cities took hold.

----------------

That kind of appeal, pitting whites against Blacks and Latinos, is outdated, Republican pollster Christine Matthews told NPR's Tamara Keith.

"He thinks it's basically the planned development of Levittown in the 1960s as opposed to today's suburbs, which are multiracial, diverse and highly educated," Matthews said.

Trump's view of women's role in — or out of — the home is also antiquated. At his Tulsa, Okla., rally last month, he made up a story for effect that seems to have been a predecessor for the "Abolished" ad now running. He warned of what would happen, in his view, if police were "defunded."

-------------------------

But the percentage of mothers who stay at home has declined significantly from the 1960s, when they were about half of all mothers.

Today they're about a quarter, according to Pew:

1967: 49%
2016 (latest data): 27%

John Saxon Dies, A Nightmare on Elm Street, Enter the Dragon Star and Cult Icon Was 83
The actor and martial artist worked on more than 200 projects during the span of his career, which was over 60 years.

A Nightmare on Elm Street actor John Saxon has passed away. He was 83-years old. Saxon died of pneumonia in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, according to his wife, Gloria. The actor and martial artist worked on more than 200 projects during the span of his career, which was over 60 years, including three of the A Nightmare on Elm Street movies under the direction of Wes Craven. In addition, Saxon starred alongside martial arts legend Bruce Lee in Enter the Dragon.

John Saxon earned a Golden Globe for his portrayal of a Mexican bandit opposite Marlon Brando in The Appaloosa (1966). Saxon also had a recurring role on Dynasty as Rashid Ahmed and Falcon Crest, though this is barely scratching the surface of Saxon's lengthy career. He gained notoriety throughout his career and enjoyed working with Bruce Lee on Enter the Dragon in 1973. The roles was Lee's last and he respected what Saxon brought to the table when they were filming. "[Lee] took me seriously. I would tell him I would rather do it this way, and he'd say, 'OK, try it that way," recalled Saxon in 2012.

“Today it finally starts again,” the company wrote in an Instagram post ahead of the departure. “Mein Schiff 2 is ready and so are we.”

The ship sailed toward Norway for a three-night scenic cruise in the North Sea. Without stopping at any other ports, it’s scheduled to return to Germany on Monday morning.

The German news agency DPA reported that the massive ship, which usually has a capacity of 2,900 travelers, is carrying 1,200 guests.

The company said that 1,740 people (or 60% of capacity) would be allowed to travel, but the quota wasn’t met.

bankruptcies run rampant in July

Big chains filed for bankruptcy and closed stores every week in July. Here are 9 of them

New York (CNN Business)Coronavirus, massive amounts of debt and a shift in shopping habits created a lethal cocktail of bankruptcies and store closures in July.

So far this year, 21 private and public retailers have filed for Chapter 11 according to BankruptcyData.com. That's more than double the number that filed for the same time period last year. In total, 20 retailers filed for bankruptcy protection in 2019.

"A retail sector already in upheaval in the face of changing consumer habits in 2019 is now additionally faced with a massive demand shock for which there is no cure," said James Hammond, the CEO of New Generation Research.

"Storied names in the industry, some operating for over 100 years, like Brooks Brothers, have fallen," he added. "Even the strong can't survive. This is far from over." (New Generation Research runs BankruptcyData.com.)

The United States Navy just applied for permission to potentially kill up to 51 orcas in the Puget S

https://forcechange.com/565970/u-s-navy-dont-needlessly-murder-over-50-endangered-orcas/

The United States Navy just applied for permission to potentially kill up to 51 orcas in the Puget Sound. They applied for an exemption to the Marine Mammal Protection Act in the form of something called an ‘incidental take.’ To ‘incidentally take’ an animal essentially means an expected accident in which the animal is injured, hunted, harassed, or killed. This means that the Navy is asking permission to do activities, such as conducting training exercises, that they normally wouldn’t be allowed to do because it would adversely affect the orca population.

This year has been a devastating year for orca. The Salish Sea, which is legally considered the orca’s ‘core critical habitat,’ saw historically low numbers of orca returning in the spring. The prey that the orca feeds on is also in significant decline. The Washington Southern Resident Killer Whale Recovery Task Force has recommended that steps be put in place to reduce noise in the Salish Sea where the orca live because adding sound pollution to hunting and breeding grounds affects the animal’s ability to communicate, hunt, and evade danger.
