US officers and enlisted personnel are taught they must refuse illegal orders and to intervene when they see others violating the laws of war, and the case of CWO Hugh Thompson and his crew is the gold standard.

Trump may or may not "crack" (some would argue he already has), but his power to order military action unilaterally is far from absolute.
