reasons why R's went after Hillary early on. Bill mentioned one of them at the 2016 convention, namely that Hillary is smart and competent. They wanted to discredit her as soon as possible because they realized that she had her own political ambitions.

The other reason why I think they had such a strong personal hatred of Hillary is that she was one of the attorneys on the team that investigated Nixon in preparation for drawing up articles of impeachment. Searching for something to impeach Bill on and tarnish Hillary with was the R's political payback.
