San Francisco's Millennium Tower tilted a quarter inch during four days / new plan proposed

Newly released monitoring data shows that San Francisco’s Millennium Tower tilted a quarter inch during the four days it took to install the first test pile to bedrock last month.

The monitoring data tracks settlement, tilting and water pressure levels underneath the sinking and leaning structure since work began on a fix for the troubled tower in May. Since work began to shore the sinking structure up on the north and west sides, the building has settled nearly 2 inches at the northwest corner and is now tilting more than two feet at that edge.

The latest data – including the four days that the test pile was installed from Nov. 15 to Nov. 19 – shows a quarter inch of new tilt, as well as a tenth of an inch of settlement at the time the test installation occurred. At the same time, there was marked fluctuation of water pressure below the foundation on the Mission Street side of the structure.

The water pressure level was recorded at various depths more than 100 feet below the structure, where a layer of clay resides.

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) — There’s a proposed revision to the ongoing fix for San Francisco’s leaning Millennium Tower that would scale back the amount of work that needs to be done, but some critics remain skeptical.

The original, so-called Perimeter Pile Plan called for the installation of 52 piles along Mission and Fremont Streets, to effectively prop up the tower.

-----------

The newly proposed and revised plan only calls for 18 piles that can support a heavier load, according to documents obtained by KPIX 5.

“It doesn’t smell right,” said veteran geotechnical engineer Robert Pyke.

Pyke has been a vocal critic of the tower’s voluntary retrofit, and is skeptical about this revised plan.

“The 18-pile solution is driven by the need to get the thing wrapped up and to save money. It’s nothing about optimizing it from the point of view of long-term performance,” Pyke said. “This supposed reduction from 52 piles to 18 making no big difference, being more optimized, is ludicrous.”

NC cop accidently shoots teen son in the head

Officials: NC Cop Shot Son in Head in Apparent Accident
The 15-year-old is said to be in critical condition

A North Carolina police department is asking for prayers for the family of one of its own: a Jacksonville police officer who allegedly shot his teen son in the head in what was apparently an accident. Neither the officer nor the 15-year-old have been identified. The incident happened around 4:30pm Monday afternoon. A press release states that the teen "sustained a life-threatening injury from a single gunshot wound to the head." He is currently hospitalized at Vidant Medical Center in Pitt County and is in critical condition. NBC News reports it's not clear if the gun in question was one issued to the officer by his department.

"This is a tragic event and this matter remains under investigation by the Onslow County Sheriff’s Office," said District Attorney Ernie Lee. "The reports, statements, and other evidence from the investigation will be provided to this office to determine what actions, if any, will be taken." The News & Observer reports the Onslow County Sheriff’s Office on Tuesday said "all preliminary indications are that the incident was an accidental shooting." The officer has been placed on administrative leave.

Cops were in pursuit of 13 yr old on dirt bike. He crashed and died

https://www.newser.com/story/314986/family-of-teen-killed-on-dirt-bike-wants-answers-from-fla-cops.html

Authorities in Boynton Beach, Fla., are calling the death of a young Black teen over the weekend "devastating" after the boy crashed into a street sign while riding his dirt bike. But family members of Stanley Davis Jr. are outraged, saying the only reason Stanley is dead is because police were pursuing him in the first place.

Police say the 13-year-old was seen Sunday around 1pm riding "recklessly" on his red-and-white bike, prompting cops to "[attempt] a traffic stop." That's when the Florida Highway Patrol says Stanley apparently lost control of his bike, hit a curb, got thrown from the bike, and smashed into a street sign

ER doctor's observations - differences in patients based on vax status

Twitter thread..

I’ve seen a lot of Covid in the ER recently.

With so many people getting infected recently, some folks may wonder what’s the point of getting vaccinated at all?

And is there really any value to a booster dose if I’ve had two Pfizer/Moderna or a shot of J&J?

My observations: 🧵

============

Most patients I’ve seen that had 2 doses of Pfizer/Moderna still had ‘mild’ symptoms, but more than those who had received a third dose.

More fatigued. More fever. More coughing. A little more miserable overall.

But no shortness of breath. No difficulty breathing.

Mostly fine.

==========
Every patient I’ve seen with Covid that’s had a 3rd ‘booster’ dose has had mild symptoms.

By mild I mean mostly sore throat. Lots of sore throat. Also some fatigue, maybe some muscle pain.

No difficulty breathing. No shortness of breath.

All a little uncomfortable, but fine.

======%

Most patients I’ve seen that had one dose of J&J and had Covid were worse overall. Felt horrible. Fever for a few days (or more).

Weak, tired. Some shortness of breath and cough.

But not one needing hospitalization. Not one needing oxygen.

Not great. But not life-threatening.

====%%%%====

And almost every single patient that I’ve taken care of that needed to be admitted for Covid has been unvaccinated.

Every one with profound shortness of breath. Every one whose oxygen dropped when they walked. Every one needing oxygen to breath regularly.

San Francisco-based DoorDash is requiring engineers to deliver food — and they’re furious

Dec. 27, 2021

DoorDash, Uber Eats and other food delivery apps are seen on an iPhone screen.

DoorDash, the food delivery app based out of San Francisco, is requiring all its nondelivery employees, including CEO Tony Xu, to do a “dash” once a month — and some employees are seemingly furious.

MarketWatch first reported that the WeDash program, which was launched when the service was founded, is making its return in January after being paused during the pandemic. A spokesperson for DoorDash confirmed its return to SFGATE.

But a 1,500-comment thread on Blind, the anonymous social media platform for techies and other white-collar types, was started last week by one disgruntled DoorDash worker.

An engineer with a reported total compensation, or TC, of $400,000 a year griped about the responsibility of having to do a once-a-month delivery. “What the actual f—k?” the engineer wrote on the platform. “I didn’t sign up for this, there was nothing in the offer letter/job description about this.”

Man's Parakeet Breeding Plan Got Way Out of Control, Son brings in more than 800 birds to animal she

PARAKEETS
Man's Parakeet Breeding Plan Got Way Out of Control
Son brings in more than 800 birds to animal shelter in Michigan

A Michigan animal shelter took a call last week from a man asking to bring by about 60 parakeets that belonged to his father. It was an unusually large request, but that wasn't the half of it.

As it turns out, it wasn't even the tenth of it. As the Detroit Free Press reports, when the man arrived on Thursday, he actually had nearly 500 birds—497 to be exact—crammed into seven cages. Incredibly, the man dropped off an additional 339 birds on Sunday, reports the Detroit News. That would be a grand total of 836 birds. It seems his father had begun breeding the parakeets, "and it got out of control," says Kelley LeBonty, director of the Detroit Animal Welfare Group in Macomb County.

“The problem is birds breed easily," says LaBonty. "And then you just have more babies and more babies and more babies if you don’t control the situation." The shelter has been scrambling to provide care—some of the babies require hand-feeding—and other bird rescue organizations have been pitching in.

The plan is to offer the birds for adoption once they're deemed healthy enough in a few weeks. It's possible, however, that some will have to be euthanized. "They were kind of on top of each other and smothering each other," says LeBonty. "They were very, very stressed. They were barely moving." Those interested in donating for the birds' care can contact the shelter.
