The military is already investigating the role service members played in the Capitol insurrection. Now, neo-Nazis are trying to recruit them.

While watching news of the violent insurrection on TV last week, retired General Vincent K. Brooks, a four-star general and former head of U.S. forces in Korea, was struck by the apparent number of veterans he witnessed storm the Capitol in real time. “All of those things were evident in that crowd,” he told VICE News, noting the military badges and symbols he saw attached to the jackets, shirts and hats of the Trump supporters, especially when coupled with military grade tactical equipment. “It was disconcerting.”

“So many of these people that we saw were apparently former military who have taken a very extreme view of the security of the United States and the political dynamics that are impacting it,” he said. “Far too many of them were veterans. And that was so disappointing.”

As the FBI warns of armed groups threatening state capitals across the country and the National Guard is deploying to Washington D.C. in preparation for the inauguration of President-elect Joe Biden, accelerationist neo-Nazis who supported last week’s President Donald Trump-incited insurrection are calling for targeted killings and advocating for members of the military—charged with protecting one of the most fundamental events in American democracy—to turn to their side.

Capitol insurrection last Wednesday is in custody.

Robert Keith Packer, 56, was arrested on Wednesday morning by U.S. Marshals based in Norfolk.

Federal charging documents in the case are sealed, and so far the FBI and Capitol police have not shared what charges he faces, though he was photographed inside the Capitol during the insurrection and had a warrant for his arrest out of the District of Columbia.

He was booked Western Tidewater Regional Jail and is expected to make his first court appearance on Wednesday at 12:30 p.m. in Norfolk.

Chicago Public Schools returned to in-person learning Tuesday despite pushback.

Chicago Public Schools has threatened to dock the pay of teachers who do not report to class as the school district returns to in-person learning amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

The school district reopened Monday for the first time since closing at the start of the pandemic in the spring of 2020, despite pushback from the Chicago Teachers Union, which claims that proper protocols are not in place to keep teachers and students safe from the virus.

At least 145 CPS teachers were absent Tuesday without official leave, ABC Chicago station WLS reported. About 6,000 students returned on Monday, but another 71,000 students are expected to return on Feb. 1.

Operation Warp Speed Chief Adviser Dr. Moncef Slaoui has submitted his resignation at the request of the incoming Biden team, under a plan that would see him stay in the role for a month to help with the transition, according to two people familiar with the situation.

Slaoui’s role leading vaccine development for the unprecedented government effort is expected to be diminished after Jan. 20, said the people, who declined to be named because the plan isn’t yet public. It would end by Feb. 12.

It’s not clear who will take scientific lead for the Biden team focused on Covid vaccines after that, or if someone will be appointed into that role. There are already two vaccines authorized in the U.S., with three more in late-stage clinical trials. Jeff Zients is Biden’s coordinator of the Covid-19 response, while Bechara Choucair will be Covid-19 vaccine coordinator, focused on speeding vaccine delivery.

OLIVE BRANCH, Miss. – Signs posted along an Olive Branch road have a lot of people talking.

Multiple people reached out to WREG-TV concerned with the message written on the signs placed on private property. People told us they were concerned the signs were intimidating with racial connotations.

But the man who put up the signs says that couldn’t be further from the truth.

The signs that were once along a fence in Olive Branch have been taken down. Mark Strauss, the man who owns the fence, says he decided to take them down because he didn’t want to have any issues with the city or his neighbors.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The principal at Cordova High School is on paid administrative leave after comments he reportedly made over SCS’s virtual learning platform [AND TRUMP].

During Principal Barton Thorne’s remarks, a little more than nine minutes long, he commented on freedom of speech zeroing in on social media platforms who have blocked President Trump.

“The principal at Cordova High School has been placed on paid administrative leave, pending the outcome of the review of the comments that were made,” Jerrica Phillips said.

While Shelby County Schools would not discuss specific remarks reportedly made Monday by Cordova High School Principal Barton Thorne during a homeroom video. The audio of Thorne’s remarks, which lasts a little more than nine minutes long, was obtained by WREG-TV.

The Arizona man who wore a horned, fur-covered headdress and face paint as he and other supporters of President Trump stormed the U.S. Capitol is a Navy veteran, according to the service.

Jacob Anthony Chansley, who also goes by Jake Angeli and is known among online conspiracy theorists and far-right internet groups as the “QAnon Shaman,” served in the Navy for two years, from September 2005 to October 2007, his service records show.

Finding out how many, and what to do about them, is easier said than done.

The U.S. Marshal's Office said it will be complying with the strict organic diet of the Capitol attack suspect known as the "QAnon Shaman" following reports he has not eaten since he was placed in custody.

During his first appearance at a federal courtroom in Phoenix, Angeli's public defender Gerald Williams told the judge that he had not eaten since he was taken into custody because he is on an extremely restrictive diet consisting solely of organic food, believed to be for religious reasons.

Judge Deborah Fine said the claims were "deeply concerning" and ordered Williams to find a way to accommodate the 33-year-old's demands.
