This, Putin has said, is unacceptable--the Russians are united, unitary, and must not be divided.

"Unity" is the name of his political party. It's a deeply ethnocentric view, with the weirdness that there is no Ukrainian (it's a variety of Russian, a substandard one) or Belorusian--and to be "Russian" is a cultural trait, based on language and cultural allegiance.
