(9,958 posts)Especially now, with climate warming causing hurricanes to be more dangerous and damaging. I absolutely believe in using taxpayer money to help the people who suffer stoma like Ian.
What concerns me, though, are the millions of people who do not have insurance either because it is too expensive or they simply cant get it for areas prone to flooding. Why should taxpayers fund their rebuilding in the same places that will need to be rebuilt in a few years from the next storm?
Here in Austin, we have an area around Onion Creek that frequently floods and destroys homes. The government helped people rebuild in exactly the same spots until finally someone said enough. The government bought several of these properties, and now no homes stand there. That seems a better use of taxpayer money than just paying to rebuild in the same spots over and over.
