We need more science!

I love panzanella.

I made it for dinner tonight, using tomatoes from our garden and heirlooms from the farmers market. The ripe tomatoes get cut up in bite-sized pieces and placed in a colander over a salad bowl. They're sprinkled with kosher salt and pressed down with a large spoon so the juices drip down into the bowl. Every now and then I added a bit of salt, stirred them, and pressed them again.

I picked basil outside and rolled the leaves together and cut them into thin strips. Can't remember the fancy word for that. Minced up a small clove of garlic, and added the garlic and basil to the bowl of tomato juices, along with olive oil and white wine vinegar.

Meanwhile my daughter ripped sourdough bread into bite-sized pieces and drizzled them with olive oil. We toasted them for 10 minutes at 350 degrees.

Once the bread pieces are cool, they get mixed with the tomato juices and tomato pieces. The bread soaks up the juices and turns pink, and it's all heavenly.

We had the panzanella with a little provolone cheese on the side, and oven-roasted corn from the farmers market, topped with Trader Joe's chili-lime seasoning.

This is my absolute favorite summer dinner.

-- Trump wants to destroy Obamacare, Medicare and Medicaid in order to create a new phony healthcare system with the goal of injecting microchips into all Americans.

-- The American education system is being ruined in order to make room for a new curriculum of Russian language instruction.

How to Fight Fascism From a Position of Strength

The growth of white supremacy and fascism has been noticeable in a number of countries lately, prompting the question: What can we learn from each other? Each country might find “best practices” elsewhere that could be applied at home, in addition to learning from its own past successes.

Americans might be especially drawn to the Swiss example because what has been working for that country addresses not only our current immigration crisis but also the need among progressive U.S. movements to re-learn how to go on the offensive.

According to Flavia Kleiner, a young leader in the movement Operation Libero, the right wing grew steadily for two decades in Switzerland using the issue of immigration. The right-wingers cleverly introduced a series of modest anti-immigrant initiatives — each of which contained some common-sense logic — and used their successes to become the largest political force in Switzerland.

My impression is that the Swiss right-wing’s strategy was like the movement against reproductive choice in the United States — a series of steps designed to chip away at a woman’s right to choose. Switzerland’s established parties reacted to this offensive in the way the Democrats do in the United States: by going on the defensive and trying to hold on to previously-won gains. In both countries, the largest parties operate contrary to the folk wisdom that “the best defense is a good offense.”

Tension between pro-police rally goers and Black Lives Matter protesters in Gilbert, Arizona, has evolved into fistfights, The Arizona Republic reports. Now, another rally is planned for this Thursday.

“Videos posted to social media and shared with The Arizona Republic show pro-police protesters waved flags and yelled about the threat of ‘antifa,’ referencing a loosely organized antifascist ideology that has no clear organization or membership but is often criticized by President Donald Trump,” AZCentral reports. “Several people were also caught on video threatening and punching counterprotesters gathered across the street with little police intervention. Some were heard making homophobic and racist remarks and Nazi salutes during and following the brawl.”

According to counter-protesters, police were favoring the pro-cop demonstrators, who they say largely instigated the violence.

“They’re propagating this antifa boogeyman,” said BLM protester Emily Hansen. “It’s terrifying.”
