(6,514 posts)or any kind of purloined docs, in his basement--and he did--then, he has to be charged. Failure to give them back when the FBI tried to arrange it the first time also looks bad. I don't know how discretional Garland can be in this scenario. If we are a nation of laws, and Garland has gone on TV and stated that no one is above the law, then it's coming. There is no excuse for Trump to have done this. He just got caught.
And, now he's looking for the ID of the agents who caught him. Chilling, but there appears to be no excuse. And, sure he will fight; he has the right to appeal the verdict and say what he wants. But, he has made admissions on having the documents, so he's kinda effed right now.
And, although I understand why many posters have said that it makes no difference whether the papers are classified or not, which technically it doesn't, there is still a differential in terms of excuses and punishments for having taken classified docs pertaining to gawd knows what. Under the Espionage Act, one of the punishments is execution.
And, no, I don't think it would come to that. But, what if he ended up on Death Row? He needs to sober up and listen to those attorneys that he thinks he's smarter than. Their client is going to jail, and the only questions are for how long and where. If I were him, I'd be packing up the boat right now.
