Cordova High principal placed on administrative leave after making controversial [Trump] comments

Note: Cordova is a suburb of Memphis, part of Shelby County Schools, which remains fully virtual, thanks to outstanding Dem leadership.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) - A Shelby County Schools principal is on administrative leave because of controversial comments made during morning announcements.

The district confirms Cordova High Principal Barton Thorne is on paid leave while his comments are under review.

In a recording obtained by WMC Action News 5, Thorne speaks to students and staff about freedom of speech after major social media platforms removed or blocked posts from President Donald Trump.

Thorne drew comparisons to the Branch Davidian standoff in Waco, Texas as an example of a group being singled out for their beliefs.

NBC: Pro-Trump Capitol rioters like the 'QAnon Shaman' looked ridiculous -- by design

When we interpret the T-shirts and symbols, especially given the history of groups like the Ku Klux Klan, the Capitol insurrectionists look a lot more menacing.

The fact that many of the outfits from the Capitol look comical is, historically, not a coincidence.

When the Ku Klux Klan started in the mid-1860s, Klansmen did not wear the white hoods and robes we imagine them in now. They had no uniform. As historian Elaine Frantz explains in her essay "Midnight Rangers: Costume and Performance in the Reconstruction-Era Ku Klux Klan," the early Klansmen wore something far more similar to the hodgepodge we saw on display at the Capitol last week: animal horns, fur, fake beards, homemade costumes that drew on traditions of carnival or Mardi Gras, masks, pointy hats, polka dots. For Frantz, who also wrote a book about the birth of the KKK, the parallels between the appearance of 19th century Klansmen and the Jan. 6 rioters were impossible to ignore.

"When I looked at this weirdo who was dressed as a Viking, I was like, 'Does he know what he's doing?'" Frantz tells NBC THINK about Angeli. "Is he aware of this tradition, or is it a coincidence? Or is it not just a coincidence and he's not aware, but it's something which travels through our culture in the background? Maybe he doesn't even know what he's doing, but he's doing exactly what he would have done in the 19th century."

Like street gangs with their symbolism, in-group / out-group focus & radical agenda!

I am still gob smacked by these costumes and the fact that a prevailing theme was to take pictures / selfies & publicly brag about their illegal actions.

Someone must have assured them they would "win" and that they would not be prosecuted.

Some national veterans organizations vow to remove members charged in the Capitol riots

(CNN)Some national veterans organizations have vowed to remove members who were charged in the Capitol riots, taking a stand against the violent attack last week.

Current and former US military members participated in the insurrection, according to news reports and court records.
A handful of veterans organizations told CNN they are actively checking their membership lists for veterans who have come up in the news. Organizations like the Disabled American Veterans (DAV) and AMVETS said they also plan to revoke memberships of those found guilty of illegal acts or violence.

"We believe that our members have a very sacred right to protest," Dan Clare, a spokesman for DAV, told CNN. "They fought and sacrificed to protect that freedom, but when protesters cross the line and commit illegal acts, especially in the nation's capitol, we found it to be abhorrent."

Off-duty Virginia police officers arrested for their roles in the U.S. Capitol riot

Off-duty Virginia police officers arrested for their roles in the U.S. Capitol riot

Jacob Fracker and Thomas Robertson, two off-duty police officers with the city of Rocky Mount, Virginia, are pictured inside the U.S. Capitol during the deadly Jan. 6 riot, in this photo released by the U.S. Department of Justice.
Two Virginia police officers, including one who bragged on social media that he didn’t do anything illegal by storming the U.S. Capitol, now face charges from the Department of Justice for their roles in the riot.

Jacob Fracker and Thomas Robertson, who work for the Rocky Mount Police Department, were arrested Wednesday, the Justice Department stated. Both were charged with violent entry and disorderly conduct on Capitol grounds and knowingly entering or remaining in any restricted building or grounds without lawful authority.

The two men, who were both off-duty at the time, were photographed inside the Capitol in front of a statue of John Stark, a major general in the Continental Army during the American Revolution. At least one of the men made an obscene gesture in the photo, which was included in the DOJ’s statement of facts. The men then posted about the riot on social media, the federal agency said.

Robertson, in a statement to Newsweek, admitted he and Fracker sent the photo to their colleagues and that he posted on his own Facebook after it leaked to social media, Vincent Veloz, a special agent with the U.S. Capitol Police Office wrote in a statement with the arrest warrant.

Real Estate Brokerage Cushman Cuts Ties With Trump Organization

The real estate brokerage Cushman & Wakefield will no longer work with the Trump Organization, the latest company to distance itself from the president after the riot at the U.S. Capitol.

Chicago-based Cushman has worked with the Trump Organization for years, handling leasing at properties including 40 Wall Street.

“Cushman & Wakefield has made the decision to no longer do business with the Trump Organization,” a company spokesman said in a statement.

Cushman’s decision comes after the real estate firm JLL, hired in 2019 to market Trump Hotel in Washington, said its listing agreement for the property had expired and that it was “no longer doing business” with Trump Organization.

'It hasn't been a good deployment' Mom describes her National Guard son's experience protecting DC

WASHINGTON, D.C., USA — Among the men and women now serving on the front lines to protect the Nation's Capital is a Maryland National Guard member who saw combat in Afghanistan.

He also works as a police officer and has a wife and young son waiting for him to come home.

Years after fighting in the Middle East, his current deployment has him stationed at the US Capitol.

"I just got off the phone with him and he said some of the young men that he’s with don’t have enough money to buy some extra gear they might have so they’re wearing three pairs of extra socks to keep their feet warm," his mother said on Wednesday. "He went online today to order some more gear from Amazon that he’s going to have delivered to my nephew who lives in DC and then my nephew is going to walk over some of the stuff.”
