Why Is the 1971 Oldsmobile 442 So Sought After by Collectors?
https://www.motorbiscuit.com/why-is-the-1971-oldsmobile-442-so-sought-after-by-collectors/Prior to 1968 and after 1971, the 442 badge was merely the moniker for an Oldsmobile Cutlass performance configuration option consisting of a four-barrel carburetor, a four-speed manual transmission, and factory dual exhaust.
By 1971 General Motors was determined to reduce vehicle emissions and produce cars that could run on regular-grade gasoline instead of premium fuels. For the most part this industry-wide change meant the end of the muscle car era as it was known.
The Oldsmobile 442
Introduced as a stand-alone model for the first time in 1968, the Oldsmobile 442 was equipped with a 400-cubic-inch V8 backed by a manual transmission that produced 350 hp. There was also an option for a W-30 engine upgrade that added cold-air-induction and a higher performance camshaft. The W-30 package raised the horsepower of stick shift equipped 442’s to 360 hp. Performance-minded buyers preferred the manual transmission because in 1968 the 400-cubic-inch engine with an automatic transmission was configured to produce 325 hp.
Car Life Magazine hosted a real-world test between an automatic 1968 Oldsmobile 442 and its performance enhanced stablemate sporting a manual transmission and W-30 upgrades, according to Motor 1. The W-30 equipped 442 covered a quarter-mile drag strip 1.83 seconds quicker and crossed the finish line going 11.1 mph faster.
In what would be essentially a last gasp of the performance muscle car era, Oldsmobile produced its last 442 in 1971, according to records.

1971 Oldsmobile 442s sporting the W-30 package with asking prices in the $119,500 to $159,995 range, according to Autotrader.
In 2016, Barrett Jackson sold a four-speed-manual-transmission-equipped, ebony black, convertible at auction in Scottsdale, Arizona for $185,000.
There were 1,304 convertible 442s produced in 1971, and having the original engine along with period-correct transmission and drivetrain propelled the bidding.

On April 3, 1968, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. rose to speak in support of striking sanitation workers in Memphis, Tennessee. "I want you to know tonight, that we, as a people, will get to the Promised Land," King announced. "And I'm happy, tonight. I'm not worried about anything. I'm not fearing any man." And then he closed in his lyrical voice: "Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord."
The next day he lay dying on the second floor of the Lorraine Motel, struck in the cheek by an assassin's bullet.

In April 1968, King quoted the "Battle Hymn," and seemed to know that his life was almost over. Two months later, on June 8, the Requiem Mass for Bobby Kennedy ended with the same song, performed by Andy Williams.
The "Battle Hymn" is the closer: it's the music that concludes great American lives.
The song is bound up with the triptych of assassinations in the 1960s:
John F. Kennedy, Martin Luther King, and Bobby Kennedy.
After JFK died in 1963, Judy Garland sang the "Battle Hymn" on her CBS show as a tribute to her personal friend.
The last line that King ever spoke in public came from a song, "The Battle Hymn of the Republic," written by Julia Ward Howe in 1861. It was a fitting finale to the life of a great American because the story of the "Battle Hymn" is the story of the United States. The song, now approaching its 150th anniversary, is a hallowed treasure and a second national anthem. We have turned to it repeatedly in national crises.
The "Battle Hymn" has inspired suffragists and labor organizers, civil rights leaders and novelists—like John Steinbeck in The Grapes of Wrath.
But most of all, the "Battle Hymn" is a warrior's cry and a call to arms. Its vivid portrait of sacred violence captures how Americans fight wars, from the minié balls of the Civil War to the shock and awe of Iraq.

MEAD, Neb. (WOWT) - An ethanol plant in Mead was ordered last Thursday to immediately stop the discharge of wastewater from the plant, amid environmental concerns. Less than a week later, the plant shut down completely, per state orders.
The owner of the facility, AltEn, LLC “Is likely to cause and may have already caused pollution to the air, waters, and land of the state”, according to the order from the Department of Environment and Energy.
One of the biggest concerns at the plant is the distiller’s grains from corn seed fermentation which have insecticides.

The pesticide levels found in the lagoon wastewater testing from April 8, 2019, and Nov. 12, 2019, far exceeded the registered application rates for the EPA, according to the order.
The plant was notified last October that they were not in compliance and a site visit on Feb. 1, 2021, found that wastewater lagoon levels were beyond their limits, and liners in the wastewater lagoons were damaged.
It’s a small win for Jody Weible, who has been fighting for an investigation at the plant for years.
“It’s a victory but I’m afraid to get my hopes up because I’ve dealt with them for so many years. So I think they’ll come up with a new angle. That’s my fear,” she said.
Weible lives about a mile from the plant and says it smells like she lives next door, describing the odor from the seed corn as “a cross between something dead,

The eye-popping figure pales in comparison to the astronomical $1 trillion in coal investments held by 4,488 institutional investors as of January this year, a report by more than 25 green groups led by German non-profit Urgewald, reveals.
US asset managers BlackRock and Vanguard, the world’s No.1 and No. 2 investment firms respectively, hold $86 billion and $84 billion worth of coal assets each.
“While many large EU investors have begun screening coal companies out of their portfolios, the vast majority of US investors have refused to adopt coal exit policies,” Katrin Ganswindt, head of financial research at Urgewald, said in a statement.

Japanese lead commercial banks
The study identified 381 commercial banks providing $315 billion in loans to the coal industry over the past two years.
The top three lenders from the group were Japan’s Mizuho ($22bn), Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation ($21bn) and Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group ($18bn). The fourth and fifth major coal lenders were US-based Citigroup (US$ 13.5bn) and England’s Barclays ($13.4bn).
The report also found that, over the last two years, 427 commercial banks channeled over $808bn to companies on the GCL through underwriting.
The world’s top five underwriters were all Chinese financial institutions, including the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China ($37bn), the China International Trust and Investment Corporation (US$ 32bn), the Shanghai Pudong Development Bank ($28bn), the Bank of China ($24bn) and the China Everbright Group ($23.7bn).
