My son has been submitting college applications and we'd recently joked about needing to do weekly Skype sessions from his dorm, since they were so close.
I picked him up from swim practice and gave him the news that she was struggling, it was the longest and quietest 20 minute car ride ever.
He commented that everything seems strange and sad as he was accustomed to feeding her and now there's an emotional void in the pet food routine.

Poor kitty. We lost our 11-year-old Siamese, Bob, very suddenly in 2013 (possible heart attack).
