Michigan Board Says Abortion Referendum Should Not Go to Voters

Abortion rights supporters gathered more than 750,000 signatures, but the petitions they circulated had formatting problems.

https://www.nytimes.com/2022/08/31/us/michigan-referendum-abortion-ballot.html

https://archive.ph/QjAJ6

A state board in Michigan refused on Wednesday to place an abortion rights referendum on the November ballot because of a dispute over word spacing on the petition, an embarrassing blow to abortion rights supporters who had gathered more than 750,000 signatures.

The decision, which came when the Board of State Canvassers deadlocked along party lines, could still be overturned by the courts. But it injected further uncertainty into the fate of abortion in Michigan, a swing state where enforcement of a pre-Roe v. Wade abortion ban has been temporarily blocked by a judge and where many closely watched races are on this year’s ballot. Tony Daunt, the Republican chair of the canvassing board, said a lack of visible spaces between words on the petitions shown to voters represented “an egregious error.”

Reproductive Freedom for All, a group supporting the amendment, accused the canvassers of disenfranchising voters and vowed to challenge the decision in court. The two Republicans on the board voted against placing the issue on the ballot, while the two Democratic canvassers supported presenting the question to voters.

Abortion rights supporters across the country have turned to referendums as a way to maintain or restore access to the procedure after Roe was overturned in June. Voters in California and Vermont are poised to decide whether to enshrine abortion rights in their state constitutions, while Kentuckians will choose whether to make it clear that there is no state right to an abortion. In Kansas, voters overwhelmingly decided in August to preserve a state-level right to abortion.

Oz campaign again mocks Fetterman's health in Pennsylvania Senate race

https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2022/aug/31/john-fetterman-dr-oz-health-stroke

John Fetterman, the Democratic candidate for US Senate in Pennsylvania, said he would not debate Mehmet Oz next week, after the Republican’s campaign mocked his health again. “Dr Oz’s team … think it is funny to mock a stroke survivor,” Fetterman said. Fetterman suffered a stroke in May and returned to the campaign trail this month. He leads Oz by about nine points in polls.

Oz, a heart surgeon, made his name as a TV doctor (who admitted in Senate testimony to promoting diet pills which “don’t have the scientific muster to present as fact”). His campaign has chosen to question Fetterman’s health. On Tuesday, it invited the Democrat to a debate next week.

The campaign said: “Dr Oz promises not to intentionally hurt John’s feelings at any point. We will allow John to have all of his notes in front of him along with an earpiece so you can have the answers given to him by his staff in real time. “At any point John Fetterman can raise his hand and say bathroom break … We will pay for any additional medical personnel who might need to have on standby.”

Fetterman said: “As I recover from this stroke and improve my auditory processing and speech, I look forward to continuing to meet with the people of Pennsylvania. “Today’s statement from Dr Oz’s team made it abundantly clear that they think it is funny to mock a stroke survivor. My recovery may be a joke to Dr Oz and his team, but it’s real for me.” Fetterman also said he was “proud of my record as mayor [of Braddock] and as lieutenant governor and I’m eager to put my record and my values up against Dr Oz’s any day of the week”.

Everything We Know About Midnights, Taylor Swift's 10th Studio Album

https://www.wmagazine.com/culture/taylor-swifts-midnights-release-date

Taylor Swift has immersed herself in her archives ever since she embarked on a mission to rerecord her first six studio albums. But when accepting the video of the year award at MTV’s VMAs on Sunday, the 32-year-old pop star (who was dripping in jewels courtesy of Oscar de la Renta) revealed that she’s ready to step into the future with her tenth studio album, Midnights. It’s her first new material since 2020’s Evermore, and fans couldn’t be more thrilled to hear how she’s turned “the stories of 13 sleepless nights scattered throughout my life” into music. Find the answers to all your questions about what she has in store for October 21 below.

What has Swift said about Midnights so far?

The pop star gave her followers a sense of what’s to come in a photo of herself sitting in an arm chair and holding a telephone overlaid with text. “This is a collection of music written in the middle of the night a journey through terrors and sweet dreams. The floors we pace are the demons we face. For all of us who have tossed and turned and decided to keep the lanterns lit and go searching—hoping that just maybe, when the clock strikes 12… we’ll meet ourselves,” she wrote. “We lie awake in love and in fear, in turmoil and in tears. We stare at walls and drink until they speak back. We twist in our self-made cages and pray that we aren’t—right at this minute—about to make some fateful life-altering mistake.”

What’s the Midnights aesthetic?

