Science wins. COVID-19 deaths/hospitalizations could soon be rare... no vaccine required.

Oct 1 (Reuters) - An antiviral pill developed by U.S. drugmaker Merck & Co (MRK.N) could half the chances of dying or being hospitalized for those most at risk of contracting severe COVID-19, with experts hailing it as a potential breakthrough in how the virus is treated.

If it gets authorization, molnupiravir, which is designed to introduce errors into the genetic code of the virus, would be the first oral antiviral medication for COVID-19.

Merck and partner Ridgeback Biotherapeutics said they plan to seek U.S. emergency use authorization for the pill as soon as possible and to make regulatory applications worldwide.

"An oral antiviral that can impact hospitalization risk to such a degree would be game changing," said Amesh Adalja, senior scholar at the Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security.

Note: read the article. The clinical studies are so successful they've been requested to stop the trials and go straight to approval under emergency use.

Basically... it's Tamiflu for C19.

How to reconcile the "quite legal" J6 Rally and the "quite illegal" J6 Riot?

I see MANY people conflating the rally and the riot, as if the planning for the rally was planning for the riot.

The rally was permitted... gatherings near the Capitol were also granted permits.

What evidence is there of an organized conspiracy to attack the Capitol building, other than a couple 3%'ers or PB's texting each other?

On second thought, I don't think Laundrie resides in a gator's belly.

A former co-worker of Brian Laundrie has said the missing 23-year-old is “well-versed” in surviving in the wild.

The revelation comes as Mr Laundrie, identified as a person of interest in the death of Gabby Petito, has been missing for more than a week.

Investigators have struggled to find any trace of him during six intensive days of searching in the 25,000-acre, swampy Florida reserve where it is believed to have gone. A team of divers joined police and FBI agents using boats and helicopters in the search for him on Thursday.

An unnamed source who used to work with Mr Laundrie told the New York Post that he had once boasted to colleagues he was able to survive on next-to-nothing for weeks on end when camping in the wild.

I think this guy has watched "US Marshalls" movie a few too many times... he's on the run!

Where's Tommy Lee Jones??

Come on in. Proof positive that the Tax system is broken. Hint: Elon Musk.

I'll just hit you up with the facts:

In 2018, Elon Musk received a salary of $56,830

In 2019, Elon Musk received a salary of $23,760

In 2020, Elon Musk received a salary of $0

And he's never received a dime from Tesla. He takes the "salary" in stock.

Wow... these people are so brilliant (sarcasm) that they can get around the "oh so well written" tax laws.

Musk, who is worth around $200 Billion paid... between 2014 and 2017...

3.3% in taxes.

To summarize... next time a politician brags about jacking up the marginal rate on people who are paid a salary... by like 3%... slap them (figuratively)

I agree with the UK Wealth Tax Commission, a one time larger Wealth Tax and annual Wealth Tax payments. And YES (Mark Cuban hates this one) tax them on the value of their stock portfolio on a random date of the year.

About the 1500 missing Native Americans we've been hearing about lately.

Far too often, we see only half the story when there's a clickbait headline to make...

Oh wait, did I say "half" a story? More like a fraction of the real story.

IN this case... whaddya know? The Federal Gov't is already working on it!

WASHINGTON – Today Secretary of the Interior Deb Haaland announced the formation of a new Missing & Murdered Unit (MMU) within the Bureau of Indian Affairs Office of Justice Services (BIA-OJS) to provide leadership and direction for cross-departmental and interagency work involving missing and murdered American Indians and Alaska Natives. The MMU will help put the full weight of the federal government into investigating these cases and marshal law enforcement resources across federal agencies and throughout Indian country.

A task force on Missing and Murdered American Indians and Alaska Natives — Operation Lady Justice (OLJ) — was formed in 2019 to pursue these unresolved cases. Today’s announcement builds on that work by designating new leadership and support positions, including a Unit Chief responsible for stakeholder collaboration, continued policy development, and overall performance of the unit. The Department is also designating new positions with existing federal funding to support the investigative needs of the MMU, including the collection and analysis of performance data and coordination of services with the families of victims.

A question about potentially abusive men...

Why is it that the wrong bumper sticker can get one fired, a bad word on Facebook can leave you friendless, a statue can draw the ire of an entire town, the wrong neighborhood can leave you without access to friends from the "other side of the tracks"...

But women (men too) FREQUENTLY find themselves in abusive and potentially abusive relationships with class A Assholes with both families knowing about the issues and it's met with acceptance or at least apathy.

Why no real social condemnation of abusers?

Biden approval +1 to 50% and crushing TFG's numbers...

According to ARG...

Biden''s gone from 59% earlier this year to 50%, slightly better than 49% last month.

But the highlights are in the other survey questions.

Biden's crushing Trump in EVERY category... COVID-19, Economy, Domestic, International, Right Direction/Wrong Direction...

$5 Trillion in spending is nuts, fiscally irresponsible... and this may be the perfect time to do it

Normally... in a typical year in the United States, in a typical year in the world the very thought of blowing through $5T in new spending would be considered irresponsible and downright stupid by most thinking people...

But this isn't a typical time... you see, because of COVID-19 most countries on the planet have spent tons of money. You see... usually you don't blow up your budget because it will risk harming the value of the dollar and the reputation and good standing of the American economy.

But in COVID-19 days... I expect we're going to see the printers running 24/7 in MANY countries and for US to run our printers at double speed, I don't see much risk. In other words, COVID-19 may be the PERFECT TIME to spend a buttload of cash.

1) We're looking at a possible/probable recession in 2022. Spending will counter that...

2) No downside in international economic consequences

3) Inflation needs to be tempered with increased incomes, increased hours at work and overtime.

4) Further Gov't intervention may be necessary.

Now we wait on D.C....

I do have one suggestion, though... fund the spending at least partially through a EU-Style VAT tax... call it a 20 year COVID tax. EU style meaning there are exemptions, of course...

Just wanted to get my "DU Copyright" for a Kristi Noem nickname

Might come in handy in 3 years...

Friday News Dump...WSJ reporting US Military confirms details of drone attack last month

10 Afghan civilians killed, including 7 children and the target escaped.

Unfortunately, Milley called it a "righteous strike" last month.
