for these dress-up occasions. As Ann Landers used to say, "If you are able to hold up a strapless gown, you are old enough to wear one." There are all kinds of special bras for these gowns. I'm certain her parents are okay with the dress.
I don't much like seeing the style in wedding gowns, though, for church weddings. They make special bridal boleros for the gowns, though, so they can be removed for a dance reception.

In my observation, "ladies" is used a lot, but "gentlemen" is used for certain occasions.
