Poll. Most want abortion on the ballot and would vote overwhelmingly to make it legal

Most Americans want chance to support abortion rights on state ballot, USA TODAY/Ipsos poll finds

Americans overwhelmingly would like to be able to vote on an abortion measure on their state ballot, an exclusive USA TODAY/Ipsos Poll finds. And if they had the chance, they would oppose efforts to ban the procedure by almost 2-1.

The survey, taken in the aftermath of the stunning defeat in Kansas last week of a proposal to remove abortion rights from the state constitution, is more evidence of a backlash to the Supreme Court's decision that allows states to sharpen restrictions on abortion or bar it entirely.

Seven in 10 say they would support using a ballot measure to decide abortion rights in their state, an idea backed across party lines, by 73% of Democrats, 77% of Republicans and 67% of independents. Democrats are the most energized on the issue; 43% say they "strongly support" putting abortion on the ballot.

If there were a ballot measure in their state, those polled would vote by 54%-28
% in favor of making abortion legal. Democrats support legal abortion in their state by 7-1 (76%-10%) and independents by 2-1 (52%-27%). Among Republicans, 34% would support abortion rights and 54% would oppose them, a worrisome fissure for the party that has long been identified with the anti-abortion movement.

At particular risk for the GOP are two groups of swing voters. Suburbanites by 56%-26% say they would vote to support abortion rights in a ballot measure. And women by 60%-25% would support an abortion rights initiative, significantly more than the backing among men of 47%-32%.

Albuquerque murders were Sunni vs Shiite..man possibly angry over daughter's marriage

Police announced a breakthrough Tuesday in the killings of four Muslim men in Albuquerque, New Mexico, charging a man from Afghanistan — himself a Muslim — with two of the slayings and identifying him as a prime suspect in the other killings that put the entire community on edge.

Muhammad Syed, 51, was taken into custody a day earlier after a traffic stop more than 100 miles away, authorities said.

Three of the four ambush shootings happened in the last two weeks. Police Chief Harold Medina said it was not clear yet whether the deaths should be classified as hate crimes or serial killings or both.

Investigators received a tip from the city’s Muslim community that pointed toward Syed, who has lived in the U.S. for about five years, police said.

Police were looking into possible motives, including an unspecified “interpersonal conflict.”

When asked specifically if Syed, a Sunni Muslim, was angry that his daughter married a Shiite Muslim, Deputy Police Cmdr. Kyle Hartsock did not respond directly. He said “motives are still being explored fully to understand what they are.”

A Texas church performed an unauthorized production of "Hamilton w added religious stuff/ anti lgbt

A Texas church performed "Hamilton" this weekend, but the team behind the Tony-award winning production says it shouldn't have happened.

"'Hamilton' does not grant amateur or professional licenses for any stage productions and did not grant one to The Door Church," Shane Marshall Brown, a spokesperson for "Hamilton," said in a statement to CNN on Monday.

Officials behind the musical were not aware of the "unauthorized staging" until the day after the church's first of two scheduled performances and sent a cease-and-desist letter, the spokesperson added.

The Door, a church in McAllen, a town in South Texas, was allowed to continue with its planned second performance, with conditions, among them that the show would not be live streamed, recorded or shared on social media in photo or video form, according to the statement.

The Door performed "Hamilton" on Aug. 5 and 6 with edited content that included lyrical references to Jesus and Christianity throughout, according to footage of the production shared on social media. A sermon reportedly delivered to the audience also compared homosexuality to drug addiction, according to video.

In an additional statement provided to CNN late Monday, the spokesperson said they were not aware "of the extensive changes to the show or that there would be a sermon at the end" when they allowed Saturday's performance to move forward.

North Dakota's only abortion clinic tried to raise $20k for move to Minnesota..raised $1 million

Fargo abortion clinic fundraiser tops $1 million for move to Moorhead
The Red River Women's Clinic is preparing to relocate to Moorhead in light of North Dakota's near complete abortion ban set to take effect August 26.

FARGO — A fund established to help the only abortion clinic in North Dakota move across the border to Moorhead in order to remain open has reached a significant milestone.

An online fundraiser for the Red River Women’s Clinic in Fargo topped the $1 million mark over the weekend prior to Monday, Aug. 8.

The account was created in late June after the U.S. Supreme Court effectively overturned the landmark Roe v. Wade decision, leaving it up to states to decide abortion rights.

