Most people are not going to stay home and limit themselves to the "bare necessities" for two years or longer. It's just not going to happen. The point of the shutdown was to give the hospitals time to catch up, not to prevent any person from ever getting the coronavirus. People who are older or more vulnerable should stay home for as long as they need, but most people are not waiting two years or more to see friends and family, go to the movies, get other medical care that they need, or get their hair cut. It just ain't happening. And there is no need to do so, except for the most vulnerable - once enough people get the virus, the chances of getting it from each person you come into contact with go down significantly. Vaccine or not, this will eventually be more like the flu in that not everyone gets it at once because some people have already had it. The reason it's so much more dangerous than the flu right now is because nobody has had it before, so we're all very vulnerable.

We may need some rolling slowdowns for a while until we either get a vaccine or get closer to herd immunity, but the idea that things will stay this shut down for two years is ridiculous.