Each TSwift album has its own look and feel, and with her latest, Swift joins Kendall Jenner and Lil Nas X in endorsing blue eye makeup. The cover bears a bit of similarity to that of Swift’s seventh album, Lover (which incidentally was almost titled Daylight).

Is there a track list?

Yep—but the only thing you’ll learn from it is that Swift maintains a strong allegiance to the number 13.

11 Exciting Cookbooks to Look Out for This Fall

Discover recipes for pierogies, Taiwanese cooking, vegan meals, and modern cocktails.

https://www.thrillist.com/eat/nation/most-exciting-new-cookbooks

In the same way that fashion comes alive with the September issue, food starts to get exciting again with the start of the fall cookbook season. It’s a time for reinvention—the leaves change colors, the air gets nippy, and turning on the oven doesn’t mean enduring a mini heat wave. For many of us, getting cozy means spending more time in the kitchen. And for that, we have a roster of titles that will give you fresh ideas, from culinary voices both new and recognizable.

For the chef who cannot wait to get back to Saturdays spent holed up indoors, Zuza Zak’s Pierogi, filled with traditional and modern approaches to Polish dumplings, will inspire just the kind of meditative project you need. Or, if you’re feeling inventive, check out Frankie Gaw’s First Generation, featuring intricate, Taiwanese-American creations, like Cincinnati Chili with Hand-Pulled Noodles. But maybe you’re the kind of chef who craves all things simple. Tabitha Brown’s Cooking from the Spirit offers up no-fuss, nutritious vegan meals, while Nicole Keshishian Modic’s Love to Eat is an approachable guide to intuitive eating. Here’s a full list of the food and drink guides we cannot wait to get acquainted with this fall:

Mezcla: Recipes to Excite by Ixta Belfrage

Release date: September 13

While Mezcla is Belfrage’s first solo cookbook, the talented chef is no stranger to recipe development. She worked with Yotam Ottolenghi for five years, contributing to his columns in The Guardian and The New York Times, before co-authoring his cookbook, Flavor, in 2020. “Mezcla,” which means “mix, blend, or fusion,” characterizes the author’s culinary upbringing, split between Brazil (where her mother is from), Italy (where she lived as a child), and Mexico (where her grandfather lived). Expect bold recipes with unexpected flavor combinations, like Giant Cheese on Toast with Honey and Urfa Butter and Chicken with Pineapple and 'Nduja.

The Vegan Chinese Kitchen by Hannah Che

Release date: September 13

The Vegan Chinese Kitchen explores the tradition of zhai cai, the plant-based Chinese cuisine that emphasizes umami-rich ingredients, tracing back over centuries to Buddhist temple kitchens. Hannah Che, creator of blog “The Plant-Based Wok”, replicates traditional Chinese dishes in a meatless way, like Sweet and Sour Tofu, but also calls attention to naturally plant-based dishes, like pea shoots braised in a velvety mushroom broth made with sesame oil roux.

'Me Time' Might Be Kevin Hart's Worst Movie Yet. And That's Really Saying Something.

The latest Kevin Hart buddy comedy, this time on Netflix, sees him enlist Mark Wahlberg for help with his supposed masculinity problems. To call it a mess is an understatement.

https://www.thedailybeast.com/obsessed/me-time-might-be-kevin-harts-worst-movie-yet-and-thats-really-saying-something

Kevin Hart loves making movies with a partner, be it The Rock, Ice Cube, Will Ferrell, The Rock, Bryan Cranston, Tiffany Haddish, Woody Harrelson or, you know, The Rock. Me Time thus dutifully adheres to the Hart template, pairing him with Mark Wahlberg in yet another effort in which he embodies a neutered, panicky pipsqueak struggling to reclaim his manliness opposite a macho stud. If you’ve endured a Hart film before, you’ve already seen writer/director John Hamburg’s visually drab, comedically challenged Netflix feature (Aug. 26), which only distinguishes itself by being arguably the least funny entry in the star’s entire canon.

Me Time wastes no time situating viewers in hackneyed Hart terrain. In a flashback to 15 years earlier, Sonny (Hart) is attending the over-the-top birthday party of his friend Huck Dembo (Wahlberg), during which they and others are going wingsuit flying. This isn’t as crazy as the fact that Sonny’s best friend is named “Huck Dembo,” which sounds less like a person than something you’d spend hours searching for at Home Depot. Nonetheless, it suitably freaks out Sonny, whose trepidation turns to terror when he’s accidentally blown off a cliff, thereby compelling Huck to save him and, in the process, confirm that he’s always there for his best bud. In this moment of brotherly bonding, Sonny promises to attend all of Huck’s subsequent birthday bashes.

