Christian Pfahl survived the Nazi genocide and later became a victim of racist attacks. Here's what he has to say to the public and, above all, to young people. They defended themselves in vain: mothers with small children, elderly and sick people… On the night between August 2nd and 3rd, 1944, they were crammed into the gas chambers of the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp, writes DW.

On that single night, the SS killed 4,300 people—an appalling episode of the Porajmos, the genocide of the Sinti and Roma in Europe. Nazi Germany killed about 500,000 members of Europe's largest minority—in camps and ghettos.

These people were killed by gas, shot, starved, died in forced labor, or were used as guinea pigs in medical experiments.

European Day of Remembrance
In 2015, the European Union declared August 2nd the European Day of Remembrance for the Holocaust of the Sinti and Roma.
