White House says it is creating 'very large' dossier on Washington Post journalist and others

New York (CNN Business)The White House said in a story published Thursday that it was compiling a "very large" dossier on a Pulitzer Prize-winning Washington Post reporter and others who it said are a "disgrace to journalism and the American people."

The astonishing revelation about the White House's efforts to discredit reporter David Fahrenthold came after The Post requested comment for a Thursday story he wrote with two colleagues. The story, co-bylined by reporters Josh Dawsey and Joshua Partlow, detailed how President Trump's company "charged the U.S. government more than $900,000" for hotel rooms fees among other services at Mar-a-Lago.

In a statement, White House spokesperson Judd Deere accused The Washington Post of "blatantly interfering with the business relationships of the Trump Organization" and demanded "it must stop."

"Please be advised that we are building up a very large 'dossier' on the many false David Fahrenthold and others stories as they are a disgrace to journalism and the American people," Deere said.

When asked by CNN Business for further information about the dossier, Deere declined to comment. Neither White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany nor White House director of communications Alyssa Farah responded to additional emails seeking comment.

Trump Is Flaunting His Impunity

Trump Is Flaunting His Impunity
The real message of the Republican National Convention is that the president can get away with almost anything.

Incumbent presidents have two goals for their renomination convention: Show voters what they’ve achieved in their first four years, and tell them what they want to do with another four.

Donald Trump and his Republican Party have skipped the second part—the president has repeatedly whiffed on articulating a second-term agenda, and the Republican National Convention has decided not to bother with a platform. As for achievements, the administration has little to go on there, either. Most of Trump’s 2016 agenda remains incomplete, stalled, or never begun, while the economy is in a tailspin and nearly 180,000 Americans have died from COVID-19.

Yet Trump is using the RNC to show the nation what he has learned over the past four years: the power of impunity. Throughout the convention, Trump, his family, and his aides are using the backdrop of the federal government, in defiance of precedent, propriety, and likely federal law. The president is not so much showing the majesty of the federal government—this is not its finest hour—as reveling in the knowledge that no one can or will stop him. It is a flex for its own sake, and at heart, that is his message about what he will deliver in a second term, too.

On Tuesday, first lady Melania Trump spoke from the newly redesigned Rose Garden. Donald Trump used the convention to perform the functions of the presidency, taping videos at the White House in which he pardoned a convicted bank robber and took part in the naturalization of five new American citizens. Meanwhile, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo delivered a speech to the convention from Jerusalem. On Thursday, the president will deliver his nomination acceptance speech from the South Lawn of the White House.

Each of these is potentially a violation of the Hatch Act, a federal law designed to prevent officeholders from using taxpayer money, and staffers working on the public tab, to further their own political campaigns. (The president and vice president are exempt.)

Oahu Is Shutting Down Again as Cases Explode

https://www.newser.com/story/295452/oahu-is-hitting-reset-on-its-covid-response.html?utm_source=part&utm_medium=uol&utm_campaign=rss_world_img_b

Over the past four weeks Hawaii's coronavirus cases have jumped from just 1,688 since the start of the pandemic to 6,700, and the governor is taking a big step to get those numbers headed back in the right direction. "In March and April, we were successful in flattening the curve," Democrat David Ige said Tuesday. "We need to get that back under control." To do so, he's placing the island of Oahu—the state's most populous—back under a "stay-at-home, work-from-home" order that goes into effect for two weeks starting at 12:01am local time Thursday. Honolulu's mayor added, per NBC News, "This will be different from the last time. We're going to reset what we're doing."

Testing and contact tracing will also be increased, and a hotel with hundreds of rooms has been booked to quarantine patients away from friends and family. During the two-week period, essential businesses including childcare, healthcare, construction, and some educational services will still be allowed to operate, and religious services will be allowed to take place, Hawaii News Now reports. Non-essential businesses including retailers, salons, barbershops, and gyms will have to close, and beaches and parks, which were shut down more than two weeks ago, will remain closed. Restaurants may only offer takeout. Bars were already shut back down three weeks ago.

The Most Craven Lie on Night 3 of the RNC Came from Kayleigh McEnany

The Most Craven Lie on Night 3 of the RNC Came from Kayleigh McEnany
“Here was the leader of the free world caring about me.”

Wednesday night, White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany went on prime time TV during the third night of the Republican National Convention and told what might be one of the biggest lies of the evening. President Trump, she said, “stands by Americans with preexisting conditions.”

To prove it, McEnany told a personal story. “Tonight, I’m here to share with you how he supported me—both as a new mom and as an American with a preexisting condition,” she said. She described how, in 2018, she decided to have a preventative double mastectomy and reconstructive surgery because she carries the BRCA 2 genetic mutation that put her at high risk for breast cancer as well as a host of other deadly cancers like ovarian cancer.

McEnany was moved when Trump called her after her reconstruction surgery to see how she was doing. “I was blown away,” she said. “Here was the leader of the free world caring about me.”

What McEnany didn’t tell the national audience was that the Trump administration is at this very moment fighting in court to end protections for people with preexisting conditions like hers.
It has supported a lawsuit, brought by Republican state attorneys general, that would overturn the Affordable Care Act, better known as Obamacare. Despite many promises to do so, the Trump administration has not proposed any new health plan to replace it. As a result, the ACA is still the only federal law that requires health insurers to cover preexisting conditions. Without it, insurers will be free to return to the bad old days, when they could deny coverage to people with chronic illnesses or jack up premiums for those who got sick.

Little girl drifts half mile out to sea on inflatable unicorn, gets rescued by ferry

https://nypost.com/2020/08/25/little-girl-drifts-out-to-sea-on-inflatable-unicorn/

The girl, about 4 or 5 years old, drifted for about a half-mile after escaping her parents’ attention.

When they realized their daughter was missing, the frantic couple informed port officials, who alerted the captain of the ferry Salaminomachos.

“I was approaching the port of Antirio and I was notified by the Port Authority that a child, who I did not expect to be so small, had been swept away by the currents on a nearby beach, which is near the port pier,” Capt. Grigoris Karnesis told the news outlet.

The skipper soon caught sight of the bobbing girl and steered his vessel to pluck her and the unicorn out of the water.

“She was frozen from her fear, because the current was very strong. I put the ship in such a position so as not to affect the small buoy,” Karnesis said.

“I placed it in such a way that the ship was not affected by ripples, because if the buoy sank we would have serious problems. We approached it slowly and we were able to rescue the child,” he continued.