Fast forward to the present, and Sonny is the sort of lame-o that is Hart’s specialty. Living in Sherman Oaks, California, with his wife Maya (Regina Hall) and his kids Dash (Che Tafari) and Ava (Amentii Sledge), Sonny is the epitome of emasculation: he’s a stay-at-home dad who supports his clan while architect Maya functions as the breadwinner; he’s the PTA president who’s overseeing the middle school talent show; he drives an old minivan that doesn’t have automatic doors; he pratfalls around the kitchen like a clown; he’s out of his element at Maya’s gala work events, where he’s also threatened by his spouse’s hunky and successful client Armando (Luis Gerardo Méndez); and, rather than spending spring break with Huck, who’s hosting a blowout get-together for his 44th birthday, he’s going on a trip with his family to visit his in-laws. He’s a suburban domesticated dork and for that is mocked and humiliated by just about everyone he meets—no matter the backhanded praise he receives for being so good at his duties.

Following a series of scenarios that establish Sonny as a figurative eunuch with a giant Napoleon complex, Me Time provides him with a shot at redemptive transformation when Maya, realizing that her career has prevented her from getting to know her kids, decides to take Dash and Ava by herself to her parents’ house, thereby giving Sonny a week of “me time.” This, of course, simply leads to more embarrassment and failure for Sonny, who can’t masturbate to ’90s porn without being interrupted, vomits up all the BBQ he’s been craving, and is roundly defeated at golf by a trio of elderly Asian women. Rather than throw in the towel, though, Sonny decides to join Huck for his party. At their first reunion, Huck appears buck naked, thereby underlining his own manliness in relation to Sonny’s wimpiness. Once out in the California desert for what amounts to Huck’s personal Burning Man shindig, Sonny suffers similar mortifications, from being chased off a portable toilet by a female mountain lion (because, you see, women are tougher than him), to being held up by his fellow revelers for a group photo like an awkward child.

RA.847 Bella Boo............... The sound of Sweden in summertime.

https://soundcloud.com/resident-advisor/ra847-bella-boo

https://ra.co/podcast/847

As anyone who's been to a Nordic country in the summer will tell you, there's a certain magic in the temperate air that you only get from a place that is cold and dark for most of the rest of the year. That probably goes some way towards explaining how a country like Sweden produces some of the sunniest music around, whether we're talking about pop or underground dance. Since she debuted on Stockholm label Studio Barnhus in 2018, Bella Boo has been at the forefront of this sound, making clever, fun and joyous house music on records like Once Upon A Passion, where pop instincts embed into deep house grooves.

Bella Boo's RA Podcast both highlights her distinct personality and also the sound of Stockholm in full summer bloom, featuring local producers like Kornél Kovács, Axel Boman, Genius Of Time and Samo DJ. It's full of catchy basslines, hooky vocal snippets, luxurious melodies and plenty of brilliant transitions. It's kind of like listening to one of her records: a restless and kaleidoscopic approach to house, where the rhythms shift and a new earworm is always around the corner. Bella Boo has all the makings of a star, and this mix feels like another step in her impressive rise.

What have you been up to recently?

DJing, summer vacation and experimenting with my sound in the studio. Making lots of music that will never see the light of the day trying to push myself forward.

What are you grateful for these days?

Friends and family, the love and support through highs and lows. My daughter, my light and my everything.

How and where was the mix recorded, and can you tell us the idea behind the mix?

It was recorded at Trädgården a sunny morning in August. This is my favorite place to DJ in Stockholm. Sound is great, crowd is great and I love the 360 degree DJ booth in the middle of inside and outdoors. Placed in the middle of the crowd it gives the right energy to DJ. I wanted to include as many artists from the Stockholm scene as possible in the mix, since they all have had such great impact on me. The pioneers Jesper Dahlbäck and Cari Lekebusch from legendary SVEK really set the standards and the music is timeless, banging. The boys from Studio Barnhus of course, the playfulness inspires me so much—fun but never ironic—and their support means everything. Of course when speaking about the Stockholm scene you have to mention Samo DJ, your favourite DJ's favourite DJ. So yeah, recorded in Stockholm showing my love for our local scene mixing it up with tracks I keep returning to and of course some new tracks from producers that amaze me. I wanted the mix to be like a big slow rolling wave, taking you up to where it breaks and then sucks you back to peace.

The Liberal Patriot: Bernie Sanders was (Mostly) Right

2-4 years of post-secondary technical training, apprenticeships, and traditional college should be a public good available to all who are interested and qualify—funded by state and federal taxes.

https://theliberalpatriot.substack.com/p/bernie-sanders-was-mostly-right

University of California, Riverside is the top ranked university in the country for social mobility. A true public good.

