Poll: Trump is bleeding support from group he thought he had sewn up

By Matt Arco | NJ Advance Media for NJ.com

Kamala Harris at the top of the Democratic ticket may have “reset the Latino vote” this election against Donald Trump, according to a new poll.

The Equis Research survey shows Harris 19 percentage points ahead among Latino voters in the seven swing states expected to determine the 2024 election, compared to Biden’s five percentage point advantage.

Harris led Trump 56% to 37% among registered Hispanic voters in the seven most competitive states of Arizona, Georgia, North Carolina, Nevada, Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin.

As the nation’s largest minority group — 19.5% of the total population, according to the 2020 census — Latinos form a key voting bloc in what’s shaping up to be a tight presidential election. Harris, the daughter of immigrants, has won the backing of influential Latino groups, and some feel her success hinges on energizing young Latino voters.

Harris vs. Trump latest presidential poll: Trump has nowhere to go to find voters

By Matt Arco | NJ Advance Media for NJ.com

A larger majority of younger voters support Vice President Kamala Harris over former President Donald Trump, according to a new poll.

The Emerson College Poll shows 65% of likely voters under 30 years old back Harris, compared to 56% who supported President Joe Biden when he was still in the race. The poll also shows likely voters over 70 years old also support Harris over Trump, 51% to 48% — last month they broke 50% to 48% for Trump.

The poll shows Harris leading Trump nationally 50%-46%.

Per the poll: “Since last month, Trump’s support decreased two points among likely voters, from 48% to 46%, while Harris surpassed Biden’s 47% by three percentage points, at 50%. When third-party candidates are on the ballot, Trump’s support decreased by one point, from 45% to 44% since last month, while Harris outperformed Biden by four points from 44% to 48%.”

GOP pollster on Trump-Harris: 'I haven't seen anything like this'

By Matt Arco | NJ Advance Media for NJ.com

Republican pollster Frank Luntz appears stunned at the current state of the Kamala Harris-Donald Trump matchup and this year’s presidential election.

Luntz, who’s been called “The Nostradamus of pollsters” and conducts focus groups, had been bullish on Trump defeating Joe Biden and returning to the White House. Now, he says, he can’t believe what he’s seeing among his focus groups and in the polls.

“She’s bringing out people who are not interested in voting for either Trump or Biden, so the entire electoral pool has changed and if it continues in this direction you have to start to consider Democrats winning the Senate and Democrats winning the House,” Luntz said Wednesday on CNBC.

“She’s got intensity now. She’s got an intensity advantage. She’s got a demographic advantage and I haven’t seen anything like this happen in 30 days in my lifetime,” he said. “Now my groups are broken up by young women saying, ‘I’m not voting for him anymore.’”

Greek wildfire spreads to edge of Athens; towns, hospitals evacuated

Source: Reuters

PENTELI, Greece/ATHENS, Aug 12 (Reuters) - A fast-moving wildfire fuelled by searing summer heat and strong winds spread to the edge of Athens on Monday, torching trees, houses and cars and forcing the evacuations of more than 25 towns and villages, Greek authorities said.

Almost 700 firefighters backed by volunteers, 190 fire engines and 33 waterbombing aircraft battled the conflagration that broke out at 3 p.m. (midday GMT) on Sunday near Varnavas 35 km (20 miles) north of the capital.

By Monday the fire, the worst in Greece this year, had advanced to the fringes of Athens' densely populated northern suburbs around the heavily wooded Mount Penteli, sending columns of smoke into the air across the horizon.

There were so far no reports of deaths. Thirteen people were treated by rescuers and medical staff for smoke inhalation and two firefighters for burns, fire brigade spokesperson Vassilis Vathrakogiannis said.

Scientists propose warming up Mars by using heat-trapping 'glitter'

NBC
Aug. 9, 2024, 11:09 AM EDT / Source: Reuters

The idea of transforming Mars into a world more hospitable to human habitation is a regular feature of science fiction. But could this be done in real life?

Scientists are now proposing a new approach to warm up Earth’s planetary neighbor by pumping engineered particles — similar in size to commercially available glitter and made of iron or aluminum — into the atmosphere as aerosols to trap escaping heat and scatter sunlight toward the Martian surface. The idea would be to augment the natural greenhouse effect on Mars to raise its surface temperature by roughly 50 degrees Fahrenheit (28 degrees Celsius) over a span of a decade.

