she would have retired during Obama's first term, and made it possible for him to appoint a young replacement.

But she refused, saying he wouldn't be able to find anyone better than she was -- which wasn't the point. She had already had cancer twice by then, including a very serious pancreatic cancer. We would have been better off if she'd retired when she could have been replaced by Obama.

But she thought she was essential. And now look where we are. Instead of having her, we got Amy Coney Barrett.
