Mississippi is one of most dependent on federal dollars. We've got entire agencies within state government that are federally funded. The Mississippi Department of Employment Security was days away from shutting down in October. Schools are heavily funded from federal sources - in some districts, 100% of the school lunch program is paid by the feds. A surprising percentage of teaching staff are funded by grants.

We have a number of military bases (including a Navy base 160 mi inland - thank you, Trent Lott!). Stennis Space Center (NASA) is on the coast. The National Guard is a huge employer. And it's not just weekend warriors, there seem to be quite a few who are full-time with the Guard.

The effort to force the U.S. government into default was utterly stupid. Especially for a state that runs on federal money.
