27. BUT! What happened to the Dog?

Mr. Merritt was walking his dog, he was then shot at, chased and beaten in the head by Mr. Levine. Where was the doggy all this time? Was he injured? Did he run away? Is he alright? I have checked several accounts of this incident, but no mention of the dog.
