(73,524 posts)as Barry Freed along the Hudson River. He won a environmental award, and was on stage with Senator Moynigan at one point. As "Barry," Abbie became friends with Tommy "the Rabbi" Trantino, who was in Rahway State Prison, and an associate of Rubin "Hurricane" Carter's. I was also friends with Tommy, as well as having a close friendship with Rubin.
In fact, while looking through a box of old photos, etc, yesterday, I found copies of memos they produced when Rubin became the head of the inmates' council. Tommy served as #2. But within a short time, in response to the work they were doing -- and the positive results, which included the advantage of having some of "Barry's" old connections -- the prison removed the pair late one night. Tommy would soon end up in Trenton, while Rubin had a stay at the Vroom Nuilding (for the criminally insane). One sees a section of that removal towards the beginning of the movie featuring Denzel Washington as Rubin. The legal team sued, and the judge found what they did to Rubin to be illegal. He got damages, that paid for a private investigator. (This, of course, led to the finding of the Caruso file, something small I played a role in.)
I have never heard the story about Mexico. Abbie turned himself in from his upstate New York home, after extended communications between his lawyer and the law.