North Dakota was among more than a dozen states with “trigger” laws on their books, which would effectively ban abortion if Roe no longer applied.

The initial fundraising goal on behalf of the Red River Women's Clinic was $20,000 but was continually adjusted upward as donations rolled in.

Clinic director Tammi Kromenaker said the milestone mark almost doesn't feel real.

“I literally had to bend over to catch my breath when someone told me it had hit $1 million,” she said.

Kromenaker said she’s “humbled and grateful” for the overwhelming amount of support from local, national and international donors.

“They clearly want Red River Women’s Clinic to continue providing abortion care to the region. These funds will guarantee that reality,” she said.

The total as of 5 p.m. Monday was $1,001,690, with a $15,000 donation made in honor of Jane Hella putting it over $1 million mark.

Campaign to get abortion ban on Colorado ballot fails to collect enough signatures

Backers of a ballot initiative that would have banned abortion in Colorado failed to get enough signatures by the deadline Monday, so the measure won’t be on the November ballot.

Initiative 56, “unlawful murder of a child,” would have prevented abortion at any stage of pregnancy and did not make exceptions for rape or incest.

Supporters needed to collect nearly 125,000 valid signatures, but they fell short of the required number, organizers confirmed. The campaign refused to say exactly how many signatures they obtained and said representatives did not turn in any signatures on Monday to the Colorado Secretary of State.

The grassroots effort to pass the measure was led by a group of women in northeast Colorado whom “pro-life leaders” asked to push forward an initiative to “keep the momentum going” after Proposition 115, said spokeswoman Faye Barnhart, who lives outside of Fort Morgan. Voters rejected the measure in 2020, which would have banned abortion at 22 weeks.

Colorado voters have voted down four other measures since 2008 that would have restricted abortions, and the Democratic-led state legislature passed a law this year that would guarantee the right to an abortion at any point in pregnancy without government interference.

Nebraska Cops Subpoenaed A Teen's Facebook DMs So They Could Prosecute Her For Having An Abortion

A Nebraska teenager is facing criminal charges alleging she aborted a fetus in violation of state law, after authorities obtained her Facebook messages using a search warrant. Seventeen-year-old Celeste Burgess, who is being tried as an adult along with her mother Jessica Burgess, is awaiting trial in Madison County District Court on charges that they broke a Nebraska law banning abortions after 20 weeks.

This marks one of the first instances of a person’s Facebook activity being used to incriminate her in a state where abortion access is restricted — a scenario that has remained largely hypothetical in the weeks following the US Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade. Nebraska currently outlaws abortions beyond 20 weeks. On Monday, Republican lawmakers in the state failed to secure enough votes to decrease that window to 12 weeks.

Celeste and her mother were charged in July with allegedly removing, concealing or abandoning a dead human body and concealing the death of another person after the Norfolk Police Department received a tip claiming Celeste had miscarried in April at 23 weeks of pregnancy and secretly buried the fetus with her mother's help.

While Celeste told police that she had suffered a miscarriage, they continued to investigate, serving Facebook with a search warrant to access Celeste and Jessica’s Facebook accounts. They subsequently found messages between the mother and daughter allegedly detailing how Celeste had undergone a self-managed abortion with Jessica’s help. There are four states that ban abortion at 24 weeks, and more than a dozen that broadly ban it at the start of fetal viability.

'She is a legend': California fire lookout, 73, dies in McKinney Fire

https://www.sfgate.com/california-wildfires/article/california-fire-lookout-dies-in-mckinney-fire-17359736.php

A 73-year-old California woman who worked as a lookout, watching for wildfires from U.S. Forest Service towers in Siskiyou County, died in the McKinney Fire, officials said.

Kathy Shoopman's first post was in 1974 at the Baldy Mountain lookout in the Klamath National Forest, just west of the small town of Happy Camp, a statement from the U.S. Forest Service said. She went on to staff the Buckhorn and Lake Mountain lookouts.

For nearly 50 years, Shoopman lived in Klamath River (pop. 200), a town that was nearly entirely wiped out by flames. Homes, including those in a trailer park, a community hall and a few other businesses were destroyed. “That fire came down on the community with 60 to 70 mph winds coming down on it,” said Tom Stokesberry, the U.S. Forest Service’s northern operations fire public affairs specialist.

Stokesberry said it’s his understanding that Shoopman was trying to evacuate when she died, but the circumstances of her death are still under investigation.
