Why just fearmonger about Josh Shapiro's Jewish identity? [View all]
...are we doing Catholics next?
Or Baptists?
What the hell makes it okay to single out Josh Shapiro's Jewish faith as some disqualifier for VP?
The concerns go something like this:
I would like to see Josh. But I am a little worried with his being Jewish. Doesnt affect me. I dont think it affects him. But I worry about the rest of the country if that would hurt the ticket. I hope not.
Israelis and Palestinians didn't just fall out with each other yesterday, so using the current Gaza conflict as a reason to oppose him as VP doesn't pass the smell test.
It would make more sense if there was some significant difference between his positions on Israel from the Biden administration or VP Harris, but that doesn't appear to be the case.
So what is this all about? Right now there's a bit of a lean in the direction of appeasing demagogic political attacks by retreating from them.
The argument being made is that those racist and demonizing elements in America are too powerful and too risky to stand up to 'right now,' and avoiding the risk in this election of alienating someone who feels the same is more important than defending someone against them.
Where does this bending to demagogues and opportunists end? If Shapiro doesn't advance, it'll surely be someone else's religious faith or belief under attack next. Or, some other invented nonsense which is intended to divide us from our candidates in this election.
Can people actually hear themselves with this shit? When did it become okay to bend to demagogues?
Are the people we're relying on to defend against racist and misogynistic attacks on our nominee for president really not prepared to also support Josh Shapiro's Jewish identity?
Is it just Judaism that's hard to stand up for, or are these folks just as squishy about others religious identities?
