2. Both Kerry and Obama said it was not misspeaking - a State Department official

walked it back originally because it was not policy. Kerry - as soon as asked - said that it was not misspeaking.

Not to mention, you are making too much of the one year. What they are referring to is that Syria - unstable as it was - having CW is dangerous. No one has said that there were serious discussions to get rid of them. What was said was that Obama and Putin -- and Kerry and Lavrov were speaking of them since Obama was in St Petersburg - which was AFTER SSyria used the gas and AFTER the threat of an attack.

Not to mention - it was the MEDIA that called it the slip of the tongue.

Consider the question - what answer could be given?

-" nothing" is obviously a lie considering today - and it would be 180 degrees from Kerry's constant since childhood preference for diplomacy.

- "Assad steps down" - not our goal of the attack and a major faux pas.

- refusing to answer or avoiding the question - just stupid. The answer was a no brainer - and the rhetorical part was that at that point they were pessimistic that it would happen.

At any rate - keeping negotiations close to the vest is not lying -- and often needed.
