I spent two years being tested for every other malady under the sun. After they couldn't find any tumors or growths, they did an MRI of my brain, thinking a brain tumor there was firing off signals that caused me to believe I was in pain.
No brain tumor either.
It ended up being a wheat allergy. But between my first and last bit of testing, I am sure I brought the people at Big Medicine around 12 to 20 thousands of dollars. Luckily the Big Insurer got the bill for the tests, but still my question is: how come of the two doctors I saw, neither ever said, "Might be dietary related?"
In the end it was someone on the nursing staff that figured it all out.
Way back in the 1980's, SF Chronicle ran an article about a Stanford student who was hospitalized. In intense pain. He spent 37 days in a hospital bed before someone figured out he had appendicitis.
Modern test machinery missed that fact, but his symptoms were so clear that one of his parents' friends, a retired MD had said early on, "Son, you have appendicitis."
