Trump's fake accent angers Asian Americans as they veer left
When Amanda Berg heard reports that President Donald Trump mocked the accents of the leaders of South Korea and Japan at a recent fundraiser, it brought back painful memories from her childhood.
Berg, a Korean American who grew up in Fort Collins, Colorado, recalled kids doing the "stereotypical pulling at the eyes and the mocking accent." It made her feel like she was a foreigner in her own community.
Berg, a registered Democrat, is among a growing and crucial bloc of Asian American voters leaning further to the left in the age of Trump, and his stunt, reported by the New York Post, angered her and many others.
"It empowers people who would be predisposed to doing that kind of thing anyway," said Berg, a high school English teacher in Denver. "And it makes it acceptable to be openly, increasingly discriminating."

A Pew Research Center survey said 53% of Asian American registered voters in 1998 identified with the Democratic Party. That figure rose to 65% in 2017.
"They are adding more and more new voters to the electorate," Masuoka said. "Alongside Latino immigrants, they're important for candidates to mobilize."
Asian American voters also could become a key factor in swing states. In Nevada, Asians make up 5% of registered voters and 9% of the eligible voting population. They comprise 5% of registered voters in Virginia and are 6% of the eligible voting population.

President Trump is facing backlash for mocking South Korean and Japanese officials with faux Asian accents on Friday, according to the New York Post.
At fundraising events in the Hamptons for his 2020 campaign, Trump mocked South Korean leader Moon Jae-in’s accent when “describing how he caved in to Trump’s tough negotiations,” the New York Post wrote. He also imitated Shinzo Abe with a fake Japanese accent when discussing their conversations over trade tariffs.
According to the Rolling Stone, Trump “wasn’t done being politically incorrect or offensive.” He continued to speak about his fascination with Abe’s father, who was a kamikaze pilot. He asked Abe if the pilots were inebriated or drugged — Abe said no, they just love their country.
“Imagine they get in a plane with half a tank of gas and fly into steel ships just for the love of their country!” said Trump.
This wasn’t the first time Trump came under fire for mimicking Asian accents. In February, Twitter users accused him of imitating a Chinese accent when speaking about Xi Jinping’s policies on drugs in China.
“Death penalty. We give death penalty to people that sell drugs. End of problem,” Trump said as an impression of Xi.
The president has also mocked Asian reporters before. In November 2018, a reporter with an accent asked him about the economy after the midterm elections, according to the Huffington Post.
Trump interrupted, “Where are you from?”
When the reporter responded “Japan,” Trump said “Say hello to Shinzo for me.”
The reporter continued to ask the question, but Trump said, “I don’t understand you.”

Leon van Biljon, 70, was killed by his own captive lions Tuesday at Mahala View Lion Lodge in Cullinan as he attempted to fix a broken fence, the Times of the UK reported.
The three lions that attacked the lodge owner were reportedly shot dead so medics could attempt to save him.
“The neighbors from the nearby lodges responded and tried to help the victim but unfortunately the victim succumbed to injuries. The animals have been put down,” Cullinan Police spokeswoman Connie Moganedi told CNN.
His death was confirmed by the Mahala View Lodge in a Facebook post.
“Great loss for everyone,” the lodge said. “R.I.P. Uncle Leon.”

WASHINGTON ― President Donald Trump has filed financial disclosure statements that appear to misstate the value and profitability of his Scotland golf courses by $165 million, possibly violating federal laws that are punishable by jail time.
Trump claimed in his 2018 U.S. filing that his Turnberry and Aberdeen resorts were each worth more than $50 million. For that same time period, he filed balance sheets with the United Kingdom government showing that their combined debt exceeded their assets by 47.9 million British pounds ― the equivalent of $64.8 million at the exchange rate on Dec. 31, 2017, the date of the last U.K. filing available.
His 2018 “public financial disclosure” filed with the U.S. Office of Government Ethics also claims those two resorts earned him “income” of $23.8 million. His filings with the U.K. Companies House office in Edinburgh for that period showed the resorts had actually lost 4.6 million pounds ― equal to $6.3 million.
His U.S. disclosure statement also fails to mention $199.5 million in loans Trump has made to those resorts: $54.9 million from him personally to Trump International, Scotland in Aberdeenshire; $144.6 million from his trust to Trump Turnberry in Ayrshire.
Knowingly providing false or incomplete information on that form is a violation of the Ethics in Government Act punishable by up to a year in jail. Signing the form attesting to the untrue information constitutes making a false statement, punishable by up to five years in prison.

