8. The house I grew up in had an attic.

We did use it, but nobody went up there regularly. It could happen since they swarm and it could have taken a relatively short time to reach that number.

There was also an attic in my maternal Grandmama's house. It was built in the 1930s. NOBODY went up there unless it was an extreme emergency. We were told that there was no telling what critters or other things were in it.

The only time I ever heard of somebody going up there was in the 1990s when a fire had started on the roof and they wanted to make sure it wasn't smoldering in the attic. We never ever attempted to break that rule. Attics held much more terror than other spaces in our minds.

The house was also raised on short brick columns. We were warned not to go too far under the house because of snakes. That was a proven threat because they were seen every now and then slithering out. However, when we wanted to escape the adults, that's exactly where we went because they wouldn't follow us. They'd stand at the edge and holler at us.