By John Halpin, The Center for American Progress - Senior Fellow; Co-Director, Politics and Elections

President Biden’s decision to forgive up to $20,000 in federal student loans has produced cries of joy and support in many quarters and frustration and anger in others. Setting aside the expected partisan positions on the issue, is the plan a good idea on balance? Yes. No. Maybe. Too early to tell. Who knows? It’s hard to evaluate at this point separate from personal or political reactions.

If implemented, Biden’s debt forgiveness plan will undoubtedly be a huge relief to millions of people. At the same time, as numerous critics have stated, the plan seems a bit half-baked and prone to all sorts of unintended economic consequences, legal challenges, and perceptions of the government favoring the privileged. President Biden himself shared many of these concerns before shifting his position.

Two specific criticisms of the plan are worth taking seriously: (1) Debt forgiveness does little to nothing for most current and all future students in terms of addressing the absurd costs of college; and (2) It’s manifestly unfair for the federal government to dedicate substantial public resources to reduce debts for one class of Americans but not another based solely on their education choices.

A suitable response to these shortcomings will not be found in either doing nothing about the matter or in creating a new status quo of debt forgiveness, more indebtedness, and more debt forgiveness—the expressed or implicit positions of the two major parties. Instead, perhaps the best solution to the higher education affordability crisis lies in the most social democratic approach on offer: America should treat post-secondary education—including both traditional 4-year college and other technical and apprenticeship programs—as a public good that is open to everyone but not required and paid for by all Americans through taxes.

The Best Pumpkin Beers to Drink This Fall

Sip on nitro ales, barrel-aged beers, and spiced stouts.

https://www.thrillist.com/drink/nation/best-pumpkin-beers

There are so many pumpkin beers on the shelves these days that it’s difficult to figure out what’s a trick and what’s a treat. We’ve done the tough work of drinking the best pumpkin beers in America to ensure your next six-pack is full of sugar, (pumpkin) spice, and everything nice. This fall, skip the pumpkin spice lattes and slices of pumpkin pie and opt for one of these stouts or ales instead.

Elysian Night Owl

6.7% ABV

Seattle, Washington

When it comes to pumpkin beer season, Elysian arguably takes it the most seriously nationwide. The brewery hosts the Annual Great Pumpkin Beer Festival pouring 80-plus pumpkin beers from around the country. The PNW spot also taps a “several-hundred-pound” pumpkin that’s been conditioning a beer of its namesake during the celebrated gathering. Elysian is releasing a trio of pumpkin beers—The Punkuccino, The Great Pumpkin, and Night Owl. The latter is brewed with roasted and raw pumpkin seeds, plus a nice dose of cloves, ginger, allspice, nutmeg, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Be as wise as the mascot and pick one up this season.

Two Roads Roadsmary’s Baby

ABV 6.8%

Stratford, Connecticut

Surely the finest beer ever named after a movie in which (spoiler alert) a woman gives birth to the Devil’s offspring, Roadsmary’s Baby is a devilishly delicious take on a barrel-aged pumpkin beer. Two Roads takes the rum barrel-aged mantle and runs (rums?) with it, offering up a beautiful, deep copper-colored ale with an intoxicating pumpkin spice blend on the nose. Your tastebuds will dive into pools of vanilla and oak imparted from the rum barrel. And unlike most barrel-aged brews with super high ABVs, this brew will give you all those flavors you know and love from the cellaring process without making you want to take a nap immediately after drinking it.

Tröegs Independent Brewing Master of Pumpkins

7.5% ABV

Hershey, Pennsylvania

Tröegs knows how to embrace its environs while making a truly seasonal beer by using 3,000 pounds of Pennsylvania longneck pumpkins grown by neighbor Strites Orchard for their revered Master of Pumpkins ale. From de-stemming the longnecks, to roasting them in the kitchen, and then finally adding them to the mash, the dedication to making this highly anticipated fan favorite deserves some love! The subtle notes of nutmeg, cinnamon, ginger, vanilla bean, and caramel pouring with a hue of walnut brown justify the wait for 2021’s batch.

Heavy Seas Great’er Pumpkin

ABV 10%

Halethorpe, Maryland

This brewery outside of Baltimore has gone through a few recent facelifts—both in its taproom and on its packaging—but a mainstay is its bold, barrel-aged pumpkin ale. Brewers used real pumpkin for the recipe and also age the beer in bourbon barrels, giving it slight notes of oak and vanilla, on top of cinnamon, ginger, and clove flavors. This is one your nose will notice as soon as the bottle opener flips off the cap.
