While pharma has raced to develop COVID-19 vaccines, US-based company NeuroRx is taking a different approach to treating the virus. CEO Dr. Jonathan Javitt tells pharmaphorum about the science behind the company’s Zyesami, which targets the alveolar type II cells in the lung that are critical for transmission of oxygen.
Zyesami was developed in conjunction with partner Relief Therapeutics, and NeuroRx is currently awaiting results from a Phase 2b/3 trial (COVID-AIV) evaluating the therapeutic for the treatment of respiratory failure in COVID-19 patients.
Based on years of research by Professor Sami Said at New York’s Stony Brook University, the drug is a synthetic formulation of Vasoactive Intestinal Peptide (VIP), a naturally occurring peptide that is highly concentrated in the lungs. VIP is known to have potent anti-inflammatory effects and can inhibit coronavirus replication and block the formation of inflammatory cytokines.

Class action lawsuit filed in US claims the houses have colluded with the online giant to keep prices artificially high
Amazon.com and the “Big Five” publishers – Penguin Random House, Hachette, HarperCollins, Macmillan and Simon & Schuster – have been accused of colluding to fix ebook prices, in a class action filed by the law firm that successfully sued Apple and the Big Five on the same charge 10 years ago.
The lawsuit, filed in district court in New York on Thursday by Seattle firm Hagens Berman, on behalf of consumers in several US states, names the retail giant as the sole defendant but labels the publishers “co-conspirators”. It alleges Amazon and the publishers use a clause known as “Most Favored Nations” (MFN) to keep ebook prices artificially high, by agreeing to price restraints that force consumers to pay more for ebooks purchased on retail platforms that are not Amazon.com.

He was accused of kicking in the front door of his home in Cordova, chasing his wife Kathryn Bledsoe, picking her up by her throat, and slamming her onto the floor. He was 36 years old at the time. The so-called QAnon Shaman who stormed the U.S. Capitol last week in Viking garb before sitting in Vice President Mike Pence’s chair on the Senate dais admitted to federal agents he intended to return to D.C. to “protest” President-elect Joe Biden’s inauguration.
“I’ll still go, you better believe it,” Jacob Chansley bragged in an interview with FBI agents the day after the violent insurrection. “For sure I’d want to be there, as a protestor, as a protestor, fuckin’ a.”

Queens man who allegedly had aspirations of joining the far-right group the Proud Boys was charged with a weapons offense Wednesday after his Tuesday arrest by the FBI turned up a stockpile of ammunition and deadly weapons.

He admitted to police that he was the operator of the account and owner of the ammunition.
Florea was charged with being a felon in possession of illegal ammunition, as he had previously been convicted of a firearms-related felony in New York state, according to the complaint. He could face up to a decade in prison if convicted. Assistant U.S. Attorney Francisco J. Navarro said during the bail hearing that Florea “is particularly dangerous in the current political environment” and posed a flight risk, according to the Associated Press.

Jake Angeli, whose legal name is Jacob Anthony Chansley, was taken into custody Saturday in Arizona. An indictment unsealed Tuesday in Washington charged the 33-year-old with civil disorder, obstruction of an official proceeding, disorderly conduct in a restricted building, and demonstrating in a Capitol building. It’s unclear whether the new charges are felonies or misdemeanors. Chansley was previously charged with two misdemeanors stemming from the violent riot — entering a restricted building without lawful authority and violent entry and disorderly conduct on Capitol grounds.

Angeli "accepted President Trump's invitation to walk down Pennsylvania Avenue to the Capitol," Watkins said in a statement. “Mr. Chansley is an American; he served honorably in the U.S. military. He has zero criminal history. He is a lover of nature, routinely practices meditation, is an active practicer of yoga and eats only organic food. He took seriously the countless messages of President Trump. He believed in President Trump. The infamous, bare-chested “QAnon shaman” who stormed the US Capitol in a horned headdress and star-spangled face paint was reportedly booted from the Navy for refusing to take an anthrax vaccine.
Jake Angeli, 33, who complained that jail staff won’t feed him organic food, enlisted in the Navy as a supply clerk in September 2005 before getting assigned to the USS Kitty Hawk the following March, Task and Purpose reported.
After about two years as a serviceman, the Arizona native was discharged when he refused to take the anthrax vaccine in October 2007, the outlet reported, citing a Navy official.
The characterization of Angeli’s discharge wasn’t released because of privacy concerns, the outlet said.

Arkansas & Mississippi are sending National Guardsmen to Biden inauguration
The guardsmen are part of a broad contingent of National Guard soldiers from various states that will attend the ceremony.

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — The Arkansas National Guard is sending 500 soldiers and airmen to Washington to assist with security for President-elect Joe Biden's inauguration. The guard on Thursday said Gov. Asa Hutchinson approved the mission.
The deployment begins on January 17 and the guardsmen are set to return to Arkansas before the end of the month.
The Mississippi National Guard is also sending troops to Washington D. C. for the presidential inauguration. Republican Gov. Tate Reeves' press secretary, Bailey Martin, said the governor told the Mississippi National Guard to send troops if necessary "even before the riots at the Capitol last week."
