Transgender is a person whose gender doesn't conform with the one they were assigned at birth. Being gay, means that one is sexually attracted to members of the same gender as they are.

A transgender person can be gay, polysexual, asexual, or they could be straight. Another way of looking at it is the expression "Sexuality is about the gender one wants to go to bed with, while gender identity is about what gender one wants to go to bed as."

Is there a difference between cross-dressing and being transgender?

Yes.

Cross dressing is simply dressing up as what society perceives to be the opposite gender from one's assigned sex. Transgender is having a gender identity at odds with the one society assigned them at birth.

Crossdressing on it's own doesn't not necessarily make one transgender. A person could be crossdressing as part of a joke, or celebration or to fool someone for some reason. If these are the only reasons one is crossdressing and their perceived gender is the same as their assigned one...that person is not transgender.

However, if one crossdresses to express a part of their gender that is at odds with the one they were assigned then that person is transgender.

Is being transgender a mental disorder?

No.
