U.S. and NATO Scramble to Arm Ukraine and Refill Their Own Arsenals

The West thought an artillery and tank war in Europe would never happen again and shrunk weapons stockpiles. It was wrong.

Now, nine months into the war, the West’s fundamental unpreparedness has set off a mad scramble to supply Ukraine with what it needs while also replenishing NATO stockpiles. As both sides burn through weaponry and ammunition at a pace not seen since World War II, the competition to keep arsenals flush has become a critical front that could prove decisive to Ukraine’s effort.

The amount of artillery being used is staggering, NATO officials say. In Afghanistan, NATO forces might have fired even 300 artillery rounds a day and had no real worries about air defense. But Ukraine can fire thousands of rounds daily and remains desperate for air defense against Russian missiles and Iranian-made drones.

Last summer in the Donbas region, the Ukrainians were firing 6,000 to 7,000 artillery rounds each day, a senior NATO official said. The Russians were firing 40,000 to 50,000 rounds per day.

By comparison, the United States produces only 15,000 rounds each month.

So the West is scrambling to find increasingly scarce Soviet-era equipment and ammunition that Ukraine can use now, including S-300 air defense missiles, T-72 tanks and especially Soviet-caliber artillery shells.

Moscow Will Continue Bombing Ukraine - Russian UN Envoy

Vasily Nebenzya, Russian Permanent Representative to the United Nations, has said that Russia aims to impair Ukraine’s military potential in order to force it to negotiate on what he describes as more realistic terms.

Speaking at the latest UN Security Council meeting on Wednesday, Nov. 22, 2022, summoned due to Russia’s massive strikes of Ukraine’s infrastructure including critical energy facilities, he openly admitted why Russia is bombing Ukraine.

“One of the goals of the special military operation is to undermine the Ukrainian army’s combat capabilities. And it will be attained by military means until the Kyiv regime takes a realistic position, which will make it possible to discuss and try to settle those problems, which have prompted us to launch the special military operation,” he said.

Claiming that Western military aid is flooding the country, and describing the calls for Kyiv to defeat Russia as reckless, Nebenzya emphasized that Russian forces are deliberately bombing Ukraine’s infrastructure facilities.

Russia's Wagner Group sends bloodied sledgehammer to EU

Russia's Wagner Group mercenaries have sent a "bloodied" sledgehammer in a violin case to the European Parliament after members started proceedings to label them as terrorists.

Sledgehammers have become an unofficial symbol of the Kremlin-linked group because its fighters have used them to kill during overseas missions.

In a video posted on one of its Telegram channels, a suited lawyer working for Wagner Group carries a violin case into a bare room and places it on a table.

He lifts the lid of the violin case, showing off a highly polished sledgehammer. The head has been engraved with Wagner's logo and the handle has been dabbed with red paint to depict blood.

Trump Will Beat DeSantis By A Wide Margin In 2024, New Poll Shows

Former President Donald Trump will likely win against Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis by a wide margin in a hypothetical 2024 election for the Republican nomination, according to a new poll.

In a recent Emerson College poll, Trump received 55% support from Republican registered voters who participated in the survey. In comparison, only 25% said they favored DeSantis as the GOP's presidential nominee in a hypothetical 2024 election.

No other candidate for the Republican nomination reached double-digit support.

Trump and DeSantis were matched up against other potential Republican presidential candidates, including former Vice President Mike Pence, Texas Sen. Ted Cruz, former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley, Missouri Sen. Josh Hawley, Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan and Wyoming Rep. Liz Cheney.

The spin that Trump is washed up would seem to be a little premature. Trump is beating DeSantis 2:1. Add in Trumper fanaticism, and Trump has quite an effective lead at this stage of the contest before DeSantis declares.

Elon Musk's Twitter Restores Marjorie Taylor Greene's Personal Account

The personal Twitter account of extremist Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) was reinstated on Monday, nearly a year after it was “permanently suspended” for violating the social media platform’s policies on COVID-19 misinformation.

The far-right lawmaker’s account was reactivated days after the new owner and CEO of Twitter, Elon Musk, restored the accounts of other controversial figures including former President Donald Trump.

Greene was booted from the website in early January after her fifth suspension, which triggered her permanent removal in line with Twitter’s COVID-19 misinformation policy at the time.

China's strict zero-COVID policy spurs huge spike of people seeking to leave

BEIJING - Following last month's re-election of Xi Jinping as the leader of the Communist Party of China, online searches for ways to leave China exploded. On WeChat alone, more than 60 million people searched for information about leaving the country. A week later, with COVID-19 cases nationwide on the rise, the number rose to 80 million in one day.

China's zero-COVID policy is believed to be Jinping's brainchild. To make matters worse, the man responsible for the disastrous handling of the Shanghai lockdown earlier this year, Li Qiang, was appointed to be the next premier of China. However, criticism of the country's zero-COVID policy continues to swell.

"I’ve never been very interested in politics, but since the beginning of the pandemic, so many outrageous things have happened. The COVID insanity is everywhere. I feel my eyes have been opened, and I can't take it anymore," said Wang, a woman from Shanghai.

Online, people have continued to show their anger, demanding that state-controlled media report the truth about how the lockdown policy has torn people’s lives apart. In addition, several cities have issued apologies for their handling of city lockdowns or have promised to take better care of residents going forward.

Airlines Push for Lone Pilot Flights to Cut Costs Despite Safety Fears

(Bloomberg) -- Airlines and regulators are pushing to have just one pilot in the cockpit of passenger jets instead of two. It would lower costs and ease pressure from crew shortages, but placing such responsibility on a single person at the controls is unsettling for some.

Over 40 countries including Germany, the UK and New Zealand have asked the United Nations body that sets aviation standards to help make single-pilot flights a safe reality. The European Union Aviation Safety Agency has also been working with planemakers to determine how solo flights would operate and preparing rules to oversee them. EASA said such services could start in 2027.

The plan doesn’t sit well with pilots. It’s a hard sell for passengers, too.

Tony Lucas, an Airbus SE A330 captain for Qantas Airways Ltd. and president of the Australian & International Pilots Association, is concerned that a lone pilot might be overwhelmed by an emergency before anyone else has time to reach the cockpit to help.

How many Republicans would stay at home in 2024 - 10%, 20%, more? What is DeSantis' path to victory?
