letters to the editor about Trump's taxes

https://www.startribune.com/readers-write-trump-s-taxes-2020-election-halted-state-covid-survey-the-pandemic/572568452/

Who paid for federal hurricane relief in Florida, Texas and Louisiana? Not President Donald Trump. (“Trump’s taxes show years of not paying,” front page, Sept. 28.) Who paid the military to protect our shores and fight our wars? Not Trump. Who paid for the Food and Drug Administration to protect our food and drugs from contamination? Not Trump. Who paid for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and all their work fighting the coronavirus? Not Trump. Who paid the millions to the Secret Service to protect Trump on his golf weekends? Not Trump. Who paid for federal prisons that lock up corrupt officials? Not Trump.

Who will I vote for in November along with, I hope, millions of others? Not Trump.

Immediately after the New York Times report on Trump’s tax returns, he denounced it as “fake news.” Well, Mr. President, this time you can easily prove your claim. Release your “real” tax returns.

SALLY THOMAS, EDINA

I’ve never been a fan of Trump, for all the reasons articulated in mainstream media.

However, we must view the revelations in his tax returns with circumspection. His tax shelters are no panacea. It makes no business sense to lose a buck to save 35 cents in taxes. Trump’s tax-loss carryforwards are only deferring a collapse of his business “empire.” It speaks more to a failing business enterprise than to tax evasion. Tax avoidance, not tax evasion, is perfectly legal. Who, including House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, pays more income tax than they must?

The bigger picture is Trump is true to form. His purported “business acumen” is indeed bluster.

CHARLES CORCORAN, STILLWATER

Trump’s tax records prove that he is a tax cheat, a fraud and a con man. He shirks his obligations and lets hardworking Americans pay the taxes needed for COVID research and everything else our government does.

But that’s not the worst of it. He is personally on the hook for hundreds of millions of dollars in loans that will come due in the next several years. Who holds those loans? What power do they have over him? What will he do to avoid paying those loans, at America’s expense? Trump is a national security threat, and he is unfit for office — as are any GOP candidates who continue to support him.

more on the $750

In 2017, the president’s $750 contribution to the operations of the U.S. government was dwarfed by the $15,598 he or his companies paid in Panama, the $145,400 in India and the $156,824 in the Philippines

Why $750 Is a Satisfyingly Specific, Enraging Rallying Call - shorthand for Trump corruption

Why $750 Is a Satisfyingly Specific, Enraging Rallying Call
The figure has gained special power as a convenient shorthand for exactly how corrupt Trump is.

----

While a number like zero—the amount Trump paid in federal income taxes for a decade—risks sagging into sheer incomprehensibility, $750 is familiar and enraging. It also encapsulates the hypocrisy of a political ideology that demeans low-income Americans as the perpetrators of institutional theft, when in fact, it’s the Republican president that appears to bilk the system, through his personal finances and the implementation of a self-serving tax reform plan. Meanwhile, the Trump administration cavalierly issues dramatic cuts to SNAP, the critical food assistance program where the average beneficiary receives about $125 a month to afford meals priced at $1.39.

Such comparisons, which have flooded social media, all illustrate varying degrees of injustice. But they also point to a potentially powerful rallying call as the country careens toward the likely nightmare of a chaotic November election. Democrats have already pounced on the $750 figure—Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez slammed the president as a “walking scam—and the Times report is all but certain to play a prominent role during the first presidential debate on Tuesday.

But some have questioned whether the new findings, as damning and reprehensible as they are, will make a dent with voters. After all, abundant evidence of Trump’s relentless corruption already existed. That cynicism may risk ignoring a significant portion of the electorate—as much as 11 percent of eligible voters—who remain undecided less than 40 days till an election that could very well “break America.” As Trump and his Republican allies rely on a conservative Supreme Court, virulent conspiracy theories, and ballot obstacles to deliver his victory, what better way to cut through that toxic morass than a clear cut shorthand that sums up nearly everything wrong with him? At the very least, Trump’s apparent tax scam is an explosion more than a crack to eviscerate the narrative that our president is a self-made man—if, that is, you still believe that sort of thing.

"the Apprentice" earned Trump $427 million which he parlayed into $0.

https://qz.com/1909776/how-the-apprentice-saved-trump-from-financial-ruin/

“The Apprentice” may have (temporarily) saved Trump from financial ruin

In the mid-2000s, Donald Trump was drowning financially. That’s when NBC and The Apprentice threw the failed businessman a life raft.

According to a New York Times report on the US president’s taxes, Trump made $427 million off his 50% stake in The Apprentice and the subsequent licensing deals the NBC reality series helped to develop. At the time The Apprentice debuted in 2004, many of Trump’s business ventures were hemorrhaging millions, and he was about to lose his ability to exploit a loophole in US tax code that let him avoid paying taxes for years.

But then The Apprentice swooped in, which not only kept Trump’s finances afloat but also rescued his brand from the brink of irrelevance. Trump hosted the show—filmed on a makeshift boardroom set within Trump Tower—from 2004 until 2015, when he announced a run for US president. Arnold Schwarzenegger replaced Trump as host for one season before the show was canceled in 2017.

The Apprentice made Trump appear as though he were an expert business mogul—an image he ran on in 2016 and one he continues to tout as he seeks re-election. That illusion of success was not backed up by Trump’s financial reality, the Times reported. Losses from some of his golf clubs and hotels total in the hundreds of millions. He is still personally responsible for debts and loans worth $421 million.

Before the series premiered, Trump owned only two golf courses. By the time Trump left it in 2015, he owned 15. The windfall from The Apprentice, the Times reported, financed investments in new businesses that regularly operated at losses, and entitled Trump to tax deductions.

Fox news did address the Tax story. Tonight they had a "liberal" and a MAGA

both address the issue. so MAGAs definitely are aware of the issue.

Trump would have been better served if he accepted the 400K presidential salary

then contributed the net as taxes. there is an option to pay more taxes than owed. if Trump had accepted the salary and then paid the 200K back as taxes, he's look so much better. 3 years of 200K taxes vs. $750. was he too skint to even round up to $1000??

Fashion Brand to Proud Boys: No More Shirts for You

Fashion Brand to Proud Boys: No More Shirts for You
Fred Perry doesn't want to be associated with far-right activists

British fashion brand Fred Perry would rather lose sales than be associated with the Proud Boys. The company says it has halted sales in the US and Canada of its black and yellow polo shirts, which have been adopted as a uniform by the far-right activists, the Guardian reports.

In a statement on its website, Fred Perry said it stopped selling the shirt in the US in September last year and it will not sell it in North America again "until we’re satisfied that its association with the Proud Boys has ended," reports MarketWatch. The company described the Fred Perry polo shirt as "a piece of British subcultural uniform," adding: "We are proud of its lineage and what the Laurel Wreath has represented for over 65 years: inclusivity, diversity, and independence."

The company said it was "incredibly frustrating" to see the shirt adopted by the Proud Boys, which has been labeled a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center, CNN reports. "To be absolutely clear, if you see any Proud Boys materials or products featuring our Laurel Wreath or any Black/Yellow/Yellow related items, they have absolutely nothing to do with us," the company's statement said.