CARLSBAD — California Highway Patrol officers rescued a 17-year-old girl Monday evening who was bound and gagged in the back of a car, but in a bizarre twist, investigators later learned her abductors were her father and sister trying to take her to a drug rehabilitation center in Mexico, authorities said.
A witness called 911 around 7 p.m. Monday after spotting the teen tied up in the back of a 2014 Toyota Corolla on southbound Interstate 5 near the Orange County border, CHP spokesman Officer Kevin Smale said.
Highway Patrol officers searching for the car on the freeway found it and stopped it about 7:20 p.m. near the Cannon Road exit off I-5, Smale said.
Investigators said the girl’s 67-year-old father and his 21-year-old daughter, both from San Juan Capistrano, had abducted her, Smale said.
“It was the intent of the father and sister to transport the juvenile to Mexico to a drug treatment facility,” Smale said in a statement. “The 17-year-old female admitted to using methamphetamine for the past year.”
Officers took the 17-year-old into protective custody, Smale said.

Scientists were reintroducing 15 mud-caked tortoises to this urban forest where they had once been plentiful. Children were running around. People were oohing and aahing. A stern-looking security guard briefly appeared to smile.
But not government biologist Katyucha Silva. She was thinking about dogs.
What would they do to these turtles? What were they doing to Brazil?
It’s a question more researchers are beginning to ask in a country where there are more dogs than children — and where dogs are quickly becoming the most destructive predator. They’re invading nature preserves and national parks. They’re forming packs, some 15 dogs strong, and are hunting wild prey. They’ve muscled out native predators such as foxes and big cats in nature preserves, outnumbering pumas 25 to 1 and ocelots 85 to 1.
Every year, they become still more plentiful, spreading diseases, disrupting natural environments, goosing scientists who set up elaborate camera systems to photograph wild animals, only to come away with pictures of curious canines.
“It’s a difficult thing for people to hear,” said Isadora Lessa, a Rio de Janeiro biologist who wrote her doctoral dissertation on domestic dogs causing environmental mayhem. “They love dogs too much.”
How the dog became one of the world’s most harmful invasive mammalian predators is as much a global story as a Brazilian one. Over the last century, as the human population exploded, so did the dog population, growing to an estimated 1 billion.
That has been great for people — and even better for dogs — but less so for nature, according to a growing body of academic research implicating canines, particularly the free-roaming ones, in environmental destruction.

El Paso shooting widower receives new car after old one stolen following wife's funeral
The original SUV sustained damage to its windshield, hood and roof after it was reportedly stolen and wrecked, according to tow truck driver Eduardo Moreno with El Paso Towing. Moreno towed the vehicle back to Basco’s home for free, after recognizing his name from media coverage.
Basco told the towing company that a pressure washing machine, which had been inside a trailer parked next to the SUV, was also stolen, according to Moreno.
Casa Ford Dealership stepped up to replace Basco’s SUV with one that’s the same color as the original he shared with his wife. Basco also received a trailer from Desert Haven Trailers and an installed hitch.
“He’s obviously still very torn up because of the tragedy that occurred, so he’s extremely grateful. Honestly, from my perspective, [he’s] a humble man who doesn’t want a lot of attention and he’s received a lot, so we just want to offer this," said Ronnie Lowenfield, co-owner of the dealership.