This alone would not make Mars habitable for people, but the scientists who developed the proposal see it as a potentially doable initial step.

“Terraforming refers to modifying a planet’s environment to make it more Earth-like. For Mars, warming the planet is a necessary, but insufficient, first step. Previous concepts have focused on releasing greenhouse gases, but these require large amounts of resources that are scarce on Mars,” said University of Chicago planetary scientist Edwin Kite, who helped lead the study published this week in the journal Science Advances.

FDA approves first nasal spray for anaphylaxis

Source: NBC

Aug. 9, 2024, 12:37 PM EDT / Source: Reuters

The Food and Drug Administration has approved ARS Pharmaceuticals’ nasal spray as the first needle-free emergency treatment for potentially fatal allergic reactions, the agency said on Friday.

The spray, which will be sold under the brand name Neffy, is seen as an alternative to EpiPen and other autoinjectors like Kaleo’s Auvi-Q that are filled with epinephrine, a life-saving drug used by people at risk of anaphylaxis and other allergic reactions.

Anaphylaxis is a severe, life-threatening allergic reaction that typically involves multiple parts of the body and is considered a medical emergency.

Neffy, a single-dose nasal spray administered into one nostril, was approved for use in adult and pediatric patients who weigh at least 66 pounds.

Russia declares an emergency in Kursk, under attack by Ukraine. 12 killed in Russian strike on mall

Source: AP

KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — Russia declared a “federal-level” emergency in the Kursk region following a large-scale incursion from Ukraine and sent reinforcements there on Friday, four days after hundreds of Ukrainian troops poured across the border in what appeared to be Kyiv’s biggest attack on Russian soil since the war began.

Meanwhile, a Russian plane-launched missile slammed into a Ukrainian shopping mall in the middle of the day, killing at least 12 people and wounding 44 others, authorities said.

The mall in Kostiantynivka, in the eastern Donetsk region, is located in the town’s residential area. Thick black smoke rose above it after the strike.

“This is another targeted attack on a crowded place, another act of terror by the Russians,” Donetsk regional head Vadym Filashkin said in a Telegram post.

Battles rage in Russia as the Kremlin struggles to repel surprise Ukraine incursion

Source: NBC

A convoy of burnt-out military trucks, some bearing the "Z" symbol of the Kremlin’s war and appearing to contain bodies, sits along the side of a highway.

The video, circulating on social media Friday and geolocated by NBC News, doesn’t show a beleaguered section of the front lines in eastern Ukraine. It is a village in Kursk, across the border in southern Russia.

For days now Vladimir Putin’s forces have struggled to put down an incursion into Russian territory by Ukrainian troops, after a surprise attack that threatened to upend the war’s status quo and open a new front in a daring challenge to the Kremlin.

The unprecedented assault entered its fourth day Friday with battles still raging and Moscow rushing reinforcements and bombing its own territory to try to contain the Ukrainian advance.

Samsung recalls over 1 million electric ranges due to fire hazard

Source: NBC

Samsung has issued a recall for over 1 million slide-in electric ranges due to fire hazard after the company received reports that its front knobs could be unintentionally activated by people or pets, and resulted in 250 blazes.

The recall, announced in a release by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission on Thursday, covers 30 models sold in the U.S. from May 2013 through August 2024, ranging in price from $1,250 and $3,050.

Since 2013, Samsung received over 300 reports of the "unintentional activation" of the range's front-mounted knobs by humans or pets.

Of the 250 fires the issue caused, at least 18 caused "extensive property damage," the release said.

Right-Wing Activists Are Challenging Tens Of Thousands Of Voter Registrations

By Matt Shuham

HuffPost

In his 34 years working in elections, Wesley Wilcox had never experienced what happened to him just a couple of weeks ago. A woman who said she was involved with the conspiracy theory group True the Vote came to his office with a list of names about 2,500 entries long, spanning about 800 printed pages.

She was challenging thousands of her neighbors’ eligibility to vote, and was urging Wilcox, the supervisor of elections in Marion County, Florida, to investigate them, and potentially, remove them from voter rolls altogether.

“This is by far the largest set of ‘challenges’ that have ever been delivered to this office,” Wilcox told HuffPost. “Exponentially so.”

And Wilcox isn’t alone. Since Donald Trump lost the 2020 election and falsely blamed widespread voter fraud, right-wing activists have sought to “clean” the election system by deleting tens of thousands of their neighbors from voter rolls.
