In reply to the discussion: Why is no one talking about Israel attacking the UN peacekeeping force in Lebanon. [View all]NickB79
(20,148 posts)The UN is there to enforce the 2006 ceasefire agreement, the last time Israel and Hezbollah fought an outright war.
Both Israel and Hezbollah were to withdraw 20 miles from the border, with the UN providing troops to enforce said withdrawal.
Israel abided by the ceasefire for almost 20 years.
Hezbollah spent that time building tunnels and weapons depots in the so-called demilitarized zone, which they've used for the past year to lob missiles into Israel at civilian targets.
And now, the IDF has said enough is enough, they'll go in and do the job that the UN was supposed to do, themselves. What's the UN do? They literally stand in the way while they watch Hezbollah operate in restricted space in real time.
As for the Hezbollah fighters that killed that Irish UN peacekeeper? They were released on bond in 2023 and are yet to face justice.

It's clear to anyone that there's a GLARING double standard when it comes to Hezbollah and Israel when you're in the halls of the UN.
