Walz Military Service Talking Points [View all]

Governor Walz enlisted in the Army National Guard when he turned 17 and served for 24 years, rising to the rank of Command Sergeant Major.

After attending college thanks to the GI Bill, Tim Walz served his community as a high school teacher and football coach – taking his team to the state championship for the first time in the school’s history.

The son of an Army veteran who served as a command sergeant major, Walz was the ranking member on the House Veterans Affairs Committee.

The Governor has been a tireless advocate for veterans in Congress and as governor of Minnesota

In Congress, he voted to increase funding for the military and increased mental health resources for veterans

He introduced The Clay Hunt Suicide Prevention For American Veterans Act to provide more support for veterans suffering from PTSD, which unanimously passed both the House and Senate with bipartisan support and was signed into law by President Obama.
