Women Against Matt Gaetz' group explodes with 1,300 members in first two days

“Women have had enough of him and had enough of his mouth speaking derogatory to women who are simply expressing their rights," group founder Samantha Hope Herring said, according to WEAR-TV.

Herring told the station that the group had grown by 1,300 people in its first two days.

"By speaking up, we can organize together to vote him out. That's the number one thing we want to see happen. And we also are going to be asking Congress to censure Matt Gaetz," she explained.

DOJ: Buffett company discriminated against Black homebuyers

NEW YORK (AP) — A Pennsylvania mortgage company owned by billionaire businessman Warren Buffett’s company discriminated against potential Black and Latino homebuyers in Philadelphia, New Jersey and Delaware, the Department of Justice said Wednesday, in what is being called the second-largest redlining settlement in history.

Trident Mortgage Co., a division of Berkshire Hathaway’s HomeServices of America, deliberately avoided writing mortgages in minority-majority neighborhoods in West Philadelphia like Malcolm X Park; Camden, New Jersey; and in Wilmington, Delaware, the Justice Department and the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau said in their settlement with Trident.

The practice effectively cut off entire communities from the primary pathway for wealth generation in the U.S.: homeownership. To this day, Black and Latino households are far less likely to own their home compared to their white counterparts.

The alleged redlining activity happened between 2015 and 2019 — Trident stopped writing mortgages in 2020. Along with avoiding making mortgages in minority neighborhoods, the Trident employees made racist comments about making loans to Black homebuyers, calling certain neighborhoods “ghettos.” One manager of Trident was photographed posing in front of the Confederate Flag. The marketing materials used by Trident involved exclusively white individuals, and nearly all of the company’s staff were white.

Disney co-owned Hulu bans ads on Climate, Abortion, & Guns undercutting Democrats' 2022 themes

Hulu blocks ads on abortion, guns, and climate change — and Dems aren’t happy

By Makena Kelly Jul 25, 2022

Abortion rights, gun control, and climate change have taken center stage for Democrats running in this year’s midterm elections. But the popular streaming service Hulu has repeatedly rejected Democratic ads focusing on these central campaign issues over the last few weeks, as first reported by The Washington Post on Monday.

On July 15th, a group of Democratic campaign organizations attempted to purchase a joint ad on abortion and gun control on the Disney-backed Hulu platform along with other digital buys on Facebook, YouTube, and Roku and more traditional placements on broadcast and cable channels. The ad ran on every other platform, but Hulu rejected it. Hulu hasn’t told the groups if it will run the ad, a Democratic party official told The Verge.

In a joint statement on Hulu’s rejection on Monday, the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, and Democratic Governors Association said, “Hulu’s censorship of the truth is outrageous, offensive, and another step down a dangerous path for our country.”

Disney owns 66% of Hulu. Corporate media is actively helping to destroy our democratic institutions.

'Full of injustice': Burden of court fines vary by race, county in WA

'Full of injustice': Burden of court fines vary by race, county in WA

Black, Indigenous and Latino people in Washington have disproportionately higher court fines and fees, a recent study found, making it harder for some to rebuild after prison.

by Wilson Criscione

Nathaniel Sanders still remembers what he said when the judge ordered him to pay $65,000 in restitution and other court fees decades ago.

“I made a joke, ‘Do you know what the interest is going to be on this? When I get released, you might as well give me a gun, a pager and a bag of drugs so I can pay this off,’” Sanders recalls.

This story is part of a series called Justice by Geography from InvestigateWest. The independent news nonprofit is dedicated to investigative journalism in the Pacific Northwest. Visit invw.org/newsletters to sign up for weekly updates.

“How do you pay off a quarter-million debt when you’re unemployed and trying to do everything else — pay probation costs, find a place to live in Seattle, pay insurance and the cost of daily life?” Sanders said. “Imagine all that on top of a quarter-million debt. It’s inconceivable.”

Legal financial obligations, or LFOs, can burden people with suffocating debt long after they’ve done their time in prison. Yet the way court fines and fees are imposed in Washington can depend both on who you are and where the crime occurred. Black, Indigenous and Latino people are given more LFOs at higher rates than Asian or White people, a 2021 Seattle University School of Law study found. Meanwhile, counties and judges vary widely in how they assess and collect legal financial obligations, according to a recent report by the Washington State Supreme Court Minority and Justice Commission. Rural counties may rely more on these fines and fees to subsidize their budget, and some courts may see them as necessary punishment for those convicted of crimes.

And many counties add an additional fee just for collecting the court debt in the first place. Clerks said that without the fee, they would have to ease up on their efforts to collect these debts.

“I’m not sure if we could continue our program if we lose the fee entirely,” one clerk reported.
